If you buy only 1 item from fall 2026's new running gear, it is the ASICS GT-2000 15 (JPY 16,500), released Aug 6. The sole is about 2mm thicker and about 20g lighter than the previous generation. 20 items got an official release date between Aug 1 and Oct 13. But even where a shoe is described as "released," 2 pairs have no yen price on the Japan official site. Release dates come in 3 kinds: early, general, and not set for Japan. The quick table is built so you can see that difference.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
If I buy only 1 item from the last 3 months' new releases, it is the ASICS GT-2000 15, released Aug 6. I set 3 conditions: buyable in a Japanese store today, the maker states the difference from the previous generation in numbers, and the extra you pay for that difference is small. Of the 20 items, the one that meets all 3 is this pair: about 2mm thicker, about 20g lighter, and the lowest price of the 10 shoes.
Key points
- Of the 10 shoes, 5 are ASICS. From early release to general release was 7 days for all 3
- 3 watches: fēnix 9 (Sept 10), Apple Watch Ultra 4 (Sept 18) and SUUNTO Run 2 (Sept 29). The lightest is the 35g Run 2
- The Adios Pro 5 has no Japan release set, and the Cloudsurfer 3 is early release at specialty stores only. I marked both in the quick table
Quick table of fall 2026 release dates, and the conditions for inclusion
There is 1 condition for inclusion. The maker's official source (a news release, a Japan official page or a press release in the maker's name) must state a release date between Aug 1 and Oct 13, 2026. Items with no official release date are left out, however well known.
20 items fit: 10 shoes, 2 packs and pouches, 3 watches, and 5 apparel and small items.

"Released" comes in 3 kinds
The parenthetical notes in the quick table are the point of this article. The date called "release" is not 1 date.
- Early release: The day sales begin only on the maker's online store. The day it reaches ordinary stores comes later
- General release: The day it reaches directly operated stores and sporting goods stores
- Global release: The date in the home-market announcement. The Japan date is set separately
For the 3 ASICS pairs, I counted the days from early release to general release.
| Model | Early release | General release | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| METASLEEK | Aug 20 | Aug 27 | 7 days |
| SONICBLAST 2 | Sep 3 | Sep 10 | 7 days |
| YOGIRI SPEED | Sep 10 | Sept 17 | 7 days |
| Nike Alphafly 4 | Sept 17 | Oct 29 | 42 days |
| On Cloudsurfer 3 | Oct 1 (specialty stores) | Early 2027 | More than 3 months |
All 3 ASICS pairs were exactly 7 days. Wait 1 week after the announcement and you can try them on in a store before buying. Nike and On have waits of a very different length.
That is why I count new items by "the day they reached Japanese stores," not "the release date." It is the first reason I made the GT-2000 15 the pick.
New running shoes: 10 pairs
Some fall releases are written up in their own articles after this table: the stability On Cloudrunner 3 Max (Aug 6, early release), the thick-sole Mizuno Sky Prime (Sept 11) and the race shoe Skechers Aero Elite (Oct 2).
ASICS GT-2000 15 (Aug 6)
What's new: The official announcement says the sole is about 2mm thicker and the weight about 20g lighter than the previous generation (men's 27.0cm, per foot). The sole material FF BLAST MAX carries over, tuned to the softer side. The rubber at heel and forefoot is AHARPLUS, about 3 times as wear-resistant as the old rubber.
Adding thickness normally adds weight from the material. Here it went the other way. The weight I read from the official page in this site's ASICS article is 252g, so the previous generation is about 272g, and the share lighter is about 7.4% (20 ÷ 272).
Strengths: Widths come in 2 kinds, standard and wide, and the men's goes up to 32.0cm. Many new models come in just 1 width, so a wider range of fitting feet is a strength.
Watch out: It is a stability shoe with the 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM, which limits the foot collapsing inward on landing. The more you want to limit that collapse, the more this mechanism works for you.
Good fit: Someone looking for a first pair, or a pair for every day. For a light race-day shoe, there are other ways to choose. Details are in the article on 6 new ASICS shoes for 2026.

Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 11,550 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 19,800 depending on the shop. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Super Sports XEBIOSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanNew Balance SuperComp Elite v6 (Aug 6) and SuperComp Rebel (Aug 20)
What's new: The Elite v6 is a race shoe whose sole changes to a new foam blend called Infinion, with a full-length carbon plate. The Rebel is a new model pairing the same Infinion with a nylon plate. It is not the next generation of the similarly named FuelCell Rebel v5.
| Elite v6 | SuperComp Rebel | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plate | Carbon | Nylon | — |
| Weight (men's) | 198g | 222g | 24g |
| Official price | JPY 31,900 | JPY 23,980 | JPY 7,920 |
Strengths: You can match race and training shoes with the same foam. It is a pairing where the feel of the shoe is less likely to change only on race day.
Watch out: Width is just 1 option for both: men's D, women's B. The Elite v6 is priced above the previous generation's price at announcement.
Good fit: The Elite v6 for those chasing a personal best in the full marathon, and the Rebel for training toward it. For wide feet or no plate, the 1080v15 fits. The difference from the previous generation is in the article on New Balance's 2026 new releases.

Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 28,710 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 284,800 depending on the shop. Prices change daily.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanASICS METASLEEK (Aug 20, early release)
What's new: A new training model with no plate. The sole is FF TURBO SQUARED. It is built to make ground contact easy to feel, a shoe that helps build the sense of running on your own feet.
Strengths: At a time when plated shoes are multiplying, it deliberately launched a new shoe without a plate. It turns a race material into a form you can use daily without a plate.
Watch out: It comes in 1 color, and the shops that sell it are limited to some directly operated stores and SteP SPORTS.
Good fit: A second pair for someone whose shoes have all become plated. The maximum sole of about 29mm and the difference from the Novablast 6 are calculated in the METASLEEK article.
ASICS METASLEEK
The lowest price on Rakuten was JPY 19,800 (as of 10/13). Prices move daily. Try shoes on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit differs by brand, so read the shop's return and exchange terms before you buy.
RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanNike Pegasus Plus 2 (late August)
What's new: Nike's announcement says energy return is up by 18% or more over the original Pegasus Plus. A visible Air Zoom sits in the forefoot, and the last is the MR10 2.0, the same as the Pegasus 42. It is a last that widens the toe and forefoot.
Strengths: The Japan official numbers are about 249g in 27cm and a 10mm offset (drop). Anyone whose foot fit the Pegasus 42 can move to the lighter side on the same last.
Watch out: The release timing in the announcement is "late August," with no date. The product page has no number for sole thickness either.
Good fit: Someone who owns the Pegasus 42 and wants to add a faster training shoe. If 1 pair has to do everything, the 42 fits. The difference from the 42 is calculated in the article on Nike's 2026 new releases.
ASICS SONICBLAST 2 (Sept 3, early release) and YOGIRI SPEED (Sept 10, early release)
Both are shoes for people aiming to break 4 hours in the full marathon. The difference is in the plate material.
SONICBLAST 2: The resin plate ASTROPLATE has changed to a shape that wraps the forefoot hollow from both sides. It suits people who want a plate easier to handle than carbon. It says lighter than the previous model, but the announcement gives no figure in grams.
YOGIRI SPEED: The carbon plate splits into a fork at the heel. About 13g lighter than the previous S4+ YOGIRI, at about 227g (27.0cm, per foot). The previous model is about 240g, so the share lighter is about 5.4% (13 ÷ 240).
Strengths: It names a target time, "Sub-4," and splits plate stiffness into 2 levels. The price gap is small too, so the only choosing criterion is the plate.
Watch out: The YOGIRI SPEED comes only in standard width.
Good fit: Someone choosing a race-day pair at around a 4-hour pace. How plated shoes compare with each other is in the article on 10 carbon thick-sole shoes.
ASICS SONICBLAST 2

