I run about 500 km a month and also race triathlons, and I've narrowed down what a beginner needs. This is my conclusion as of Oct 21, 2026. For your first race (a sprint), the only things you need to own are goggles and a helmet: JPY 17,050 in total. Rent the wetsuit, and race on a bike you own or borrow. I lined up what to add next, and the running total, using official Japan prices.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The only things to buy first are goggles and a helmet. Goggles you fit to your own eyes before you get in the water, and the rules require a hard cycling helmet. The two come to JPY 17,050 (5,500 + 11,550). Rent the wetsuit for JPY 5,800, and race on a bike you already own.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • For race #1, the only things you need to own are goggles (JPY 5,500) and a helmet (JPY 11,550), JPY 17,050 in total
  • A wetsuit rents for JPY 5,800 for 1 week. That's about 9.9 rentals against the JPY 57,200 purchase price (57,200 ÷ 5,800). Rent it 10 times and buying is cheaper
  • The sprint distance is 25.75 km, and the 20 km of cycling is about 78% of it

For your first race, you can enter without buying a bike

Some people hear "triathlon gear is expensive" and give up before they start. But line up the rules and the prices, and the only things you buy yourself for your first race are goggles and a helmet.

This article is for people running their first sprint. It separates what the rules require, what you can rent and what you can add later. The order and the running totals are calculated from official Japan prices.

Sprint distance: cycling is about 78%

CategorySwimBikeRunTotal
Sprint750m20km5km25.75km
Standard1,500m40km10km51.5km
Triathlon Japan Competition Rules (2026 edition), Appendix A. The totals are my calculation (0.75 + 20 + 5 = 25.75, 1.5 + 40 + 10 = 51.5).

Cycling is about 78% of the sprint (20 ÷ 25.75). The standard distance is also about 78% (40 ÷ 51.5). Double the distance and the share doesn't change. That's why the bike gear decides what your race is made of.

What to buy in what order, and the running total

This is the order in which to add things, bit by bit, after your first race. The amounts are running totals of the official Japan prices (tax included).

The total is JPY 22,850 through item 3. Items 4 onward can wait until after you finish. But get your puncture-repair kit before the race, because the rules ban outside help (Article 34).

Wetsuit: where renting stops being the better deal

Zone3 Japan rental prices (as shown Oct 13, 2026) and HUUB JP's price (tax included). If you return it late, it's JPY 2,000 per 1 day.

Rent it 10 times and it costs more than buying (5,800 × 10 = 58,000). If you race once or twice a year, renting is cheaper. And on a day when the water is too warm to wear one, nothing is wasted.

If you buy a bike: start with a road bike

If you're buying a bike, start with a road bike. The Giant Contend 3 is JPY 119,900. Clip-on aero bars (DH bars) can only be used in non-drafting races, so you don't need them at first.

The difference between racing on a bike you own and buying one is JPY 119,900. For race #1, you can enter first and decide on a bike afterward. I covered the details in the bike gear guide.

Race-day flow and what to bring

Triathlon Japan Competition Rules (2026 edition). Headphones and communication devices such as mobile phones can't be used unless the race allows them (Article 47).

You can race in the running shoes you train in now. When you choose a pair, the 6 in the beginner running shoes guide are the place to start.

What to add after your first finish

  • Bike shoes: the Shimano SH-TR501 is JPY 25,960 (247g). It's built so you can put it on with one hand.
  • Bike computer: the Cateye QUICK is JPY 6,380 (24g). Some races with lap courses make one mandatory (Article 95).
  • Tri suit: on days when the water is 22°C or above, you can't wear a wetsuit. In that case, you can wear the same suit from the swim through the run.

Swim gear is in the swim gear guide, and the list of rules is in the distance and rules guide.

Who is it for?

  • Good fit: people who can run and want to try a triathlon. People who want to enter one race first and decide what to add afterward, instead of buying everything up front.

If swimming is new to you, renting the wetsuit and trying the goggles on first means you won't be scrambling on the day.
