HOKA running shoes split by drop (the height difference between heel and front): 5 mm, 7 mm and 8 mm. Top picks: Clifton 11 for daily runs, Bondi 9 for cushioning, Arahi 9 for stability, Rocket X 3 for racing, Speedgoat 7 for trail. The 8 road shoes range 98 g in weight, from 213 g to 311 g.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
Your first pair should be the Clifton 11. HOKA calls it a “core model,” and its drop is 8 mm. Switching from another brand, the heel height feels much the same. The Bondi and Mach are second pairs to add when, using the Clifton as your baseline, you want something “softer” or “lighter.”
Key points
- For daily road runs, the Clifton 11 (283 g). The Bondi 9 is 14 g heavier with a 3 mm lower drop
- The Mach X 3 is 51 g heavier than the Mach 7, the weight of the plate
- On trail, it comes down to the Speedgoat 7 (5 mm lugs) or the Challenger 8 (4 mm lugs)
Stop at “all HOKAs are max-cushion” and you miss the differences
HOKA shoes differ not in looks but in drop and weight. For your daily pair, use the Clifton 11 with its 8 mm drop as the baseline.
They all have thick soles and upturned toes, but line up the spec sections on the official Japan site and they are quite different inside. Weights differ by up to 98 g (311 − 213), and prices by more than double (38,500 ÷ 17,600 = 2.19).
In this article, I line up the current models listed on HOKA's official Japan site on Oct 13, 2026, narrowed to 8 road and 4 trail shoes. I chose them by 2 criteria.
| Criteria | Reason |
|---|---|
| ① Listed in the official Japan men's (or unisex) lineup on the day I checked | No older models mixed in |
| ② Its role doesn't overlap with another shoe | Avoids “they're all the same” |
This is not a popularity ranking. Top picks by role are chosen from shoes that meet these two criteria, by weight, drop and price.
HOKA's 8 road shoes at a glance
| Model | Weight | Drop | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clifton 11 | 283g | 8mm | JPY 19,800 |
| Bondi 9 | 297g | 5mm | JPY 24,200 |
| Mach 7 | 237g | 5mm | JPY 17,600 |
| Mach X 3 | 288g | 5mm | JPY 25,300 |
| Skyward X 2 | 311g | 5mm | JPY 27,500 |
| Arahi 9 | 284g | 8mm | JPY 19,800 |
| Rocket X 3 | 227g | 7mm | JPY 30,800 |
| Cielo X1 3.0 | 213g | 7mm | JPY 38,500 |
The Bondi 9 got 2 mm thicker than before, while the Skyward X 2 got 2 mm thinner.
Meta-Rocker turns the sole into a rocking-chair base
Set a HOKA on a flat floor and the toe and heel lift off. The sole curves like the bottom of a boat, and HOKA calls this shape Meta-Rocker.
The aim is to smooth the weight shift from landing to toe-off. On the Cielo X1 3.0 race shoe, HOKA also claims it helps minimize braking.
A thick sole is hard to bend, which makes it hard to flex at the base of the toes and push off. So the sole is rounded from the start, and instead of bending, it rolls. Max cushion and Meta-Rocker work as a set.
There is one more difference in naming. The Bondi 9 has a “smooth Meta-Rocker,” while the Mach X 3 and Tecton X 4 have a “speed-focused Meta-Rocker.” Same name, but the curve changes for slow and fast shoes. When trying them on, stand and lean forward, and compare where each shoe tips forward to feel the difference.
The models split into three groups by drop
Drop is heel stack minus front stack. For the Clifton 11, 42 − 34 = 8 mm. The bigger the number, the higher the heel.
| Drop | Road | Trail |
|---|---|---|
| 8mm | Clifton 11, Arahi 9 | Challenger 8, Mafate 5 |
| 7mm | Rocket X 3, Cielo X1 3.0 | — |
| 5mm | Bondi 9, Mach 7, Mach X 3, Skyward X 2 | Speedgoat 7, Tecton X 4 |
What's interesting is that the entry-level shoes cluster in the 8 mm group. The Challenger 8 raised its drop from before, and the Rincon 5 also went from 5 mm to 8 mm.
8 mm is a common number at other brands too. The 5 PUMA models I compared on this site were all 8 mm. It looks like HOKA is moving the shoes easiest for switchers from other brands toward 8 mm first. That trend is why I put the Clifton 11 as the first pair.
