Home › HYROX › How to Split HYROX Doubles

In HYROX Doubles, only the 8 stations can be shared. The 8km of running is run by both, all of it. How to split the stations is free: half and half, or by deciding who takes each station. Mixed uses men's weights, so women also carry the 6kg ball and the 24kg kettlebell.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

"One person per station" beats "half and half." It gives the shortest time standing still. At every swap, you put the equipment down and the partner grabs it again. Split the 1,000m row into 250m pieces and that is 3 swaps. One person going straight through is 0. The number of swaps becomes standing time as is.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Run 8km together. Separating gets a 1-minute penalty
  • How to split the stations is free. You can swap any number of times
  • Mixed uses men's Open weights. Only the target height differs by sex

What Doubles reduces and what it does not

SinglesDoubles (per person)
Run8km8km (not reduced)
SkiErg and Row1,000m eachDepends on the split (500m each if half)
Sled (push and pull)50m eachDepends on the split
Wall ball100 repsDepends on the split (50 reps if half)

In the run, both run all 1,000m together every time. If one goes ahead and separates, there is a 1-minute penalty. Over 3 separation infractions, no ranking is given.

For stations, the 2 enter the area together and leave together. How to split inside is free. The rulebook gives an example of swapping the row in 250m pieces.

Comparing the Doubles split in 3 ways

Using men's Open weights, I calculate the amount per person.

SplitPerson APerson BNumber of swaps (total across the 8 stations)
① Everything half and half (1 swap per station)Half of every stationHalf of every station8 swaps
② One person per station (4 stations each)SkiErg, sled pull, row, lungesSled push, burpees, carry, wall balls0 swaps
③ Cut fine (3 swaps per station)Half of every stationHalf of every station24 swaps

① and ③ are the same amount per person. What differs is the number of swaps; ③ is 3 times ①. At each swap, you put down the handle, the partner re-grips and starts moving. There is no fixed time for the swap itself, but the not-moving time piles up with the count.

② does not swap in the middle of a station. The resting side can rest the whole station. But since one person does all 4 stations, the amount in one station is the same as Singles. Whoever takes the wall balls throws all 100 alone.

What the numbers say
  • The fewer the swaps, the less the standing time
  • Stations one person can get through, one person gets through
  • Only for stations they cannot, split in half

Swap rules: the waiting side cannot sit

EventRule
SkiErgDo not hand over the handle
RowingDo not operate the handle, knob or foot strap for your partner
Farmers carry, sandbagDo not pass forward. Sideways or back
Wall ballDrop to the floor or hand over. Throwing to pass means the rep is not counted
AllThe resting side stays standing. No kneeling or sitting

The easy-to-miss line is the last one. You cannot sit and rest while waiting. Even the person resting for 4 stations in split ② waits standing.

In the row, the next person rowing tightens their own foot straps. Having the partner tighten them first is not allowed. The more finely you swap, the more of this retightening you get. This is why there is a reason for the split where one person goes through the row.

Mixed Doubles weights are the same as men's

Mixed uses the same weights as men's Open.

EventWomen's DoublesMixed (women too)Difference
Sled push102kg152kg50kg
Sled pull78kg103kg25kg
Farmers carry16kg × 224kg × 216kg
Sandbag10kg20kg10kg
Wall ball4kg6kg2kg

Women in Mixed use equipment one step heavier than in Women's Doubles. The smallest gap is the 2kg of the wall ball. And the target height is split by sex: 2.70m for women, 3.00m for men.

If you build it by the numbers alone, in Mixed there is a reason for the split where the man takes the sleds, where the weight gap is big, and the woman takes the wall balls, where the target is lower. How to choose a wall ball is in the wall ball article.

How to split the Relay

The Relay is 4 people, and each takes a 1km run twice with the 2 stations that follow. Who takes which leg is free, and you may take 2 in a row. Exchanges are high-fives at the designated place.

LegRun + station
11km + SkiErg 1,000m
21km + sled push 50m
31km + sled pull 50m
41km + burpee broad jump 80m
51km + row 1,000m
61km + farmers carry 200m
71km + sandbag lunges 100m
81km + wall balls 100 reps

The 4 people take 2 of the 8 legs each. The person with leg 8 throws the 100 wall balls alone. Putting the person on the team who can throw the most there is the first thing to decide.

Fees are per person

At the Osaka race in Jan 2027, Doubles is shown at JPY 26,125 per person and Relay at JPY 19,937.5 per person (the 6.5% service fee is extra). Compared with Singles' JPY 27,500, Doubles is only JPY 1,375 cheaper per person. Just as the amount does not halve, the fee barely changes (the Japan races article).

Doubles gear

Both run 8km, so choose shoes the same way as for Singles (6 recommended shoes). While waiting you can rest your grip, so whether you need gloves depends on who takes the carry and sled pull.
