The Torrentflyer Jacket is mont-bell rain gear whose model changed in spring 2026. The deciding points are the fully stretch fabric and 233g, 20,000mm or more water resistance, 50,000g breathability. It is 47g heavier than the previous model and gained 2 waist pockets and a zipper-adjusted hood. The 3 conditions for mountain race mandatory gear are met by the product page text alone.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The new Torrentflyer has changed from rain gear you keep packed to rain gear you move in while wearing. The waterproof membrane and the 15-denier outer thread are the same as the previous model, and the added 47g goes to the stretch fabric, pockets and hood zipper. It is a model that spent weight not on stopping water but on comfort during the hours worn. So for a long trail through the night I choose this, and I leave the Versalite for short races.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Previous model 186g → 233g. A 47g gap, up 25.3%. Packed size 0.8L → 0.9L
  • Finished chest for M is 114cm → 110cm. 4cm slimmer thanks to the stretch fabric
  • With the same-fabric pants, top and bottom are 398g and JPY 41,500. Usable for a race that requires both

Torrentflyer Jacket weight and water resistance? The official numbers

The 2026 Torrentflyer Jacket is a buy for people who move while wearing rain gear on a long trail through the night. The deciding points are 233g, 20,000mm or more water resistance, 50,000g breathability, and a fully stretch fabric.

It is 47g heavier than the previous model. mont-bell's official site listed a new product number (1128782) as of May 15, 2026, and calls it the "latest model" in the feature dated Jul 10.

mont-bell's official listing of Oct 13, 2026. The women's (#1128783) is 209g and JPY 24,500 on the feature page.

Water resistance is the height of a column of water the fabric can withstand without letting it through. 20,000mm is 20m. Breathability is the weight of water vapor that passes through 1 square meter of fabric in 24 hours; 50,000g is about 2,083g per hour (50,000 ÷ 24). It is a guide to how much sweat vapor can escape.

Torrentflyer vs the previous model | where the 47g went

The previous model (#1128741) remains on the official factory outlet. I line up the two product pages side by side.

Both from mont-bell's official product pages and size charts. The percentage is 47 ÷ 186 = 25.3%. The 2026 model is a fully stretch fabric.

The name of the water-stopping membrane, the thickness of the outer thread, water resistance and breathability. The 4 rows that decide rain gear performance have not changed by a single character. The added 47g, in other words, was not spent on resistance to rain.

A stretch fabric lets the garment be made slimmer

The new model is a fully stretch fabric billed as "no sense of tightness when worn, following movement smoothly." Look at the size chart here. M's finished chest went from 114cm to 110cm, 4cm slimmer. Length 72cm and sleeve 87cm are the same.

Rain gear in non-stretch fabric holds room for swinging your arms in advance through the amount of cloth. If the fabric itself stretches, that room can be cut. With the slimmer cut, there is less cloth flapping in the wind as you run. The meaning of a stretch fabric lies not just in comfort but in being able to change the shape of the garment itself.

The pocket moved from chest to waist

The previous model had 1 on the left chest. The new model has 2 at the waist, and the feature page writes "positions less likely to interfere with a backpack's harness and tape." It moved to a spot where you can put a hand in with the pack on, and the number increased.

The hood, from cord to zipper

Adjustment around the face changed from a drawcord to a zipper at the collar (called the "zip adjust system"). It claims "quick and easy adjustment." The 3 adjustment points remain: a cord at the back of the head for depth, Velcro for the brim height.

Versalite and Storm Cruiser compared (sibling models)

mont-bell's rain gear for runners is 3 pieces of the same membrane, lined up by outer thread thickness. The numbers are the official ones I read in the article on 12 outer layers.

Scroll the table sideways →

ModelWeightOuter yarnOfficial priceWho should pick which
Versalite Jacket143g7 denierJPY 24,000Up to 50km. Time not wearing it is longer
Torrentflyer Jacket233g15 denierJPY 25,500Distances through the night. Time moving while wearing it is long
Storm Cruiser Jacket254g30 denierJPY 22,000Mainly walking mountaineering, running a few times a year
All 3 are 20,000mm or more water resistance. Breathability is 50,000g for the Versalite and Torrentflyer and 40,000g for the Storm Cruiser. Pockets: none on the Versalite, 2 on the other two. Prices are the official listing of Oct 13, 2026 (tax included).

The gap from the Versalite is 90g (233 − 143). For a JPY 1,500 difference, the outer thread is about twice as thick, you get 2 pockets, and the fabric stretches. It is only 21g different from the Storm Cruiser (254 − 233), and the Torrentflyer is JPY 3,500 higher. What that JPY 3,500 buys is the stretch fabric and the 10,000g difference in breathability.

Among the 3, those who should not choose the Torrentflyer are people who leave it at the bottom of the pack and almost never take it out. For that use, the Versalite, 90g lighter and 7 x 7 x 11cm packed, is enough.

What I like

That you can state every mandatory-gear condition from the product page text alone. This is the strongest point. Waterproof breathable fabric, seam tape, hood. All 3 are written on the official page, and water resistance is twice the 10,000mm the Izu race recommends (20,000 ÷ 10,000). If asked at check-in, you can answer by showing the screen.

