The SUUNTO Run 2 is a watch for runners who want to judge pace from the screen on full marathon race day. What decides it is the 2,000-nit screen and EnergySense, which gives an energy gauge. Released Sep 29, 2026; 35g case, up to 24 hours of GPS at best accuracy, JPY 59,950 for the 4GB model.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

If you are choosing by battery and price, buy the sibling Race S, not the Run 2. The Race S is JPY 55,000 on the Japan official site and lasts up to 30 hours at best-accuracy GPS. That is JPY 4,950 cheaper and 6 hours longer than the Run 2. It has maps too. What you pay the Run 2 for narrows to 3 things: the 2,000-nit screen, the marathon screens, and the light weight.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Battery capacity is about 29% up from the original, yet GPS time is only up 20%. Run time per mAh is about 7% shorter
  • Weight with strap goes from 36g to 53g. Of the 17g increase, only 3g is the case
  • The gap to the 64GB model is JPY 4,950. The price is about 8% more, for 16 times the storage

Is the Run 2 a buy? The newer one has a shorter battery than its sibling

The SUUNTO Run 2 is a buy for runners who want a bright screen and an energy gauge on full marathon race day. Case 35g, up to 24 hours. On battery and price alone, its sibling Race S (30 hours, JPY 4,950 cheaper) wins.

It is a new model two weeks after launch, yet its battery is shorter than its sibling's. I separate what this watch costs you for by lining it up against the original Run and the Race S. The table of 12 models across other makers is in the article on choosing running watches by battery time.

vs the original Run: what changed from the previous generation

I lined it up with the original Run and calculated the gaps, including price.

Apart from the price, the table is from SUUNTO Japan's comparison article (Sep 28, 2026). Everyday battery for both assumes 1 hour of outdoor exercise a day. Prices are from the Japan official site on Oct 13 (tax included); the original is the fabric-strap model and the Run 2 is the 4GB model.

The price is JPY 25,300 more (59,950 − 34,650). As a ratio, about 1.73 times (59,950 ÷ 34,650). It reads less as a generation swap than a move up 1 price band.

Battery is 29% larger, but time grew only 20%

This is the most interesting part of the watch's insides. Battery capacity went up 85mAh, about 29% (85 ÷ 295). But GPS time went up 4 hours, 20% (4 ÷ 20). The extra capacity did not turn into time one for one.

Divide to see how many minutes of GPS you get per mAh. The original is about 4.07 minutes (20 hours × 60 ÷ 295). The Run 2 is about 3.79 minutes (24 hours × 60 ÷ 380). That is about 7% shorter (3.79 ÷ 4.07 = 0.93).

So the Run 2 uses more power than the original. The parts that changed are in the table: a screen 3.3 times brighter, a new-generation GPS, and a heart-rate sensor that reads 6 LEDs on 12 channels.

The stars of the Run 2's generation change are the screen and the sensing parts, more than battery time.

The 17g increase is mostly the strap

Weight with strap went from 36g to 53g, up 17g. On the numbers alone, it looks like lightness was thrown away.

The case alone is 3g more (35 − 32). The remaining 14g is the strap difference. The original has a fabric strap at 4g (36 − 32), the Run 2 a silicone one at 18g (53 − 35). Both are 22mm wide, so swapping to a light fabric strap shrinks the weight gap to about the case's 3g. There is room here to cut weight without spending money.

vs the Race S and the original Run (sibling models)

Among SUUNTO's running watches, the one close to the Run 2 on price is the Race S.

From the Japan official site on Oct 13, 2026 (tax included). The Race S is the stainless steel model; the titanium model is JPY 66,000. GPS battery figures are all for the best-accuracy setting. "Per hour" is the official price ÷ GPS battery hours (e.g. 55,000 ÷ 30 = JPY 1,833). Weights include the strap for the Run 2 and Run; for the Race S, it is the "60g" in the spec table.

vs the Race S

The Race S is JPY 4,950 cheaper than the Run 2 (59,950 − 55,000), and its GPS lasts 6 hours longer (30 − 24). In the power-saving "Tour mode" it lasts up to 120 hours, and it includes maps. It has over 115 sport modes, more than 3 times the Run 2's 35.

The Run 2 wins on 3 things. The 1st is the 2,000-nit screen. The 2nd is the marathon mode and EnergySense that only the Run line has. The 3rd is weight: comparing the listed weights, it is 7g lighter (60 − 53).

vs the original Run

Of the 3 watches, the original has the lowest price per 1 hour: JPY 1,733 (34,650 ÷ 20). It has no maps, but ghost runner and marathon mode are shared.

Which one for you
  • Want the watch to show an energy gauge in a marathon. Want an easy-to-read screen on sunny days → Run 2
  • Choosing by battery time and price. Also using it for trail or cycling → Race S
  • Measuring distance and pace is enough. Won't look at maps → the original Run

How does it compare with rivals at JPY 50,000–70,000?

