I run about 500 km a month, my marathon best is under 2:30, and I picked these seriously. This is my conclusion as of Oct 21, 2026. Shoes with a plate (a thin plate that carries your foot's energy forward) are available for under JPY 30,000. So I lined up seven plated shoes from the lowest official price up. No. 1 is the ASICS MAGIC SPEED 5 at JPY 19,800 and 196g. No. 2 is the Mizuno HYPERWARP RACER at about 200g and JPY 22,000 (on sale Dec 10). No. 3 is the ASICS SONICBLAST 2, with its thick 242g sole.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

For your first plated shoe under JPY 30,000, pick the MAGIC SPEED 5. The reason is that for under JPY 20,000 it has both a carbon plate and FF LEAP, the race-grade foam, at 196g. For half the price of the Nike Alphafly 4 (JPY 39,600), you can try what a plate feels like. It's about 50g lighter than the previous model, and a wide is available. For weight alone, though, the Deviate Nitro Elite 4 at about 170g is better. I choose a first plated shoe on low price, and from the second pair on, on weight.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • All 7 plated pairs have an official price under JPY 30,000. The cheapest is the MAGIC SPEED 5 at JPY 19,800 (196g)
  • The plate material differs by shoe: five are carbon, one nylon and one resin
  • PUMA lists a target distance officially. The Elite 4 is 400km at about JPY 74 per km, and the Nitro 4 is 800km at about JPY 27.5

You can get a plated shoe without spending JPY 40,000

When people say a plated race shoe, the Nike Alphafly 4 (JPY 39,600) and the On Cloudboom Strike 2 (JPY 35,200) come to mind. But in 2026 you can also get plated shoes for under JPY 30,000. Some even cost less than JPY 20,000.

This article lines up seven plated shoes with an official price under JPY 30,000, from the lowest price up. A plate is a thin plate that carries your foot's energy forward. They range from race-day shoes to shoes for faster training.

How I Chose: Best Plated Running Shoes

The order isn't by sales. We ranked them on three criteria.

CriteriaReason
1. It has a plateCarbon, nylon or resin all count. I compared no-plate shoes in a separate article
2. A low official price (under JPY 30,000)I gathered only plated shoes within reach, below race-day shoes near JPY 40,000. At the same price, the lighter one ranks higher
3. A light weight per shoeAmong plated shoes, lighter is easier on your legs over a long distance

No. 1 ASICS MAGIC SPEED 5: A Carbon Shoe for Under JPY 20,000

Why it ranks here: at JPY 19,800 it's the cheapest of the seven, and it has both a carbon plate and FF LEAP, the race-grade foam. It weighs 196g (27.0cm). It's about 50g lighter than the previous model, and the heel stack went from about 43.5mm to about 37.5mm, 6mm thinner. The drop is 7mm.

It's 2/3 of the price of the race-focused METASPEED (JPY 29,700): 19,800 ÷ 29,700 = 0.67. A wide is also available.

What to watch: The insole is fixed and cannot be replaced. It does not suit people who use their own insoles.

ASICS MAGIC SPEED 5

Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 10,500 (as of 10/20). Some shops ask up to JPY 19,800. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.

How the ASICS shoes divide up is in the ASICS 11 shoes article.

No. 2 Mizuno HYPERWARP RACER: A JPY 22,000 Carbon Shoe (On Sale Dec 10)

Why it ranks here: it weighs about 200g and has a full-length carbon plate, for JPY 22,000. It's 40g heavier than the higher ELITE 2 and JPY 7,700 cheaper. The plate is built less stiff than the higher model's. The sole uses two foams: ENERZY XP+ on the inside and ENERZY NXT+ on the outside.

Watch out for: it goes on sale Dec 10, so it won't make a November race. The drop is a low 3mm, and if you're used to a high-heeled shoe the difference in tilt is big. The width is only the 2E-equivalent regular.

Mizuno HYPERWARP RACER (out Dec 10)

Pre-release: available from Dec 10

The HYPERWARP RACER review compares it with the ELITE 2.

No. 3 ASICS SONICBLAST 2: A Resin Plate and a 46mm Stack

Why it ranks here: it has a plate and a thick sole. The heel is 46mm and the forefoot 38mm, with a resin plate called ASTROPLATE. It weighs 242g, 14g lighter than the previous generation (the roughly 14g figure comes from the English announcement). The price is unchanged at JPY 22,000.

Watch out for: if you rotate plated shoes in training, you don't need to step on a plate as stiff as the race-day shoe's every day. If you can do without a plate, the NOVABLAST 6 is JPY 4,400 lower.

ASICS SONICBLAST 2

Lowest price on Rakuten Ichiba: JPY 12,900 (as of 10/20). Some shops ask up to JPY 32,000. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.

The SONICBLAST 2 review also works out weight per millimeter of stack.

No. 4 PUMA Deviate Nitro 4: Lasts 800km, a Training Workhorse

Why it ranks here: it has a plate, yet its target distance is 800km. That's about JPY 27.5 per kilometer (22,000 ÷ 800). 800km is about 19 marathons (800 ÷ 42.195). Where its big brother, the Elite 4, made the plate stiffer, this shoe reworked the plate to be more flexible.

Watch out for: at about 250g it's the heaviest of the seven. The drop went down from 10mm on the previous model to 8mm.

No. 5 New Balance SuperComp Rebel: A Nylon Plate at 222g

Why it ranks here: it swaps in a nylon plate and comes in at 222g. It's a first-generation shoe that went on sale Aug 20, 2026, a training version of the Elite v6. It's only 4g different in weight from the FuelCell Rebel v5 (226 − 222). What you add is a nylon plate and Infinion, and the price goes up JPY 7,040 (23,980 − 16,940).

Watch out for: width is D only, so someone who wore the Rebel v5 in 2E can't pick the same fit. It's a first-generation shoe, so there's no previous generation to compare with.

No. 6 ASICS YOGIRI SPEED: A Carbon Plate Split at the Heel

Why it ranks here: the plate is split in two at the heel to let the stiffness escape. The maximum stack is about 39.5mm, the same figure as the top-athlete METASPEED. It weighs about 227g, about 13g lighter than the previous S4+ YOGIRI. It went on sale Sept 10.

Watch out for: it's 31g heavier and JPY 4,400 more than the MAGIC SPEED 5 (227 − 196, 24,200 − 19,800). Width is standard only, and sizes stop at 22.5–29.0cm.

No. 7 PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite 4: A Carbon Shoe at About 170g

Why it ranks here: it's the lightest of the seven, at about 170g (27cm). It's 24g lighter than the previous Elite 3 (about 194g), at the same price. The stack is a 40mm heel and a 32mm forefoot. PUMA says the plate, now with ribs, transfers force forward more efficiently.

The gap to the Nike Alphafly 4 (JPY 39,600) is JPY 9,900. You can get a plated race shoe for under JPY 30,000.

Watch out for: the target distance is a short 400km, about JPY 74 per kilometer (29,700 ÷ 400). It isn't a shoe to wear every day in training. It shares a name with the HYROX version, so check the product name before you buy.
