The GEL-KAYANO 33 (Kayano 33) is an ASICS stability shoe for runners who want their form held steady in the second half of a marathon. It keeps the Kayano 32's price of JPY 22,000, while the support system and the midsole foam have been swapped. It weighs 298g with about 40mm of stack, and it is the top model of the stability line that has run since 1993.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

I pick the Kayano 33 as a shoe that buys you the late miles, not lightness. The new FLUIDSUPPORT supports the foot continuously from heel strike to toe-off, and ASICS names the moments of fatigue explicitly. The 298g is the sum of that part, the 2-layer sole and the PureGEL in the heel, and it shows how much support is built in.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Same JPY 22,000 as the Kayano 32. Weight and stack versus the previous model aren't given in the official release
  • Compared with the GT-2000 15, another stability shoe: 46g heavier, 2mm thicker, JPY 5,500 more
  • Cushioning rating is Maximum, one step above the GT-2000 15. PureGEL goes in the heel

Can you use the GEL-KAYANO 33 for a full marathon?

Yes. The GEL-KAYANO 33 is the top model in ASICS' stability line, released June 11, 2026 at JPY 22,000. It weighs 298g with a stack of about 40mm and an 8mm drop. ASICS recommends it for "runners aiming to finish a full marathon," so it is a shoe built for the full distance.

For support, it has FLUIDSUPPORT, which names the moments when tired legs lose form. The sole is 2 layers, soft on top and firm below, with PureGEL in the heel. It's a full-marathon shoe for runners who want to keep both support and cushioning for the second half.

It is heavier for that. For lightness and bounce, go to the GEL-KAYANO 33 vs NOVABLAST 6 comparison. The price stayed the same as the Kayano 32 while the insides changed.

Release date, price, width and materials come from the official news release (Jun 4, 2026). The price is the manufacturer's suggested retail price, and the official site's listing on Oct 13, 2026 is the same. Weight, stack and drop are the men's numbers from the Japan official product page that I read for our article on 11 ASICS shoes. The official lineup I read in that same article listed both WIDE and EXTRA WIDE.

Drop is the difference between heel and forefoot thickness. 8mm is the same figure as on the GT-2000 15, the same stability shoe, and on the cushioned NIMBUS 28.

vs the Kayano 32: what changed from the last generation

I put the Kayano 32 release (June 2025) next to the 33 release.

Both come from the official news releases. The 33 colors are my own sum: for men's, standard 4 plus extra wide 2; for women's, standard 3 plus wide 2. The announcement says the 33's forefoot is about 2mm thicker than the 31's.

The price difference is JPY 0 (22,000 − 22,000). The launch model numbers dropped by 2 (6 − 4). The men's wide and women's narrow that Kayano 32 had are missing from the table in the Kayano 33 release.

Two parts swapped, price unchanged. In exchange, the width choices have been narrowed.

Mechanism: from supporting with added parts to supporting through the flow of the stride

The Kayano 32's 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM was a combination of four elements: a heel bevel, a three-dimensional sole shape, a soft foam part at the arch, and a wider contact area. The explanation was that it limits excessive inward roll while you run.

The Kayano 33's FLUIDSUPPORT is worded differently. It supports the whole movement of the foot "continuously," from heel strike to toe-off. Soft material on the inside of the sole keeps the ride light even when you're tired and your form is prone to break down.

The outsole rubber reflects the same idea. Inner rubber is laid out in a curved shape, with an oval pattern on the toe side. This controls how the sole flexes and helps a smooth stride.

For the foam, the upper layer is the soft, springy FF BLAST MAX, and the lower layer is the firmer FF BLAST PLUS. The stack softens impact on the side near your foot and holds its shape on the side near the ground.

So what happens? The Kayano has moved from stopping inward roll with hard parts to building the path from landing to toe-off into the shape of the shoe. That's why I read the 33 as a shoe of a different design from the 32.

vs the GT-2000 15 and NIMBUS 28

The shoes to weigh it against are the GT-2000 15, which plays the same stability role, and the NIMBUS 28, which costs the same.

Weight and stack are the Japan official numbers I read for our article on 11 ASICS shoes. Price, mechanism and materials come from each model's official news release. For the wobble-control system, the Kayano 33 has FLUIDSUPPORT and the GT-2000 15 has the 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM. PureGEL in the heel is in both the Kayano 33 and the NIMBUS 28.

Gap to the GT-2000 15: the Kayano 33 is 46g heavier (298 − 252), 2mm thicker (40 − 38) and JPY 5,500 more (22,000 − 16,500). The price is 1.33 times (22,000 ÷ 16,500).