Lined up against rivals' watches at a similar price, the Run 2's strengths narrow to the screen and the marathon-specific features.

WatchesPriceWeightGPS battery
SUUNTO Run 2JPY 59,95053gUp to 24 hours
COROS PACE 4 ProJPY 69,96043gUp to 60 hours
Amazfit Balance 3JPY 63,80062gUp to 41 hours
Each maker's Japan official listing (tax included; numbers I read in our individual articles on Oct 13–16, 2026). GPS is best accuracy for the Run 2, normal mode for the PACE 4 Pro, and the high-accuracy setting for the Balance 3. Weights include the strap for the Run 2, the nylon band for the PACE 4 Pro, and exclude the strap for the Balance 3. This is not a like-for-like comparison.

On battery time, the PACE 4 Pro lasts 36 hours longer (60 − 24) for JPY 10,010 more (69,960 − 59,950). Even so, for runners who want a bright screen and an energy gauge on full marathon race day, the Run 2's design hits the target.

If you mostly do trail running through the night, there is also COROS PACE 4 Pro; if you want one watch to measure HYROX and triathlon too, Amazfit Balance 3.

What I like

The 1st is that it puts brightness in numbers. 2,000 nits is about 3.3 times the original (2,000 ÷ 600). A screen where pace, heart rate and distance are easy to read even in direct sunlight. For a watch you look at while running, spending money here makes sense.

The 2nd is EnergySense. A feature that estimates, while you run, how much longer you can keep the current intensity. You compare "Sustain" (an estimate of how far you can keep going at the current intensity) and "Remaining" (distance left to the goal). A screen that a watch with only pace and heart rate doesn't have.

The 3rd is that maps are free, and you choose the area to load. Contour lines and place names appear. For people who run in the morning while traveling, you keep the reassurance of seeing where you are without relying on a signal.

The 4th is charging speed. A full charge takes about 1.5 hours.

The 5th is that the case stays at 35g. It made the screen 3 times brighter and added 85mAh of battery, while keeping the case to +3g and +0.2mm of thickness.

Things to watch

The first thing to look at is the price. JPY 2,498 per 1 hour is JPY 665 more than its sibling Race S's JPY 1,833 (2,498 − 1,833). For someone choosing a watch by battery, that number doesn't pay off.

The 2nd is the 24-hour ceiling. It is plenty for a full marathon, more than 3 times a race with a 7-hour cutoff (24 ÷ 7 = 3.4). On the other hand, in long trail races with cutoffs over 24 hours, the best-accuracy setting won't last to the end.

The 3rd is that EnergySense is in beta. Use the display as a guide.

Who the Run 2 suits

Good fit
  • Your goal is a full marathon, and you want a screen to help judge pace on race day
  • You often run in strong sun and put screen brightness first
  • You run while traveling or on unfamiliar roads and want to see a map on the watch
  • You are moving up from the original Run and want to add brightness and maps

If battery time and price come first, there is also the Race S, or the COROS PACE 4 (JPY 36,300, up to 41 hours).

Official prices are from the Japan official site on Oct 13, 2026 (tax included). The Rakuten range for the Run 2 includes both 4GB and 64GB.

The gap between the 2 models is JPY 4,950 (64,900 − 59,950). The price is about 8% more (4,950 ÷ 59,950), for 16 times the storage (64 ÷ 4). The extra 60GB works out to about JPY 83 per GB (4,950 ÷ 60).

Part of the listed capacity is used by the system. The 4GB model has less usable space than that. You would be putting both maps and music in it.

Here is how I decide. If you load only your local map and no music, 4GB. If you swap travel maps in and out, or put music on the watch, 64GB. You can't add storage later, so if torn, pay the JPY 4,950 up front.

Buy from the Japan official site or from retailers. The warranty, per the official notice, is 2 years from the purchase date for the watch itself. At Rakuten shops, read the "Run 2" in the product name and the capacity (4GB/64GB) first. The original Run shows up in the same search.

FAQ

How does the SUUNTO Run 2 fit? Does it work on a thin wrist?

The official numbers are 46×46×11.7mm and 35g for the case. Its sibling Race S is 45×45×11.4mm, so the Run 2 is 1mm bigger in length and width and 0.3mm thicker (11.7 − 11.4). The supplied strap is 22mm-wide silicone in size S/M. Any 22mm-wide strap can be swapped in.

Is the Run 2's battery enough for a full marathon or 100km?

Yes. With best-accuracy GPS it lasts up to 24 hours. For a full marathon, that is more than 3 times a race with a 7-hour cutoff. For a 100km ultra with a 14-hour cutoff, you have 10 hours to spare (24 − 14). It falls short only in races with cutoffs over 24 hours. Battery time varies with settings and use.

How does the SUUNTO Run 2 differ from the original Run? Is the original fine?

If you don't need the map or the screen brightness, the original is enough. Its Japan official price is JPY 34,650, with up to 20 hours of GPS. Ghost runner and marathon mode are in both. EnergySense and offline maps are only in the Run 2.
