Choose a trail vest's capacity by how much mandatory gear your race requires, not how far you run. The top pick is the 8–12 L Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 8 (8 L, 213 g), with two flasks included. Up to 5 L, it's the ACTIVE SKIN 4 (4 L, 195 g); around 15 L, it's mont-bell's Cross Runner Pack 15 (15 L, 291 g).
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
Torn between two sizes? Buy the bigger one. A vest's shoulders and chest are the same across sizes; more capacity just means a longer bag on your back. By the official numbers, Salomon's 4 L and 8 L differ by only 18 g, and mont-bell's 7 L and 15 L by only 15 g. Buying again because your mandatory gear won't fit costs far more.
Key points
- Two flasks are officially included only with Salomon's ACTIVE SKIN and Osprey's Duro. For mont-bell, The North Face and Paagoworks, buy them separately
- Weight per liter is 88.7 g for a 3 L vest and 19.4 g for a 15 L pack. The smaller, the heavier for what it holds
- Paagoworks' RUSH shows all colors sold out on the official store (Oct 13, 2026)
Pick vest capacity by distance? '5 L for 60 km' rarely works
A trail vest's capacity is set by mandatory gear more than distance. Salomon's official page describes the 5 L ADV SKIN 5 as for 'long trail runs up to about 60 km.' The 12 L ADV SKIN 12 is for '60 km and up.'
Apply that guide straight to Japanese races and your gear won't fit. Mt.FUJI 100's KAI70k is 67.9 km, but the mandatory list has 19 items. You carry rain jacket and pants, an insulating layer, a survival blanket, two lights and spare batteries (my article comparing four races' mandatory gear).
Pack capacity is set not by how far you run but by how much gear the organizer requires. This article lines up 12 models on that basis.
How I chose: the criteria
I only included models whose official Japan page lists all three: capacity, weight and price. I ranked them on the four criteria below, not by what sells best in shops.
| Criteria | Reason |
|---|---|
| ① Low weight per liter | For the same load, a lighter bag is better |
| ② Flasks included | Many races require 1 L of water. Buying flasks separately adds cost |
| ③ Low price per liter | Easier on the wallet over time |
| ④ The brand says what it's for | You can tell what distance it's built for |
I split capacity into three groups: up to 5 L, 6–12 L, and 14 L and up.

