Of adidas' new 2026 shoes, the one you can buy in Japan and the one I'd pick is the HYPERBOOST EDGE: 45mm heel, 255g, no plate and no rod. The Adios Pro 5 (about 177g) and the Adios Pro Evo 3 (97g) have no price on the official Japan site yet.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
2026 is the year adidas swapped the carbon "rod" for a "rim." The 3 race shoes dropped the rods (ENERGYRODS) that follow the toes and went to ENERGYRIM, which runs around the sole's perimeter. The training shoe goes the other way, with neither plate nor rod. So I read the new shoes by "where the carbon is" before weight.
Key points
- The Adios Pro 5 is 23g lighter than the last generation, with a forefoot 2mm thicker. The official Japan site shows "release in Japan: TBD"
- The Adios Pro Evo 3 costs about $5.2 per gram, about 3.3 times the Adios Pro 5
- The HYPERBOOST EDGE's heel is 45mm, 5mm thicker than the World Athletics road limit
What are adidas' new shoes for 2026? A quick table of 4 models
adidas has 4 new shoes for 2026. The only one you can buy in Japan is the HYPERBOOST EDGE (JPY 24,200), released Mar 17. The Adios Pro 5 went on sale in its home market on Sep 22, and Japan shows "release TBD."
There is 1 condition for inclusion here: that adidas' official announcements confirm a release date between Jan and Oct 2026. 4 shoes qualified.
| Model | Release date (official announcement) | Price | Weight (one shoe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HYPERBOOST EDGE | Mar 17 | JPY 24,200 | 255g (27cm) |
| Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 | Apr 25 (limited numbers) | $500 | 97g (UK 8.5) |
| Agravic Speed Ultra Evo | Aug 25 (3 stores in Chamonix) | $500 | 250g (UK 8.5) |
| Adizero Adios Pro 5 | Sep 22 (Japan TBD) | $275 | About 177g (UK 8.5) |
Drop is the difference between heel and forefoot stack.
HYPERBOOST EDGE | 45mm with no plate and no rod
Of the 4, this is the one whose build changed the most. adidas describes it as "adidas' first plateless super trainer, built for long distances."
What changed from the previous generation: It's a new line with no number in the name, and the announcement doesn't compare it with an earlier model. So I line it up against the Ultraboost 5, which carries the same BOOST name, using official Japan numbers.
| HYPERBOOST EDGE | Ultraboost 5 | EVO SL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | 255g (27cm) | 244g (24cm) | 224g (27cm) |
| Heel / forefoot | 45 / 39mm | 31 / 21mm | 38.5 / 32mm |
| Drop | 6mm | 10mm | 6.5mm |
| Foam name | HYPERBOOST PRO | Light BOOST | LIGHTSTRIKE PRO |
| Official price | JPY 24,200 | JPY 17,710 (sale price shown) | JPY 19,800 |
The heel is 14mm thicker than the Ultraboost 5 (45 − 31). The drop is 4mm smaller, from 10mm to 6mm. The names are close, but these are different shoes.
Difference from its siblings: Compared with Adizero's EVO SL, it is 31g heavier (255 − 224) and the heel is 6.5mm thicker (45 − 38.5). The official price gap is JPY 4,400. Per gram, the Edge is about JPY 95 (24,200 ÷ 255) and the EVO SL about JPY 88 (19,800 ÷ 224), about the same level.
There is also a waterproof sibling, the HYPERBOOST GTX. It is 283g with a 38mm heel and a 32mm forefoot: 28g heavier than the Edge, with a heel 7mm thinner. Same HYPERBOOST name, but a very different stack.
What I like: Building 45mm at 255g. The gap to the EVO SL, whose heel is 6.5mm thinner, is only 31g. adidas says the new HYPERBOOST PRO compound comes from the midsole technology refined in its top race shoes. According to the announcement, in a 60-person study with the University of Cologne, 73% preferred the rebound and 77% preferred the softness over the shoes they wear now.
The other is the outsole rubber. LIGHTTRAXION, a light rubber, covers the sole from heel to toe. The announcement says the idea came from the soles of race shoes.
What to watch: The 45mm heel is 5mm over World Athletics' road limit of 40mm. If you are chasing a record or a placing at a race run under World Athletics rules, read the entry guide first. Where the rule measures is covered in the article on 10 thick-soled carbon shoes.
It suits: runners who want to get through daily training and long distances in one plateless shoe. If lightness comes first, the EVO SL (31g lighter); for race day, the Pro line fits.
