adidas' Adios Pro 5 and Mizuno's HYPERWARP PURE 2 are thick carbon race shoes released in autumn 2026. Both give a 27.0cm per-shoe weight, so they can be compared directly: about 177g and about 135g, a 42g gap. The stack differs by only 1mm at the heel.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

A 42g gap at the same thickness comes from what the sole is made of. The PURE 2 builds the sole from the light ENERZY XP+ alone and cut it to about 3.55g per mm of heel thickness. The Pro 5 runs the carbon around the perimeter rim and lays grip and durable rubber widely, at about 4.54g. I split it this way: PURE 2 if lightness comes first, Pro 5 if you want the security that includes the outsole rubber.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Weight: Pro 5 about 177g, PURE 2 about 135g (both 27.0cm per shoe). A 42g gap, about 24%
  • Heel 39mm vs 38.0mm, forefoot 35mm vs 35.0mm. Drop 4mm vs 3.0mm
  • PURE 2 went on sale in Japan on Nov 6, 2026. Pro 5 went on sale at home on Sep 22; Japan TBD

Two shoes 42g apart at the same 27.0cm

Race shoe weights are measured at different sizes by each maker, which makes them hard to line up. These 2 both give a 27.0cm per-shoe weight. So subtraction works as is.

The Adios Pro 5 is about 177g and the HYPERWARP PURE 2 about 135g. The stack is nearly the same, yet they are 42g apart. I read where the gap comes from and what it affects in running.

What is inside each shoe is in the Adios Pro 5 review and the HYPERWARP PURE 2 review.

The Adios Pro 5 is from the Sep 22, 2026 announcements by adidas Japan and the home market. The PURE 2 is from Mizuno's Oct 8, 2026 press release. The PURE 2's price is from Mizuno's HYPERWARP feature page (Oct 14, 2026 listing, tax included). The PURE 2's drop is the subtraction of the 2 stacks (38.0 − 35.0).

The forefoot stack is 35mm on both. What differs is 1mm at the heel and what is inside the sole.

The box above covers the PURE 2, which goes on sale in Japan, and the Adios Pro 4 (the Pro 5's previous generation), which you can buy in Japan now.

How do weight and stack differ?

Weight: The gap is 42g (177 − 135). From the Pro 5's side, the PURE 2 is about 24% lighter (42 ÷ 177 = 0.237).

Convert the 42g to a full marathon. At a 1m stride, one foot leaves the ground about 21,098 times. 42g × 21,098 = about 886kg. That is the difference in the total one foot lifts.

Stack and drop: The heel is 1mm different, and so is the drop (39 − 38.0, 4 − 3.0). Both have a low tilt and push off the forefoot.

Weight vs the previous generation−23g (200 − 177)−2g (137 − 135)
I calculated from the table above and the numbers for the Pro 4 (200g, announced Sep 25, 2024) and the original PURE (about 137g).

It differs by about 1g per mm (4.54 − 3.55). The Pro 5 cut 23g from its previous generation to 177g; the PURE 2 kept the original's lightness while stacking 3.5mm more sole. The direction of lightening is the same, but the starting points differ.

Which is better for ease of running, comfort, speed and cushion?

Ease of running: Adios Pro 5. The outsole is a combination of LIGHTTRAXION for grip and Continental rubber for durability. The sense of gripping the road is better on this one, with its widely laid rubber. The PURE 2 also made its sole a flat shape with stability in mind.

Comfort: it splits by preference. The Pro 5 has a light, stretchy LIGHTLOCK 2.0 upper that wraps along the foot. The PURE 2 is a see-through TPEE woven upper that took lightness first.

Speed: PURE 2. It is 42g lighter, and the carbon plate runs 8mm further toward the forefoot than the original. A plate that supports drive at toe-off. Mizuno's recommended audience is runners aiming for under 3 hours in the full.

Cushion: Adios Pro 5. ENERGYRIM runs the carbon around the sole's perimeter rim. It lets you put more LIGHTSTRIKE PRO right under the foot, and claims about 9% more rebound than the previous generation.

Who is it for?

  • Who the Adios Pro 5 suits: People who push off the forefoot and also want road grip and sole durability. People who want a lot of foam right under the foot with a low 4mm-drop tilt.
  • Who the HYPERWARP PURE 2 suits: People with a goal of sub-3 in the full who choose race shoes by lightness. People who found the original PURE's sole thin.

If your goal is in the 3-hour range and you prefer a shoe with a softer plate, there is Mizuno's RACER. The ELITE 2, with a 2-layer sole, which comes out the same day as the PURE 2, is a close rival too. Race-day shoes from each maker are lined up in the carbon thick-sole comparison article.

FAQ

Which is better for a full marathon, the Adios Pro 5 or HYPERWARP PURE 2?

Both are full-marathon race-day shoes. For a sub-3 pace where every gram counts, the PURE 2. If you want to push off the forefoot and also want rubber grip and durability, the Pro 5. adidas' lineup this year is in the adidas 2026 new shoes article.

Do the Adios Pro 5 and HYPERWARP PURE 2 fit the same?

No. The Pro 5 is slightly short in length, with a narrower toe and midfoot. The PURE 2 is for 2E-equivalent (normal) width, with no wide version.

With a 25.0cm foot, I'd go 25.5cm in the Pro 5 and my usual 25.0cm in the PURE 2. Wide feet: in the Pro 5, go up half a size for width room; for the PURE 2, check the width on a sample at a Mizuno directly operated store first. Try on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks.

What are the siblings of the Adios Pro 5 and HYPERWARP PURE 2?

Above the Pro 5 is the 97g Adios Pro Evo 3, which used the same rim-shaped carbon first. The PURE 2's siblings are the ELITE 2 with a 2-layer sole, the RACER for people new to carbon plates, and the 696-pair limited HYPERWARP 96.