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping Japanadidas Adizero Adios Pro 5 (Sept 22, Japan not set)
What's new: The announced figures are about 177g (UK 8.5), 39mm heel, 35mm forefoot, 4mm drop. It says about 23g, or 12%, lighter than the previous-generation Pro 4. The carbon changes from the rod-shaped ENERGYRODS to the rim-shaped ENERGYRIM. The explanation is 9% more rebound.
Strengths: A race shoe that lost 23g in 1 generation. Running the full marathon at a 1.2m stride, each foot leaves the ground about 17,581 times. 23g × 17,581 times comes to about 404kg.
Watch out: The announcement says "on sale worldwide from Sept 22," but the Japan official feature page I read in this site's adidas article said "no release date set for Japan."
Good fit: Someone going for a full marathon time in a low shoe with a 4mm drop. If buying in Japan now, there is the Pro 4. The article on adidas's 2026 new releases tabulates the 2 generations.

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanOn Cloudsurfer 3 (Oct 1, specialty stores only)
What's new: The sole is now a new foam called Surreal. On's announcement says it is lighter, softer and more rebounding than the Helion that has been used for daily shoes. It also lists a calculated result: combined with the diagonal-hole structure, compression is 15.5% deeper than with the foam alone.
Strengths: The announced numbers are 285g (men's US 8.5), 8mm drop and USD 160. A generation change that adds softness, with the dollar price held from the previous generation.
Watch out: Oct 1 is early release at running specialty stores only; full release including on.com and directly operated stores is early 2027. The announcement says the 15.5% is a calculated figure, not a measured one.
Good fit: Someone who wants softer landings on jogs and long runs. The weight is 25g more than the 2's 260g. The difference from the 2 is calculated in the Cloudsurfer 3 review.
On Rakuten you can buy up to the Cloudsurfer 2 generation, so choose by the number in the product name.

What's new: The newest shoe of the 20. The sole is FF LUXE PLUS with PureGEL PLUS in the heel. A shoe for people who want soft cushioning and a smooth ride.
Strengths: A shoe for slow days, made to be exactly that from its name. It is also described as looking easy to wear outside of running.
Watch out: The announcement has no weight, sole stack or drop. It is sold at the ASICS online store and directly operated stores, and the price is the highest of the 5 ASICS shoes.
Good fit: Someone who puts softness first. If you want to compare by numbers, the Gel-Nimbus 28, which lists weight and stack, fits.

For backpacks and vests, the ones whose official announcement went as far as an Aug-Oct release date were these 2 items from 1 company. Current Salomon and The North Face products have no release date on their official pages, so they are not included here.
GronG Fit-in Pack 10 (Sept 19)
What's new: The maker's announcement says 10L capacity, about 290g. The shoulder straps are 40cm long and straight with little curve. It explains it is fitted to Japanese body-size data and made less likely to press on the sides of the torso.
There are 2 ways it limits bounce. A cord hooked on the bottle cap stops the bottle's vertical movement. A bungee cord on the back collapses the compartment when you carry little.
Strengths: Weight per 1L is 29g (290 ÷ 10). In the table of this site's backpack article, a 3L vest is 88.7g and a 15L pack is 19.4g. As a 10L, it sits plainly between them. It also has a divider that fits a 13-inch laptop.
Watch out: A bottle is not included. There is 1 size and the only color is black.
Good fit: A first pack for commute runs or days you run carrying gear. For trail races, a vest with flasks fits better. Vests are compared in the backpack and vest article.

