The key to the Max is the upper layer. Helion HF hyperfoam, tuned for more energy return and rebound, sits on the side closer to your foot. The Helion base is the foam tuned for support and stability.

Of On's two shoes at the same JPY 24,200, the Cloudmonster 3 is 35 g lighter (330 − 295) and pushes you forward with a nylon-blend plate. The Cloudrunner 3 Max carries you with side support rather than a plate's push. The two have very different characters.

What I like
Softness and support are split into layers. Helion HF sits closer to the foot, durable Helion on the ground side. You feel cushioning on top, and nothing gives way below. For long daily jogs, it's a sound way to build a shoe. Helion HF is also the foam in On's racing shoe, the Cloudboom Strike 2. Getting the same family of bounce as race day in a daily stability shoe is what sets this shoe apart.
Side-to-side wobble is handled in layers. A heel clip, higher sidewalls and a wide base. From heel to forefoot, the build makes it hard for the foot to drift in or out, and there are 3 features doing it. A gentle forefoot rocker keeps the toe-off smooth.
A wrapped-in feel. A full, round heel and a thick tongue. In a shoe you wear for hours, gentle contact on the top of the foot and heel counts for a lot.
The sizes run large. Men's goes up to 31.5 cm, and you can choose true to size.
Things to watch
At 330 g, it's on the heavy side of On's daily shoes. For tempo runs and fast days, a lighter shoe keeps your legs turning over better.
It isn't a shoe for chasing speed. It's a pair to keep for a defined role: jog, long run and recovery days.
