HYROX penalties come in 6 levels: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes or more, and disqualification. The heaviest is not a technique fault but a miscount of run laps. Missing just 1 lap adds 3 to 7 minutes.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

Before practicing, memorize the venue's course map. A station fault is 15 seconds each time, but miscounting 1 run lap costs up to 7 minutes. That is 28 faults of 15 seconds. The cheapest way to cut time turns out to be counting laps.

Key points

  • Most station faults are a warning the 1st time and 15 seconds each from the 2nd
  • Missing 1 run lap costs 3, 5 or 7 minutes
  • Only chalk the event provides. Your own is 2 minutes

HYROX penalty quick table: compared by time added

Penalties from the 2026/27 season rulebook (Singles), in order of added time, smallest first.

Time addedFault
15 secondsFaults in the SkiErg, sled, burpee and row movements (warning the 1st time, then each time from the 2nd)
15 secondsKnee not touching the floor or not standing fully in the lunges (warning the 1st time)
15 secondsTaking the sandbag off the shoulder or putting it on the floor (each time)
30 secondsNot returning the kettlebell in the set form / not returning the sandbag
1 minuteStaying in the start tunnel
2 minutesPassing the entrance and exit arches the wrong way, or getting a station area's entrance and exit wrong
2 minutesUsing equipment or a lane that was not assigned
2 minutesUsing your own chalk, or using chalk anywhere other than the set place
2 minutesReceiving help from outside (such as being handed a drink or an item)
2 minutesPouring water on your body, or throwing away trash
3 minutesGetting the order of stations wrong (the 1st time; the 2nd is disqualification)
3 to 7 minutesMissing run laps (per lap)
DisqualificationSkipping a whole run or station, or not finishing a station

For most station faults, the 1st time is a warning only, and time is added from the 2nd. Only the wall balls work differently, with no warning and no time added. A rep that does not meet the standard simply is not counted.

Missing run laps is the heaviest penalty

The 1km run is built as 1, 2, 3 or 4 laps depending on the venue. The penalty for missing a lap changes with the course layout.

Laps per 1kmWhen 1 lap is missingLength of 1 lap (calculated)
4 laps3 minutesAbout 250m
3 laps5 minutesAbout 333m
2 laps7 minutesAbout 500m
1 lapDisqualification1,000m

On a 4-lap course, missing 1 lap adds 3 minutes in exchange for not running 250m. For someone running 1km in 6 minutes, 250m is 1:30. Running it would have been 1:30 faster (3 min − 1:30).

Conversely, a 15-second fault looks light. Even so, the 7-minute penalty is 28 times a 15-second fault (7 min ÷ 15 s = 28). Not miscounting laps affects your time more than taking care with each movement.

To avoid miscounting laps
  • After check-in, confirm "how many laps make 1km" on the course map
  • Say the count out loud at the same spot each lap
  • When in doubt, choose to run more. The penalty table covers only when you run short

Fault standards by station

Burpee broad jump

The standards are set in numbers. Your chest must touch the floor. Take off with both feet at once and land at once (front-to-back offset up to 5cm). The hand placement must be within 30cm of the front foot's toe.

Lunge

The back knee must touch the floor, and you must stand fully on every step. The sandbag stays on the shoulder and cannot be put down partway. If you get the weight wrong, you redo it at the correct weight. If you do not redo it, you are disqualified.

Farmers carry

When you finish with the kettlebell, you return it in the set form. A wrong return is 30 seconds, but fixing it before you leave the spot adds nothing.

Wall ball

Reps that do not meet the standard, such as missing the target or a shallow squat, are not counted. You keep throwing until you reach 100. Using powder chalk is 2 minutes.

Chalk and outside-help rules

You can use chalk (anti-slip powder) in only 2 places: the sled pull station and the Farmers Carry. And only chalk the event has placed on the spot. Chalk you bring yourself is a 2-minute penalty.

You also cannot receive drinks or items from people outside the course. You carry what you use yourself from start to finish. Water is provided by the event each time you pass through the corridor between stations.

What you can and cannot bring is listed in the race-day packing article.

What costs first-timers the most is laps and entrances/exits. Both never happen if you remember them. Those on their 2nd or later tighten the stations where 15-second faults come up easily. The wall ball standard and weight are in the wall ball article, and the rules by division in the article on choosing a division.

Results and corrections

Time is measured by a timing chip worn on your ankle. Most penalties are found automatically from this chip's readings. Results appear on the official results site right after the event ends, and for 48 hours after it ends, penalties can still be added or corrected.

If you run without wearing the chip, you are treated as not having started. Once you receive it at check-in, putting it on your ankle right there is the safe way.

FAQ

Who judges faults in HYROX?

At the station areas, referees. Entrances, exits and laps are checked automatically by the timing chip.

Is there a warning before a penalty?

Yes. For the 7 stations from SkiErg to lunges, there is 1 warning, and time is added from the next. Wall balls have no warning.

Are Doubles penalties the same as Singles?

The same table is used. Doubles adds a rule that running apart costs 1 minute (article on choosing a division).