How to choose a HOKA: top picks by role
| Role | Top pick | Key numbers | Rakuten price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily training | Clifton 11 | 283 g, 8 mm drop | JPY 17,325–22,000 |
| Cushioning | Bondi 9 | The “soft” end of the official scale | JPY 18,989–24,984 |
| Stability | Arahi 9 | 1 g off the Clifton, same price | JPY 17,800–27,500 |
| Racing | Rocket X 3 | 227 g, carbon plate | JPY 27,720–65,540 |
| Trail | Speedgoat 7 | 275 g, 5 mm lugs | JPY 19,360–27,500 |
Daily training: Clifton 11
Why it's the top pick: HOKA calls it “the core model that embodies HOKA cushioning,” for both running and walking. The thick 42 mm heel softens landings, and the 8 mm drop feels familiar if you switch from another brand. It is the baseline for measuring other HOKAs: “so many grams heavier, so many mm lower than the Clifton.”
Watch out for: 283 g is not on the light side among the 8 shoes. It is 46 g heavier than the Mach 7 (283 − 237). As a shoe for fast days, it plays a different role.
What the upper fabric and insole changed to is covered in depth in my Clifton 11 review.
HOKA Clifton
Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 17,325 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 22,000 depending on the shop. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Super Sports XEBIOSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanCushioning: Bondi 9
Why it's the top pick: the official page has a cushioning scale with three steps: “responsive / balanced / soft.” The Bondi 9 sits at the “soft” end. Its sole is 2 mm thicker than before, with new foam. It comes in three widths: regular, wide and extra wide.
Watch out for: the drop is 5 mm, 3 mm lower than the Clifton. At 297 g, it is the heaviest of the shoes without a plate. It is a shoe for slow, long runs.
HOKA Bondi
Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 18,989 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 24,984 depending on the shop. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanStability: Arahi 9
Why it's the top pick: it sits at the “stable” end of the official stability scale. A frame called H-Frame limits the inward roll of the foot on landing (overpronation). Yet it weighs 284 g, just 1 g more than the Clifton 11 (284 − 283), at the same price.
Shoes with added support are usually heavier, so a 1 g difference stands out. On the numbers, there's no reason to skip it on the belief that stability shoes are heavy.
Watch out: If your heel doesn't roll inward on landing, this support adds nothing for you. In that case the Clifton is enough.
HOKA Arahi
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 17,800 (as of 10/13). Some shops ask up to JPY 27,500. Prices change daily. The surest way to try shoes is in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the shop's return and exchange terms before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanRace: Rocket X 3
Why it's the top pick: HOKA has two carbon-plated race shoes: the Rocket X 3 and the Cielo X1 3.0. The Cielo is lighter by 14 g (227 − 213). The price gap is JPY 7,700 (38,500 − 30,800). That works out to JPY 550 per gram saved (7,700 ÷ 14).
HOKA says the Rocket X 3 has a 'high-grip rubber outsole' that 'adapts to changing road conditions.' Japanese races can be rainy, so I pick the shoe whose rubber is built for grip first.
Watch out: Its official use is 'race' only. If you want one pair that also handles daily training, this isn't it. The Cielo X1 3.0 is billed as 'HOKA's lightest super shoe ever' and is World Athletics approved. If you're chasing a time and nothing else, that's your shoe.
HOKA Rocket X
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 27,720 (as of 10/13). Some shops ask up to JPY 65,540. Prices change daily. The surest way to try shoes is in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the shop's return and exchange terms before you buy.

Clifton 11 vs Bondi 9
The weight gap is 14 g (297 − 283) and the price gap is JPY 4,400 (24,200 − 19,800). On paper the 2 shoes look close, but the drop differs: 8 mm vs 5 mm.
- First HOKA, or switching from another brand → Clifton 11
- You own a Clifton and want something softer for easy days → Bondi 9
- Wide feet that need an extra-wide fit → Bondi 9
- You want this one pair to cover faster days too → skip the Bondi
The Clifton also has an upgraded version, the Clifton PRO (296 g, JPY 22,000). Stack height and drop are the same, 42/34 mm and 8 mm, but the foam is different. Its official use is 'performance running': the Clifton shape, tuned for faster days. I covered the foam and rocker differences in my Clifton PRO review.
Mach 7 vs Mach X 3
The names differ by one letter, but they're different shoes. The Mach 7 has no plate and weighs 237 g. The Mach X 3 sandwiches a Pebax plate between two foam layers and weighs 288 g. That's 51 g heavier (288 − 237).
In return, the idea behind the Mach X 3 is energy return from the plate and foam. Their official uses differ too: 'running' for the Mach 7, 'road racing' for the Mach X 3.
- A light shoe for faster training, at a lower price → Mach 7 (cheapest of the eight)
- You want to get used to a plated shoe and race in it too → Mach X 3
- Buying it because 'the upgraded Mach must be lighter' → skip the Mach X 3
HOKA Mach
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 13,900 (as of 10/13). Some shops ask up to JPY 17,600. Prices change daily. The surest way to try shoes is in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the shop's return and exchange terms before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanThe Skyward X 2 is an odd one: a plated shoe for daily running. At 311 g it's the heaviest of the eight, and HOKA calls it 'the plated shoe best suited to daily training.' It's listed as sold only on the official site, brand stores and in-store HOKA SHOPs, so it's hard to find on Rakuten.