| Paagoworks RUSH 15R | About 15 L | About 350 g | JPY 28,600 |
Salomon's two ACTIVE SKIN models and Osprey's Duro 6 come with '500 ml × 2' flasks. Salomon's two ADV SKIN models say 'with flasks' in the product name and take 500 ml. Paagoworks' RUSH 15R has none.
Working out weight and price per liter
You can't compare different capacities directly, so I divided weight and price by capacity.
| Model | Capacity | Weight per liter | Price per liter |
|---|---|---|---|
| mont-bell Vest Pack 3 | 3L | 88.7g | JPY 3,767 |
| Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 4 | 4L | 48.8g | JPY 3,300 |
| Salomon ADV SKIN 5 | 5L | 40.6g | JPY 3,520 |
| Osprey Duro 6 | 6L | 38.3g | JPY 3,483 |
| mont-bell Cross Runner Pack 7 | 7L | 39.4g | JPY 1,729 |
| Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 8 | 8L | 26.6g | JPY 1,788 |
| The North Face TR 10 | 9L | 33.9g | JPY 2,774 |
| Salomon ADV SKIN 12 | 12L | 20.6g | JPY 1,650 |
| The North Face TR Rocket | 14L | 26.8g | JPY 1,964 |
| mont-bell Cross Runner Pack 15 | 15L | 19.4g | JPY 913 |
| Salomon CROSS SEASON 15 | 15L | 21.3g | JPY 1,247 |
| Paagoworks RUSH 15R | About 15 L | 23.3g | JPY 1,907 |
Weight per liter is 88.7 g for the 3 L vest and 19.4 g for the 15 L pack, a gap of about 4.6 times (88.7 ÷ 19.4). The smaller the model, the heavier it is for its capacity.
The reason is the build. Most of a vest's weight is the harness from shoulders to chest and the front pockets. Those stay the same whatever the capacity. Only the back bag gets bigger, so more capacity adds little weight.
How many grams one size up adds
Within each series, I subtracted the difference when you go up in capacity.
| Step up | Added capacity | Added weight | Added price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 4 → 8 | +4L | +18g | +JPY 1,100 |
| Salomon ADV SKIN 5 → 12 | +7L | +44g | +JPY 2,200 |
| mont-bell Cross Runner Pack 7 → 15 | +8L | +15g | +JPY 1,600 |
| mont-bell Cross Runner Pack 15 → 20 | +5L | +16g | +JPY 1,300 |
| The North Face TR 6 → TR 10 | +2L | +10g | +JPY 1,870 |
| The North Face TR 10 → TR Rocket | +5L | +70g | +JPY 2,530 |
The ACTIVE SKIN 4 L and 8 L differ by 18 g. In water from a 500 ml flask, that's one sip. The price gap is small too, as the table shows.
That's why, when I'm torn between two sizes, I pick the bigger one. A bigger vest can be cinched down with its cords on light days. Gear that won't fit in a small vest won't fit no matter what.
Up to 5 L: top pick Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 4
This is the capacity for carrying water, a phone and keys on long road runs or half and full marathon training.
Why it's the top pick: At 195 g it's the lightest of the three, and it officially comes with two 500 ml flasks. You can head out with 1 L of water the day you buy it. It also takes a 1.5 L bladder (a water bag that goes in the back).
Salomon describes it as 'for short trail runs.' It also works with a separately sold pole quiver, so it isn't a road-only design.
Watch out: 4 L is about full once you add a rain jacket. If you plan to race trails, go straight to 8 L. The difference is 18 g.
Salomon ACTIVE SKIN
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 13,200 (as of 10/13). Some shops ask up to JPY 15,400. Prices change daily. For apparel, compare the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) with your own measurements. If in doubt, check the shop's return and exchange terms.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping Japanvs ADV SKIN 5: ADV SKIN is Salomon's higher-end line. 203 g for 5 L. It features a Y-shaped structure that spreads the load and a back bag that stretches from 3 to 5 L. It costs 1.33 times the ACTIVE SKIN 4 (price division from the quick table). Pick it if a close, body-hugging fit for racing comes first. For training, the ACTIVE SKIN is enough.
mont-bell Vest Pack 3: The cheapest of the three, but it weighs 266 g. The back bag is 3 L and takes a bladder up to 2 L. It's an option if you want to get fitted for chest size at a mont-bell store.
8–12 L: top pick Salomon ACTIVE SKIN 8
This is the capacity for a rain jacket, lights, a blanket and food in trail races up to 50 km. I compare 6–7 L models here too.
Why it's the top pick: 213 g for 8 L. It's the lightest of the four 6–9 L models and comes with two flasks. Its price per liter was about the same as mont-bell's 7 L, which has no flasks (table above). Since you'd otherwise buy flasks separately, this one comes out ahead.
Salomon lists the weight with accessories as 273 g. 273 − 213 = 60 g, so the two flasks weigh 60 g. That's all you carry before adding water.
Watch out: In Salomon's official lineup, it sits in the lower price range. The Y-shaped structure of the higher-end ADV SKIN isn't mentioned in its description. If body-hugging fit for long races comes first, get the ADV SKIN 12.
Who should get the ADV SKIN 12: 247 g for 12 L. At 20.6 g per liter, it's the lightest of the vest-style models. It's built for 60 km and up. If you're thinking about 100 km after 50 km, buying this from the start saves buying again. It's 34 g heavier than the ACTIVE SKIN 8 (247 − 213).

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanOsprey Duro 6: 230 g for 6 L (M), with two 500 ml flasks with wing stays. It takes a 1.5 L bladder, sold separately. It has two zipped compartments on the back and six mesh pockets for food, for runners who like to keep things sorted. Its price per liter is the highest in the 6–12 L group. The women's version is called the Dyna 6.

Both are built on the assumption you carry warm layers, rainwear and an emergency kit. They're 2 L and 10 g apart. There's no reason to agonize, so I pick the TR 10.
'Accessories not included.' Bring your own flasks. A feature of this line is three chest straps, with an adjustable height for the top one.

This is the capacity for 100 km, 100 miles and races with long mandatory gear lists. Mt.FUJI 100 counts the pack itself, big enough to hold all the mandatory gear, as one of its 19 items. You'll be carrying rain jacket, rain pants and an insulating layer, so around 15 L is the base here.
Why it's the top pick: 291 g for 15 L. It's the lightest of the four, and its weight and price per liter were the lowest of all 12 models. Compared with the RUSH 15R, it's 59 g lighter (350 − 291) at 0.48 times the price, less than half.
The fabric is 30-denier nylon, and the shoulder pockets take bottles up to 600 mL. It also takes a 1.5 L bladder (sold separately). There's a pocket to hold pole tips and loops to secure them.
Watch out: No flasks included. Some bottle shapes won't fit the shoulder pockets. Buy the pack first, then try bottles in it at the shop. It has two chest straps.
mont-bell Cross Runner Pack
Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 16,000 (as of 10/13). Prices change daily.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaFor rainy races, the CROSS SEASON 15: Salomon's ADV SKIN with a waterproof compartment added. The back uses fabric with a 3,000 mm waterproof rating and a roll-top closure, so it keeps an insulating layer you don't want wet protected inside. It weighs 320 g, 29 g more than the mont-bell.
For races through the night, the TR Rocket: It's built 'mainly for races that run through the night.' About 375 g for 14 L (M). The roll-top adjusts capacity, and an inner zip lets you reach inside without unrolling it. It's the heaviest of the four, 84 g more than the mont-bell (375 − 291).
RUSH 15R: About 350 g for about 15 L. The shoulder straps adjust steplessly with Velcro, and the sides cinch with six bungee-cord points. It fits a 70–100 cm chest in one size, which sets it apart from the other three. On Oct 13, 2026, the official store showed all three colors sold out. Its smaller siblings, the RUSH 7R (about 6.5 L, about 290 g) and RUSH 11R (about 12 L, about 340 g), showed the same.

