The Shokz OpenRun Air 2 is a bone conduction earphone for runners who want their ears open. It came out Sep 16, 2026 at JPY 19,880. It weighs 26.4 g and is rated IP67. Battery lasts up to 10 hours, 2 more than the earlier OpenRun.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

If I had to pick one bone conduction model, I'd pick the OpenRun Air 2. It sends sound through the bone, so your ear canals stay open and you can hear cars and footsteps behind you. It is also IP67, so you can rinse it, and the battery runs 10 hours. At 500 km a month, earphones get soaked in sweat for days on end. I look first at whether they wash and how long they last.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • JPY 19,880 and 26.4 g. That is JPY 2,000 more and 0.4 g heavier than the previous OpenRun (JPY 17,880, 26 g)
  • Battery goes from 8 to 10 hours (+2 hours). Five minutes of charging gives 2 hours of listening
  • IP67 means you can rinse it under water. It can't be used for swimming or underwater

How is the OpenRun Air 2 different from the OpenRun?

Battery, charging speed and the build around water resistance changed. The price went up JPY 2,000.

Both sets of figures come from Shokz's official Japan product pages. Charging speed is minutes of listening per minute charged (120 ÷ 5 = 24, 90 ÷ 10 = 9, 24 ÷ 9 ≒ 2.7).

Here is the battery cost per hour. The OpenRun Air 2 is 19,880 ÷ 10 = JPY 1,988, and the OpenRun is 17,880 ÷ 8 = JPY 2,235. Because it plays longer, the Air 2 costs less per hour.

The body is over 9% smaller, and the part that hooks over the ear now follows the curve of the ear. The frame is a nickel-titanium alloy, and there are measures to cut wind noise.

OpenRun Pro 2JPY 27,880IP5512 hoursWant deep bass
OpenFit Air 2JPY 19,880IP558 hoursDislike a band behind the neck
From Shokz's official Japan product page and comparison page (Oct 20, 2026). The OpenFit Air 2 is not bone conduction. It is a true wireless ear-hook model that carries sound through the air.

The OpenRun Pro 2 adds an air-conduction bass driver on top of bone conduction. The price gap is 27,880 − 19,880 = JPY 8,000. Water resistance drops to IP55. See the OpenRun Pro 2 article for details.

The OpenFit Air 2 weighs 7.2 g per ear and plays up to 36 hours with the case. With no band it is lighter, but it is not bone conduction. Our running earphones article covers how to choose.

What I like

First, your ears stay open. Shokz describes it as an open-ear design that lets you hear your surroundings. If you want to catch a bike coming up behind you on the road, that is the biggest reason to buy.

Second, IP67 means you can rinse it. In a sweaty summer or on a rainy day, you can wash it off after a run. For running gear, whether it washes decides how long you keep using it.

Third, the battery. Up to 10 hours still leaves 4 hours after a 6-hour marathon (10 − 6 = 4). Five minutes of charging gives 2 hours, so even a short top-up before you leave works. At 26.4 g it is light and easy on the neck.

Things to watch

First, you can't take it in the water. Even with IP67, swimming and underwater use are not covered. Dry the USB-C port completely before charging.

Second, the price. It is JPY 2,000 more than the previous OpenRun. If you won't use the extra battery and charging speed, the earlier model is an option.

Third, the sound. The Air 2 is bone conduction only, so it is built differently from the Pro 2, which adds an air-conduction driver for bass. If you want fuller sound, the Pro 2 is the step up.

Who is it for?

  • You run on roads or busy paths and want to hear what's around you
  • You want to keep using it when sweat or rain gets it wet, and rinse it clean
  • Many of your runs go past 2 hours, and you don't want to watch the battery

If bass depth matters most, the Pro 2 is closer to what you want.

OpenRun Air 2 Mini: how is it different, and which to choose?

The Mini weighs 25.9 g, 0.5 g lighter than the standard (26.4 − 25.9). It comes in black only.

As a guide, measure from behind one ear to behind the other. The Mini is recommended below 23.5 cm. If you're unsure, measuring once with a tape is the surest way.

Official prices are from the official Shokz Japan site on Oct 20, 2026 (tax included). Rakuten prices are the shops' range on the day I checked, and can include the Mini and other colors.

Choose by the product name: look for “Air 2.” A listing that says only “OpenRun” is the earlier model, and “Pro 2” is the higher-end one.