The four trail shoes
Scroll the table sideways →
| Model | Weight | Drop | Lug depth | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speedgoat 7 | 275g | 5mm | 5mm | JPY 23,100 |
| Challenger 8 | 287g | 8mm | 4mm | JPY 19,800 |
| Mafate 5 | 332g | 8mm | 5mm | JPY 27,500 |
| Tecton X 4 | 272g | 5mm | 4mm | JPY 38,500 |
Trail top pick: Speedgoat 7
Why it's the top pick: 5 mm lugs and Vibram Megagrip rubber. Yet at 275 g it's only 3 g heavier than the plated Tecton X 4 race shoe (275 − 272). The price gap is JPY 15,400 (38,500 − 23,100). Of the four, it's the cheapest way to get both grip and low weight, the two things you want in a mountain shoe.
Version 7 adds a way to attach gaiters at the hem. It's a fix for having to stop when gravel gets in.
Watch out: The drop is 5 mm. If you run roads in the Clifton (8 mm), your heel sits 3 mm lower. In races with long paved stretches, the deep lugs are more than you need.
HOKA Speedgoat
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 19,360 (as of 10/13).
Shopping JapanSpeedgoat 7 vs Challenger 8
The Challenger 8's tagline is 'Road certified. Trail tested.' Its official uses are both 'trail' and 'running.' It's for runs where you leave home on pavement, head into the hills and come back on pavement.
By the numbers, its lugs are 4 mm, 1 mm shallower, and its 8 mm drop matches the road Clifton. It's 12 g heavier (287 − 275) and JPY 3,300 cheaper (23,100 − 19,800).
- Racing on mountain trails with rocks, roots and mud → Speedgoat 7
- Mostly forest roads and gravel, with some pavement → Challenger 8
- You run roads in the Clifton and want the same feel in the hills → Challenger 8
- Races with steep descents after rain → skip the Challenger
HOKA Challenger
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 16,990 (as of 10/13). Some shops ask up to JPY 42,230. Prices change daily. The surest way to try shoes is in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the shop's return and exchange terms before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanThe Mafate 5 weighs 332 g, 57 g more than the Speedgoat 7 (332 − 275). HOKA says it's built with 'durability first, to go the distance.' It's for runners in 100 km-plus races who put foot protection ahead of low weight, and too heavy for a first trail shoe.
Mandatory gear for each race is in my trail mandatory gear article.
Who HOKA suits
- Runners who want a thick sole to soften landings. The Clifton 11's 42 mm heel is the baseline.
- Runners who like the feel of a sole that rolls forward. The Meta-Rocker rolls you forward instead of flexing for push-off.
- Runners switching from another brand's 8 mm drop shoe. The Clifton 11 or Arahi 9 keeps a similar heel height feel.
If you prefer a flat sole, you can stand in the shop, lean forward and check how it rolls before you choose. For racing, get a Clifton or Mach for training first, then add a race shoe, and each pair has its own job.
Comparing with other brands
Other brands have the same max-cushion / plated / no-plate lineup. I've put On's 18 models in my On shoes article and PUMA's 5 models in my Deviate NITRO article, in the same table format. PUMA even gives an estimate of how many km each shoe lasts.
FAQ
How are the HOKA Clifton and Bondi different?
Drop and amount of cushioning. The Bondi 9 is 14 g heavier than the Clifton 11 (297 − 283) with a 5 mm drop. The Clifton 11 is 8 mm. I go into the daily shoe in detail in my Clifton 11 review.
Which HOKA shoes are for stability and for daily training?
In the official Japan men's road lineup on the day I checked, the stability role goes to the Arahi 9 and daily training to the Clifton 11. The Arahi 9 is 284 g, 8 mm drop, JPY 19,800.
How is the Clifton 10 different from the 11?
The upper fabric and insole changed; the sole is the same as before. The men's road lineup on the day I checked listed the 11; the 10 is the previous generation. If you see the 10 in a shop, just compare how the upper feels.
What is the cheapest HOKA running shoe?
Among HOKA road shoes, the Rincon 5 at JPY 16,500 (276 g, 8 mm drop). Among the 8 shoes in the table, the Mach 7 at JPY 17,600. The Rincon 5 swapped the previous two-layer sole for a single layer and added more outsole rubber. It is 7 g lighter than the Clifton (283 − 276) and JPY 3,300 cheaper (19,800 − 16,500), an entry-level shoe.
Does HOKA make waterproof (GTX) running shoes?
Yes. The Clifton 11, Speedgoat 7 and Challenger 8 have versions with GTX in the name listed on the official Japan site. Their weights and prices differ from the standard versions, so the numbers in this article's tables don't apply.