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanRecheck capacity against your mandatory gear
Here I look at the four races' rules from my mandatory gear article from the pack's side.
- 1 L of water or more (Mt.FUJI 100, Izu Trail Journey): two 500 ml flasks get you there exactly. With a model that includes two flasks, there's nothing extra to buy.
- 2 L or more recommended (Hasetsune CUP): two flasks are only half. Choose a model that takes a bladder. The ACTIVE SKIN 8 takes a 1.5 L bladder, so you can carry up to 1 + 1.5 = 2.5 L.
- Rain jacket, rain pants and an insulating layer (Mt.FUJI 100, Shinetsu Five Mountains): that's three bulky items more. This is where 8 L stops being enough, so go up to around 15 L.
- Poles: where you can use them varies by race. In sections where you can't, they go on the pack, so check whether it has a way to secure them.
If you pick a model without flasks, get two 500 ml flasks.

None of the 12 models above are built to carry a laptop. If you run to work, get a dedicated backpack. Here I'll mention The North Face One Mile.
Scroll the table sideways →
| Model | Capacity | Weight | Official price | Weight per liter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One Mile 16 | 16L | About 380 g | JPY 15,950 | 23.8g |
| One Mile 22 | 22L | About 470 g | JPY 18,150 | 21.4g |
Both have a sleeve for laptops up to 13 inches. The One Mile 22 has a removable shoe compartment at the bottom. If you keep running shoes and work shoes separate, get the 22; if it's just a change of clothes, the 16 is enough.
The shoulder harness is shaped closer to a vest to cut down on bounce. It brings trail vest design to an everyday backpack.

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanWho is it for?
- It suits: runners who train on routes with no water stops, and runners who race in the mountains.
For road races only, you can run on the course aid stations. If you have a 4–5 L vest for trails around 20 km, check first whether your race's mandatory gear list fits. For HYROX, as my race day checklist article explains, there's nothing to carry on your back.
A weak point too: the weights in this article are measured differently by each brand. Salomon is the vest alone, The North Face and Osprey are size M, and Paagoworks gives 'about' figures. I didn't use gaps of 10–20 g to decide the rankings.
FAQ
What size trail vest do you need?
Decide by your race's mandatory gear. Up to 5 L if you carry water, a phone and keys on road runs; 8–12 L for trail races up to 50 km; around 15 L as a base for long races where you also carry rain jacket, rain pants and an insulating layer. I compare four races' mandatory gear lists in my trail mandatory gear article.
What's the difference between a trail vest and a pack?
A vest is sized by chest like clothing, with flasks in the front pockets. Salomon, The North Face TR and Osprey come in sizes such as XS–XL or S–L. mont-bell's Cross Runner Pack is built around back length (43 cm for the 7, 48 cm for the 15), with bottles in the shoulder pockets.
Which trail vests come with flasks?
The ones officially listed with two flasks are Salomon's ACTIVE SKIN 4 and 8 and Osprey's Duro 6. Salomon's ADV SKIN 5 and 12 also say 'with flasks' in the product name and take 500 ml flasks. Paagoworks' RUSH has none, so you buy flasks separately.
Are there women's trail vests?
Yes. mont-bell makes Women's versions of the Cross Runner Pack 7, 15 and 20; the 15 is 284 g (291 g unisex). Salomon lists a women's ACTIVE SKIN 4 in its official lineup. Osprey's women's Duro is the Dyna. The North Face TR comes in unisex S, M and L.
How big a pack do you need for a 100-mile race?
Around 15 L is the base. The TR Rocket (14 L) is the one whose official description names overnight races. Salomon positions 12 L for 60 km and up. For races with long mandatory gear lists, start from about 15 L to fit rain jacket, rain pants and an insulating layer, then check against your race's list.
