The Mizuno HYPERWARP RACER is a strong pick if you're aiming for a 3 to 4 hour marathon and buying your first carbon-plated shoe. It releases Dec 10, 2026, at an official JPY 22,000. About 200g (27.0cm, per shoe), with a 34.0mm forefoot and 37.0mm heel. The full-length plate is built less stiff than the higher models.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

I'd buy the RACER as a carbon shoe that leans toward a plate that isn't too stiff. The gap from the ELITE 2 above is 40g and JPY 7,700, and what makes up that gap is plate stiffness and midsole material. Soft XP+ on the inside, stability-side NXT+ on the outside. Mizuno explains that this layout points force forward, and I read it as a build that makes up for the plate's lower stiffness with how the midsole is arranged.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • 40g heavier and JPY 7,700 cheaper than the ELITE 2 (29,700 − 22,000). The sole is 2mm thinner front and back
  • The midsole is 2 materials: ENERZY XP+ on the inside, ENERZY NXT+ on the outside. A full-length carbon plate, less stiff than the higher model
  • Width is 2E-equivalent (normal), sizes 24.5 to 29.0cm and 30.0cm, 1 color

When you buy your first carbon-plated shoe, what worries you more than the price is whether your legs will hold up. The stiffer the plate, the harder it is to handle until your legs get used to it.

Mizuno's answer is the HYPERWARP RACER. The headline on its official feature page reads "For runners who want to try a carbon plate." Release date, price and the gap from the higher models, lined up first using only official figures.

When does the HYPERWARP RACER come out? Price and official figures

The answer first: it releases Dec 10, 2026, at JPY 22,000. Pre-orders are open at the official online store, and delivery is described as starting in early Dec.

Mizuno describes the RACER as a racing shoe for people aiming at 3 to 4 hours in the full marathon. The sole is mid-thickness within the series, and the drop (the height difference between heel and front) is 3.0mm.

HYPERWARP RACER vs. the last generation: the plate is now carbon

The biggest change is the plate. The Oct 8 release says this kind of model used to get a fiberglass plate. From the RACER on, it's a full-length carbon plate.

MidsoleENERZY XP (whole sole)XP+ (inside) and NXT+ (outside)
Both from Mizuno's press release (27.0cm, per shoe). I call the original PRO the previous generation because it sat at the same about 200g in the original series. The RACER's sole thickness is 34.0 / 37.0mm.

Weight stays at about 200g, with the plate and the sole material swapped. The gap is 0g (200 − 200), so this generation change is about what's inside, not lightness.

From where I stand at 500 km a month, with a plated shoe I look at plate stiffness before weight. What comes back to your legs over a long distance is more the stiffness of the plate than a 10g gap. The RACER is a shoe where Mizuno says it kept that stiffness below the higher model.

How the HYPERWARP RACER differs from the ELITE 2, PURE 2 and PACER

From Mizuno's press release (Oct 8, 2026) and the official feature page (display of Oct 14, tax included).

Versus the ELITE 2: the RACER is 40g heavier and JPY 7,700 cheaper (29,700 − 22,000). The sole is 2mm thinner front and back. Per 1g of difference, that's about JPY 193 (7,700 ÷ 40). Mizuno positions the ELITE 2 for people aiming under 3 hours and the RACER for 3 to 4 hours.

Versus the PACER: the price gap is JPY 3,300 (22,000 − 18,700). For that gap you get a full-length carbon plate and a 1.5mm thicker sole, and it's 5g lighter. The PACER is a plate-free training shoe.

  • Aiming at 3 to 4 hours, your first plated shoe → RACER
  • Aiming under 3 hours and want the stability of a 2-layer sole → ELITE 2
  • A plate-free shoe for training at race speed → PACER

What's good: a build suited to a first plate

It states plate stiffness plainly. The release says stiffness (resistance to bending) was kept below the higher model, and the feature page calls it "a not-too-stiff, easy-to-use carbon plate." It answers head-on what first-timers want to know.

Inside and outside use different midsole materials. Soft XP+ on the inside, stability-side NXT+ on the outside. Mizuno explains that this layout points your running force forward. Even with a softer plate, the idea is to line up the direction of travel on the midsole side.

A full-length carbon plate for JPY 22,000. It's the lowest price among the series' 3 carbon shoes. You can buy it for just over 60% of the PURE 2 (22,000 ÷ 35,200 = about 0.63).

The drop is 3.0mm across the line. All 4 shoes are 3.0mm, so moving between the PACER for training and the RACER for racing doesn't change the heel slope.

Things to watch

  • Weight is 1.25 times the higher model. About 200g is 1.25 times the ELITE 2 (200 ÷ 160). If lightness comes first, it's the ELITE 2.
  • A 3.0mm drop is low. If you're used to high-heeled shoes, the slope difference is big. The daily WAVE RIDER 30 is 8mm, so the gap is 5mm.
  • Width is normal only. It's 2E-equivalent. There's also just 1 color.
  • It releases Dec 10. It won't make a November race. On the day I checked, the pre-order page also showed "out of stock."

Who the HYPERWARP RACER suits

  • A good fit for: runners aiming at a 3 to 4 hour marathon who are choosing their first carbon plate. Runners who don't mind a low drop. Runners with average foot width.

For under 3 hours with lightness first, the ELITE 2 or PURE 2 fits. If you want a high heel or have wide feet, there are other ways to choose. For a plate-free training shoe, the PACER (sub-4, sub-3:30 and sub-3 shoes article).

The official price is from Mizuno's official site on Oct 14, 2026 (tax included). The Rakuten range is what the shops showed on the day I checked. Before release, the product may not be listed. I left the original HYPERWARP (PURE, ELITE, PRO) out of the table.

If you want it on release day, pre-ordering at the official online store comes first. The retailers are described as "some." At shops, tell it apart by the product name "RACER" and the model number J1GM2702.

If you need a plated shoe for a race this year, your choice is the ELITE 2 on Nov 6 or what's left of the original. The original's plate material is different, so check what's inside in the table above before choosing.
