The only On shoe the maker describes as for HYROX is the Cloud X Tempo Pro. It is 267.4g at JPY 33,000, with sole rubber that names the sled stations. On has 6 gym models and 12 running models, and the lightest running one is 191g.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

If I buy 1 pair of On, I look at the running shelf first, not the gym shelf. Even the lightest gym shoe, the Tempo Pro, is 267.4g. The running range has a 210g race shoe. In a sport with an 8km run, a 57g gap is not light. Choose the gym shoe only if you have slipped on the sled before.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The 6 gym models run 267.4 to 365g. The one described as race spec is the Cloud X Tempo Pro
  • The 12 running models run 191 to 330g and JPY 18,700 to 35,200
  • Unused items bought at the official store can be returned within 30 days

On's HYROX shoes split into 2 shelves

On's Japan official site sorts shoes by use. The 2 shelves that matter for HYROX are "gym shoes" and "road running shoes."

The race is an 8km run and 8 stations. It sits right between the shelf of shoes to run in and the shelf of shoes to plant your feet in. Which shelf you choose from changes the shoe's character a lot. The numbers are what I read on the official pages on Oct 13, 2026.

Cloud X Tempo Pro: the 1 pair written as race spec

Of the 6 models, this is the only one with "fitness race spec." It carries a "hybrid fitness race" tag in the list.

The build is closer to a race shoe than a gym shoe. A carbon plate runs end to end, and the sole rolls forward. The sole rubber is called Missiongrip, designed with sled push and pull stations and wall balls in mind. It is the lightest of the gym shoes, about 23g lighter than the 2nd-lightest, the Cloud X 5 (290 − 267.4).

The price is the highest of the 6 models too. The gap from the Cloud X 5 is the plate and the lightness.

Cloud X 5 and Cloud X Tempo: for everyday training

The Cloud X 5 is the basic gym model. The official page says a plate for running is deliberately left out. The sole is thin and bends easily.

The Cloud X Tempo is the same line with a 2-layer sole of different densities added. Its positioning is "one pair for both running and high-intensity training." The weight is 17g more than the Cloud X 5.

The 2 Cloudpulse models: the side that supports weight

The Cloudpulse Pro is 365g, the heaviest of the 6, with a 6mm heel drop, the smallest. A plate that limits twisting sits on the heel side. Its official use is strength training.

The weight gap from the Tempo Pro is about 98g (365 − 267.4). For race day in HYROX, with its long running distance, it is the heavy-side shoe. Treating it as a shoe for days you lift heavy things in the gym fits the numbers.

Sorted lightest first. The gap between the lightest, the Cloudboom Strike 2 (191g), and the heaviest, the Cloudrunner 3 Max (330g), is 139g.

The Cloudrunner 3 Max is a stability shoe for running long distances without breaking down, with a 2-layer sole stacking Helion HF and a heel clip. Details are in the Cloudrunner 3 Max review.

The HYROX run is 1km, 8 times, 8km in all. The official category closest to that is the Cloudboom Volt, described as for "5 to 10km races." It is 210g with a carbon-blended plate. It is about 57g lighter than the Tempo Pro, the lightest gym shoe (267.4 − 210).

To keep the price down, the cheapest in the table are the Cloudsurfer Next and the Cloudrunner 3. These 2 differ by 38g (311 − 273), with the Cloudrunner 3 built with more weight on stability.

The Cloudsurfer 2 in the table: generation 3 went on early release at specialty stores on Oct 1, 2026. How it changes from the 2 is in the Cloudsurfer 3 review.

On lightness and price, the running shoe wins: 57g lighter and JPY 6,600 cheaper. Where the gym Tempo Pro comes out ahead is the sole rubber. When you push the sled, force leaks if your foot slides back. The Tempo Pro is the only one with a sole made with the sled stations in mind.

What the numbers say
  • Want to make time on the run → the running Cloudboom Volt
  • Do not want your feet to slip on the sled → the gym Cloud X Tempo Pro
  • Want to keep the price down → Cloudsurfer Next (JPY 18,700)
  • For gym training → Cloud X 5. Keep it separate from your race shoe

What to know when buying On

Items bought at On's official online store can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of the day they arrive, if unused. On pays shipping and return shipping. When you are unsure of the size, buying from the official store lets you redo it.

If you will match shirts and shorts from On too, the article on On running apparel compares 8 pieces by material and pockets.

What Rakuten sells is from sporting goods stores and other retailers. Items bought from a retailer follow that store's rules. The price is the same as the official site or, depending on color, sometimes cheaper.

HYROX gear is collected in the race-day packing list. For watches, see HYROX watches; for training, training equipment you can set up at home.