That it gets 50,000g breathability in a 15-denier fabric. The Storm Cruiser has 30-denier thread in exchange for 40,000g. The Torrentflyer takes both a thickness that resists abrasion and the amount of vapor released.

Running 500km a month, you cannot get your distance in by avoiding rainy days. So I read rain gear numbers first for "is it built to move in while worn," before "weight to carry." This time's changes, the stretch fabric, slimmer chest and waist pockets, are all for the hours spent wearing it.

The pricing is considerate too. About JPY 109 per gram (25,500 ÷ 233). The 143g Versalite is about JPY 168 (24,000 ÷ 143), so the Torrentflyer is about 35% cheaper (1 − 109 ÷ 168).

Things to watch

It is no longer rain gear to choose for lightness. The previous model's 186g was a 43g gap from the Versalite (186 − 143). The new model is 90g. If you buy with the impression of a Torrentflyer article from a few years ago saying "it's light," it will feel heavy in your hand.

The store classification has changed too. The previous model's page was also placed on the "trail running jacket" shelf. The new model's page is classified as mountaineering rainwear and rain jackets. The feature page writes "high-activity-level activities." Whether it suits running is now a garment you judge yourself from the numbers.

Water repellency needs care. According to the feature page, this model uses no PFAS (organic fluorine compounds) in either fabric or repellent. mont-bell recommends frequent washing and restoring repellency with heat from a dryer or iron.

Does the Torrentflyer pass mandatory gear? Who does it fit?

SceneEnough?Reason (within what official numbers can say)
Winter road trainingEnough, but too muchWhat you want to stop is wind. A single piece of about 56g water-repellent gear does the job
Rainy full marathonEnoughWater resistance is ample. But 113g heavier than about 120g rain gear
Trails up to 50kmEnoughMeets the 3 mandatory-gear conditions. For lightness, the Versalite is 90g lower
100km trailsTop pick15 denier, stretch fabric, 50,000g breathability, waist pockets
As mandatory gear for a racePassesWaterproof breathable, seam tape and hood all present; water resistance is twice Izu's recommendation
About 56g is the mont-bell EX Light Wind Parka and about 120g is The North Face Strike Trail Jacket (L). Both are official numbers I read in the article on 12 outer layers. Mandatory-gear conditions differ by race, so the entry guide of your race is the final answer.
  • Entering trails that run through the night. Moving for many hours in rain gear
  • Want to put a hand in the pockets while wearing a pack
  • Want 1 piece whose mandatory-gear conditions you can explain from the product page alone

If lightness comes first, the Versalite, 90g lighter, fits better. If you own the previous model (186g), the resistance to rain is the same, so wearing it out first is still in time.

Mt.FUJI 100 and the Shinetsu Five Mountains both require rain gear top and bottom, as I read in the mandatory gear article. Together with the Dry-Tec Stretch Rain Pants of the same fabric (men's 165g, JPY 16,000), top and bottom come to 398g (233 + 165) and JPY 41,500 (25,500 + 16,000).

Official prices are the listing of Oct 13, 2026 (tax included). The previous model is at outlet prices, and stock depends on color and size. The Rakuten price is the range at stores on the day I checked, and may include the previous model and color variants.

The previous model is out at JPY 7,000 less than the new one (25,500 − 18,500). That is 27.5% (7,000 ÷ 25,500). The numbers that stop rain are the same, and it is 47g lighter. If you are not set on the stretch fabric and waist pockets, it is a sound purchase too.

To tell them apart in a store, look at the pockets. 2 at the waist is the 2026 model; 1 at the left chest is the previous model. The weight listing, 233g or 186g, also separates them. Both are sold under the same product name, so do not choose by name alone.

FAQ

How does the Torrentflyer Jacket fit? Is the same size as the previous model fine?

You can choose the same size, but the chest got 4cm slimmer. On the official size chart, the body measurement guide is the same as the previous model (M is height 165 to 175cm, chest 90 to 95cm). In finished garment dimensions, the length and sleeve are the same and only the chest is 4cm slimmer (M: 114cm → 110cm). The hem stays at 109cm. The new model adds an XXL (height 180 to 190cm, chest 107 to 113cm). If you layer something thick underneath, compare the finished chest number against clothes you own.

Does the Torrentflyer pass as mandatory gear in trail races?

The conditions are met. The product page lists 3 things: waterproof breathable fabric, seam-taped construction and a hood. Water resistance is 20,000mm or more, twice the 10,000mm or more that the Izu race recommends. Wording of conditions differs by race, so lining up the rain gear row of your race's entry guide with this page's specs is enough.

How do the Torrentflyer and Versalite differ? Which should I buy first?

It depends on the length of your race. Up to 50km, when you spend more time not wearing rain gear, the Versalite, 90g lighter. For a distance through the night, where you spend long stretches moving while wearing it, the Torrentflyer, with about twice the outer thread. A comparison of 9 including other makers is in the article on 12 outer layers.