Strengths: The main compartment is big enough for a 6.9-inch smartphone, with a mesh divider inside. You can keep keys and smartphone apart.
Watch out: The announcement has no capacity figure. The bottle is separate too.
Good fit: Someone who wants to carry only water and a smartphone on road training. If you carry a jacket too, the pack above.

| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Sept 18 | Up to 25 hours |
| SUUNTO Run 2 (4GB) | Sept 29 | Up to 24 hours |
Garmin fēnix 9 series (Sept 10)
What's new: 22 models in all. The announcement says that from the previous fēnix 8, built-in storage goes from 32GB to 64GB, memory is up 50%, and map redraw speed is up to 30% faster. The storage is exactly double (64 ÷ 32).
Sibling difference: At the same 47mm, the solar Pro Dual Power is 84g and about 54 hours. The standard fēnix 9 is 75g and about 30 hours. For 9g more weight, the battery lasts 24 hours longer (84 − 75, 54 − 30).
Strengths: It comes in 3 sizes, 43mm, 47mm and 51mm, and the 51mm Pro Dual Power lasts about 75 hours on standard settings. One watch reaches all the way to a 100-mile race that spans 2 nights.
Watch out: The 43mm is about 18 hours, enough for a full marathon but not for a long trail.
Good fit: Someone who uses the same watch in the mountains and in town and wants to see maps on the watch. For road only, lighter and cheaper models are lined up in the running watch article.

What's new: Apple's announcement says up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in low power mode. Outdoor workouts get up to 25 hours in the "Long Workout" setting, 25% longer than the previous generation. Working backward, the previous generation is 20 hours (25 ÷ 1.25).
The heart rate sensor is new too, measuring heart rate every 5 seconds. A "readiness" score from 0 to 10 for how prepared the body is has been added.
Strengths: A 15-minute charge gives up to 18 hours. Even if you forgot to charge on race morning, a day's worth comes back while you get ready.
Watch out: Divide the price by battery hours and the price per hour is more than twice the SUUNTO Run 2's (see the table note). This site's watch article calculates with the 18 hours on the specs page, the normal setting.
Good fit: Someone who uses an iPhone and wears the same watch on non-running days too. For running only, a dedicated model is better value for the price.

What's new: A 35g body that can hold free world maps on the watch. Screen brightness goes from the original's 600 nits to 2,000 nits, about 3.3 times (2,000 ÷ 600). The announcement says battery capacity is 29% larger than the original.
Strengths: The lightest of the 3, and on the cheaper side of the 2 with prices. Maps fit in the 35g body. Connect earphones and you can listen to music without a smartphone.
Watch out: Up to 24 hours on the highest-accuracy GPS. For races with a time limit over 24 hours, you would lower the setting. Storage differs 16 times between 4GB and 64GB (64 ÷ 4). The price difference is in the table note. If you load maps widely, take the 64GB side.

LEDLENSER HF4R (mid-September)
What's new: LEDLENSER has replaced its HF series of headlamps. The HF4R is the lightest of them at 92g (with battery). It runs on both a dedicated rechargeable battery and AAA alkaline batteries. Up to 650 lumens, up to 45 hours on the lowest setting, IP67 dust and water resistance.
A mechanism few readers know about is the ALB, which went into the upper models HF6R and HF7R. A sensor measures the distance to what is ahead and automatically changes brightness and beam spread: wide and soft up close, strong far away. It claims response twice as fast as before and 10 times the sensor sensitivity.
| HF4R | HF6R | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight (with batteries) | 92g | 130g |
| Maximum brightness | 650 lumens | 900 lumens |
| ALB (automatic dimming) | None | Yes |
| Dry-cell batteries | Usable (AAA) | Not usable |
| Official price | JPY 7,480 | JPY 12,100 |
Strengths: When the charge runs out, you can carry on with convenience-store AAA batteries. In a race that runs through the night, that insurance pays off. On paper, it has room even over the "80 lumens or more for 4 hours or more" that Mt.FUJI 100 requires (the mandatory gear article).
Watch out: 650 lumens is a temporary-setting figure, and that brightness does not last 45 hours. The official release timing is phrased "mid-September." Older models with the same name (HF4R Core) still remain in stores, so choose by looking at the product name.
Good fit: Someone looking for a light first headlamp for a first night trail run. On rocky paths, the HF6R with the ALB fits.

Watch out: The announcement has no weight or fine details of the fabric. It is sold at 2 directly operated stores and the official online store, and some items are not stocked at some stores.

