HYROX Race-Day Packing ListWhat is allowed and banned under the official rules

For HYROX you need closed-toe shoes, running clothes and ID for check-in. Gloves, knee supports and belts are allowed; earphones and your own chalk are not. The rulebook has a sentence, "things not on the allowed list are in principle not allowed," so check anything you are unsure of against the list.

List of what you can and cannot use at HYROX

Equipment rules from the official rulebook, 2026/27 season edition (Singles).

The rulebook has a sentence that things not on the allowed list are in principle not usable. If you want to use something not in the table above, the sure way is to check the guide of the race you entered.

There is 1 more important rule. What you use, you carry yourself from start to finish. If you take something from someone along the way, 2 minutes are added as outside help (penalty list).

Shoes: the only rule is "closed toe"

The shoe rule is 1 thing: wear closed-toe shoes.

The race mixes 8km of running with sled push and pull, lunges and jumps. The fork in choosing is whether to lean toward a shoe for running or a shoe for bracing. PUMA has named models made with HYROX.

On has training models matched to gym movements.

Glove rule: gloves OK, grips not

The rulebook's allowed list says "gloves (not grips)." Gloves that cover the fingers are allowed, but grips that sit on the palm to help your hold are not.

Gloves help in the sled rope pull and the farmers carry with 200m of kettlebells. Both are stations where you move for a long time while gripping.

Knee supports and belts

Both are on the allowed list. There are 2 stations where the knee touches the floor: 80m of burpee broad jumps and 100m of sandbag lunges. In the lunges, the rule is that you touch the back knee to the floor on every step, so padding on the knee softens the hardness of the floor.

But both stay on for the whole 8km of running. You cannot receive or hand them off along the way. You need to think before buying whether you can run in them.

Water and food

Water is provided by the race at least once every time you pass the aisle between stations. If you want food, carry it yourself from the start. A back-worn hydration pack is on the allowed list.

One thing reads differently between official sources. The FAQ on the Japan official site says not to bring your own drink containers on the course. The rulebook allows hydration packs. If you want to run with a drink, check the guide of the race you entered.

Can you use a watch in HYROX?

Watches and smartwatches appear on neither the allowed nor the banned list. The rulebook's wording alone cannot say they are usable or not.

What can be said as fact is that the watch brand Amazfit was announced in 2024 as an official wearable partner of HYROX. How it is treated at races, check in the guide of the race you entered. The modes and prices by model are in the watch article.

Clothing

The rulebook has no detailed rules on clothing. You keep moving for about 1.5 hours at an indoor venue. Running clothes that absorb sweat and dry easily are the basics. PUMA has apparel with the HYROX name.

On's running shirts and shorts are also sold by many Rakuten shops.

Race-day packing list

If you run without wearing the timing chip, you are treated as not having started. The Japan official site says to wear it on the right ankle and return it at the finish.