For how it compares with earlier generations and which situations suit it, see the HYPERBOOST EDGE review, which digs into this one shoe.

adidas announced it on Apr 23, 2026 as "the first super shoe under 100g." It went on sale on Apr 25 in limited numbers, and the announcement says a wider release will come again in the autumn marathon season.
What changed from the previous generation: The announcement says it is 30% lighter than the Evo 2, with 11% more forefoot rebound and 1.6% better running economy (using less energy to run at the same pace). If 30% lighter gives 97g, the Evo 2 would have been about 139g (97 ÷ 0.7).
The foam is LIGHTSTRIKE PRO EVO, which the announcement says is nearly 50% lighter than before. Supporting it from below is ENERGYRIM: a frame built with carbon runs around the sole's perimeter, and from behind the heel it looks like a mirror.
Difference from its siblings: It is 80g lighter than the Adios Pro 5, which came 5 months later (177 − 97). The heel is the same 39mm, and the forefoot is 1mm thicker at 36mm. The drop is 3mm, the smallest of the 4.
What I like: It comes down to holding a 39mm heel at 97g. They didn't shave the sole to lose weight; they made the foam itself lighter. adidas reports that 2 days after the announcement, in London, an athlete wearing this shoe ran a marathon in under 2 hours.
What to watch: The price is $500, about $5.2 per gram (500 ÷ 97). The Adios Pro 5 is about $1.55 (275 ÷ 177), so this is about 3.3 times as much. On the day I checked, the official Japan site had no product page.
It suits: runners who can spend $500 on a single race. For a race shoe you can buy in Japan right now, there is the Adios Pro 4.

Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 28,600 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 61,808 depending on the shop. Prices change daily.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanHow does the Adios Pro 5 differ from the last generation? | 23g lighter, forefoot 2mm thicker
It was announced on Sep 22, 2026, and the announcement says it went on sale worldwide the same day. Yet the official Japan feature page says "release in Japan: TBD."
What changed from the previous generation: Lined up against the Adios Pro 4 numbers on the official Japan site.
| Adios Pro 5 | Adios Pro 4 | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | About 177g (UK 8.5) | 200g (27cm) | 23g |
| Heel | 39mm | 39mm | 0mm |
| Forefoot | 35mm | 33mm | +2mm |
| Drop | 4mm | 6mm | −2mm |
| Carbon | ENERGYRIM | Carbon rods | — |
| Price | $275 (Japan release TBD) | JPY 28,600 | — |
The announcement says "about 23g, 12% lighter." Adding 23 to 177 gives 200g, which matches the official Japan Pro 4 figure exactly. Working out the share myself gives 11.5% (23 ÷ 200).
The heel stays at 39mm, and only the forefoot is 2mm thicker. As a result, the drop shrinks from 6mm to 4mm. On paper, the slope of the shoe has eased.
The carbon layout changed too. It drops the ENERGYRODS used through the Pro 4 and moves to the same ENERGYRIM as the Evo 3. The announcement says this is a first for the Pro line, and describes a 9% gain in rebound.
Difference from its siblings: It is 80g heavier than the Evo 3 and priced at 55% of it (275 ÷ 500). The announcement positions it as a shoe that applies what was learned from the Evo 3, and for the outsole rubber (LIGHTTRAXION and Continental rubber) it cites grip and durability.
What I like: The 23g. A race shoe getting more than 10% lighter in one generation doesn't happen often. And they didn't shave even 1mm off the heel. The upper also changes to LIGHTLOCK 2.0, with ventilated zones and an inner support band added.
What to watch: With the drop down 2mm, anyone switching from the Pro 4 should choose it as a different shoe that happens to share the name. And the Japan release date and price haven't been decided.
It suits: runners who want a plated shoe lighter than the Pro 4 for long races, and who like a thicker forefoot and a lower drop. If you are used to a 6mm drop and don't want to change, the Pro 4 fits better. Whether to wait for the Japan release or buy the Pro 4 available now is covered in the price and buying section of the Adios Pro 5 review.
Agravic Speed Ultra Evo | road technology goes to the mountains
A new trail shoe. It went on sale in a very small number at 3 stores in Chamonix, timed to the UTMB Mont-Blanc in Aug 2026. The announcement says there will be additional sales at several races within the year.