Strengths: At 5 hours a week, 460 hours is 92 weeks (460 ÷ 5). That works out to a battery you need not replace for over a year and a half.
Watch out: It is not needed by someone for whom the watch's wrist sensor is enough. The price is about one third of the watch itself.
Good fit: Someone who wants to read heart rate more finely than from the wrist.
New Balance Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 Limited Collection (Oct 1)
What's new: 3 limited items made for the race. A short-sleeve T-shirt with the course as the pattern, a 5-panel cap, and quarter-length socks. The T-shirt is 100% recycled polyester mesh with NB Dry, which moves sweat away.

| 5-panel cap | JPY 5,940 | Moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabric |
| Pro Run quarter socks | JPY 2,420 | Mesh on the instep, arch support, reflective logo on the heel |
Strengths: The socks even include graduated compression and arch support. Though a commemorative item, it is made as running gear.
Watch out: It is a "limited" collection. The quantity is not in the announcement, and the stores that sell it are limited to the official online store, directly operated stores and some shops.
Good fit: People running this race, or who ran it. If choosing by function, there are items at the same price level with weights listed too.
Choosing by the difference from the previous generation: 1 pick from fall 2026's new releases
Let me line up the conditions again. Buyable in a Japanese store today. The difference from the previous generation shown in numbers. The extra paid for that difference is small.
- Dropped by the 1st: the Adios Pro 5 (Japan not set) and the Cloudsurfer 3 (specialty stores only)
- Dropped by the 2nd: the METASLEEK, SONICBLAST 2 and GEL-SLOWCUSH (no weight number in the announcement), plus the SuperComp Rebel with no previous generation, the 2 GronG items, and the 3 apparel items
- Dropped by the 3rd: the Elite v6, whose price went up, the fēnix 9, with no official price listed, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4, with a high price per hour
5 remain: the GT-2000 15, Pegasus Plus 2, YOGIRI SPEED, SUUNTO Run 2 and HF4R. Among them, only the GT-2000 15 writes "lighter" and "thicker" in the same sentence.
The Pegasus Plus 2 is a 2nd pair and the YOGIRI SPEED a race-day shoe, so the days you wear them are limited. The Run 2 and HF4R are not urgent purchases for someone already served by their current watch and light.
An everyday shoe that got thicker, got lighter, and lets you choose width. That is why I pick the GT-2000 15. If foot collapse does not bother you, the Novablast 6 fits too.

I also left out the On LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, released July 30, 2 days before the period. It is a laceless race shoe, 158g with a 5mm drop on the Japan official page.
The Alphafly 4 is 5% lighter than the previous generation in the announcement (men's 8.5). The Japan official weight is about 188g in 26.5cm, so the previous generation works back to about 198g (188 ÷ 0.95). But the Japan official page on the day I checked said "coming soon."
The Mizuno HYPERWARP PURE 2 is about 135g in the announced figures (27.0cm, per foot). It is about 2g lighter than the previous generation, with the sole 3.5mm thicker at both front and back. The announcement has no price. For anyone planning to buy a race shoe within the year, there is a reason to wait until Nov 6.

How many new running shoes are there for fall 2026?
10 pairs have official release dates in Aug-Oct. 5 of them are ASICS, and for all 3 of those with early releases, the wait from early to general release was 7 days.
When a new model comes out, is it fine to buy the previous generation?
If the generation change is small in the numbers, the previous generation is no trouble. In this article, the Yogiri Speed (13g) is that case. For a generation like the GT-2000 15, where both stack and weight moved, choosing the new one makes sense.
Why are there so few new backpacks and vests?
Because few companies put a release date in their official announcements. Shoes and watches get dated announcements, but backpacks often just appear on product pages. I only included items with an official date, so it came to 2.
When is the Adios Pro 5 released in Japan?
Not decided. The home-market announcement says worldwide sales from Sept 22, and the Japan official feature page says "no release date set for Japan." For shoes for fall and winter races, picking from those with a price on the Japan official site is the safe way. The article on choosing shoes by target time lines up the shoes you can buy now.