Put the 46g into marathon steps. At a 1m stride, each foot leaves the ground about 21,098 times, so 46 × 21,098 comes to about 970kg of weight lifted over the race.

What you get for that weight is FLUIDSUPPORT, the 2-layer sole and PureGEL. The official cushioning rating also differs by 1 step: Maximum for the Kayano 33, High for the GT-2000 15.

The recommended audience is worded differently too. The Kayano 33 release says "runners aiming to finish a full marathon." The GT-2000 15 release names people starting to run and people who run regularly.

  • Runners who want support late in a marathon, after fatigue sets in → Kayano 33.
  • Runners up to 10km or the half, or anyone who values lightness → GT-2000 15. I'd skip the Kayano 33 here, because you'd never get to use what the extra 46g and JPY 5,500 buy.
  • Runners who don't worry about inward roll → the NIMBUS 28: same price, 17g lighter (298 − 281), 3.5mm thicker. The details are in my GEL-NIMBUS 28 review.

What I like

It swapped out the heart of the shoe without moving the price. For a stability shoe, the wobble-control system is the heart. ASICS replaced it and the midsole foam, and the suggested retail price is the same as the 32. In the same year, the NIMBUS 28 went up JPY 1,100 and the SUPERBLAST 3 went up JPY 2,200.

It's clear which part of the run it's for. "When fatigue makes form prone to break down": the description names the moment that troubles long-distance runners most. A tool that is clear about who it's for is easy to choose.

It's prepared for wear. The outsole uses HYBRID ASICSGRIP with 2 kinds of rubber, and the heel has AHARPLUS, which ASICS says wears about 3 times more slowly than conventional rubber.

The range of sizes and widths is wide. Men's goes up to 32.0cm, and extra wide has been available since launch, in 2 colors.

Things to watch

  • It's heavy. At 298g, it has the highest figure among ASICS's current road shoes that run heavy.
  • It isn't a continuation of the 32. The mechanism and the sole both changed. If the 32 suited you, it's safer not to treat the 33 as the same shoe.
  • Launch widths were cut. Model numbers went from 6 to 4, and there is no men's wide or women's narrow.
  • The gap from the last model isn't given in numbers. You can't check from official figures how much more stable or how much softer it got.

Who is it for?

It suits: runners aiming to finish a full marathon who know their form falls apart late. Runners who want a softer sole within the stability category. Men who need extra wide.

If you choose by lightness, the GT-2000 15 does the same job at 46g less. If the soles of your Kayano 32 still have life in them, you can wear them out first and still be in time.

Price and where to buy

Official prices are the manufacturer's suggested retail prices (tax included) from the news releases; the 33's listing on the official site on Oct 13, 2026 is the same. The Rakuten range varies by color and size. Price per gram: about JPY 74 for the Kayano 33 (22,000 ÷ 298) and about JPY 65 for the GT-2000 15 (16,500 ÷ 252).

Since the official price is the same, if the 32 is still on sale cheaply, the gap is simply what you pay for the new mechanism. If the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM was enough for you, get the 32; if you want to try the new design for support after you tire, get the 33. On Rakuten, check "33" or "32" in the product name so you don't mix up generations.

FAQ

How does the GEL-KAYANO 33 fit, and what about width?

Men's sizes run 24.5–29.0cm (0.5cm steps) plus 30.0, 31.0 and 32.0cm; women's run 22.5–26.5cm (0.5cm steps). Men's come in standard and extra wide, women's in standard and wide. With a 25.0cm foot, I'd start from my usual 25.0cm, and a man who finds the width tight would take the extra wide. Try them on in the evening with your usual socks.

How does the GEL-KAYANO 33 differ from the 32?

The differences are the support system and the midsole foam. ASICS doesn't state a weight change from the last model, so if lightness is what you want, there is no reason to upgrade. The reasons that do exist are FLUIDSUPPORT, which supports the foot through the whole stride, and the 2-layer sole, soft on top and firm below. Whether you want those 2 things decides it.

GEL-KAYANO 33 or NOVABLAST 6?

Pick the Kayano 33 if your foot rolls inward, and the lighter, bouncier NOVABLAST 6 if it doesn't. The drop is the same 8mm, while the weight differs by 45g and the stack by 1.5mm. For details, see the GEL-KAYANO 33 vs NOVABLAST 6 comparison.

Do I still need the GEL-KAYANO 33 if I already have a GT-2000 15?

Not everyone does. The GT-2000 15 also has the 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM, which limits wobble. The Kayano is for runners who want to step up to more cushioning and PureGEL on marathon race day only. Combinations by target time are laid out in the pace-based shoe guide.