What changed from the previous generation: The announcement says it is about 5% lighter than the Agravic Speed Ultra 2, with over 10% more rebound and 1% better running economy. The Ultra 2 on the official Japan site is 265g at 27cm. 5% lighter would be about 252g (265 × 0.95), close to the announced 250g.
The carbon is ENERGYRIM here too. The Ultra 2 is listed as "ENERGY RODS" on the official Japan site, so on the trail line too the rods have given way to a rim. The Ultra Evo is described as using 2 of them.
Difference from its siblings: The one with a price on the official Japan site is the Ultra 2: 265g, 43mm heel, 35mm forefoot, 8mm drop.
What I like: It brings road record-chasing technology straight onto the trail. Around the ankle, a collar built into the upper makes it harder for sand and small stones to get in.
What to watch: It costs $500, and where you can buy it is limited to the areas around race venues. The announcement gives neither the stack nor the lug height. For someone who wants to decide by comparing numbers, this shoe lacks the material.
It suits: runners competing for placings in 100km-class races. If you are just starting trail running, the Ultra 2, with its price and numbers all published, is the faster place to start.

To place the new shoes, it helps to know the current Adizero lineup. Here is how the official Japan product pages describe each shoe.
Scroll the table sideways →
| Model | Official Japan description (summary) | Weight (27cm) | Heel / forefoot | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adios Pro 4 | For long-distance races, for runners chasing records | 200g | 39 / 33mm | JPY 28,600 |
| Takumi Sen 11 | For ekiden and short road races | 188g | 33 / 26mm | JPY 24,200 |
| Adios 9 | A thin-soled "Adizero Japan." From training to racing | 176g | 27 / 20mm | JPY 17,600 |
| Boston 13 | An all-rounder for racing and training | 255g | 36 / 30mm | JPY 18,700 |
| EVO SL | A training shoe born from the Evo 1. From jogging to racing | 224g | 38.5 / 32mm | JPY 19,800 |
Lined up, the split follows 2 axes. The first is distance: Adios Pro for long races, Takumi Sen for short ones. The heel differs by 6mm (39 − 33).
The second is whether there are rods. The Boston 13 has fiberglass rods, and the EVO SL doesn't. Even so, the EVO SL is 31g lighter, with a heel 2.5mm thicker. A fuller comparison is in 10 recommended shoes for 2026.
The Adios 9 is a shoe outside the thick-sole trend. Its 27mm heel is 12mm thinner than the Adios Pro 4. The "Adizero Japan" name belongs to this thin-soled line.

The conditions first. It has a price on the official Japan site. Weight, stack and drop are all published. And no older shoe can stand in for it. Those are the 3.
The Evo 3 and the Ultra Evo drop out on the first. The Adios Pro 5 also has no price in Japan yet. What's left is the HYPERBOOST EDGE.
The Edge passes the "no substitute" test as well. No other adidas shoe has a 45mm heel and no plate. It is 6.5mm thicker than the EVO SL and 14mm thicker than the Ultraboost 5. Per gram, the price is only JPY 7 different from the EVO SL (95 − 88).
The answer is the HYPERBOOST EDGE. The 3 record-chasing shoes are for enjoying the announced numbers this year. The money only needs to go on the 1 training shoe that is normally buyable in Japan.
If you already have an EVO SL and the stack doesn't bother you, you have time to wear it out first.
FAQ
When does the Adios Pro 5 come out in Japan?
It isn't decided yet. The official Japan feature page on Oct 13, 2026 shows "release in Japan: TBD." The announcement gives prices of $275 and €275, but no yen price.
How does the Adios Pro 5 fit?
The Japan size chart isn't out yet. In the US there is only one standard width and no wide. Try them on in the evening with your usual socks.
Can I buy the Adios Pro Evo 3 in Japan?
On the day I checked, the official Japan site had no product page. The announcement says it went on sale in limited numbers on Apr 25 and promises another, wider release in the autumn marathon season. No Japan release date has been announced.
Can the HYPERBOOST EDGE be used in races?
In races run under World Athletics rules, the heel exceeds the limit. The official figure is a 45mm heel, 5mm over the 40mm road limit. How it is treated at citizen marathons is written in each race's entry guide.
How do the EVO SL and its variants differ?
The Woven is the same as the EVO SL: 224g, 38.5/32mm. The EXO is 230g and the Zip is 249g, with the same stack. Only the ATR has a different sole: 266.5g, 40/34mm, with 1.5mm lugs and a water-repellent upper.
