The Tacx Nera is Garmin's smart trainer: you mount your own road bike on it and ride indoors. It goes on sale Nov 6, 2026 (pre-orders from Oct 29) at JPY 189,000. The base itself moves front to back and side to side through a built-in motion pod, which cuts the locked-in feel of a roller.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The Nera is my pick for riders who train indoors several times a week. A motion pod built into the body moves front to back and side to side, and a 6.13 kg flywheel (35.9 kg of inertial mass) builds a resistance change close to the real road. Power error is ±1%. On a rainy day or after dark, you can stack the same workout on the same numbers. If I were moving my long bike sessions indoors, the movement is the first thing I would check.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • A motion pod built into the body moves front to back and side to side, easing the locked-in feel of a roller
  • Power error ±1%, simulated grade up to 20%, maximum load 2,200 W
  • A 6.13 kg flywheel gives 35.9 kg of inertial mass. A Shimano 11-speed cassette is included

Bringing indoor bike training closer to the real thing on rainy days

The bike leg is the longest part of a triathlon. When rain or darkness keeps you off the road, training stops.

The Tacx Nera is a smart trainer for exactly those days: you mount your own bike and ride. I cover bike gear as a whole in the triathlon bike gear article. Here I read only the Nera.

What is new? Movement that cuts the locked-in feel of a roller

What is newDetailsWhat it means for training
Built-in motion podNatural front-to-back and side-to-side movementEases the strange feel of a fixed bike
Power accuracy±1%Easier to compare numbers from the same workout
Race modeFaster communicationSteadier virtual races
Alpine supportTacx Alpine, sold separatelyBrings the feel of climbing closer still
I put the items marked as new or updated in Garmin's news release into this table.

Motion pod: On an indoor roller the bike is fixed, and your body has no side-to-side sway. The Nera moves with its base, front to back and side to side, and Garmin says this greatly eases the fixed feel.

Flywheel: The 6.13 kg flywheel has 35.9 kg of inertial mass, about 5.9 times its weight (35.9 ÷ 6.13). Garmin describes it as a natural inertia close to riding outside.

Noise: Garmin claims the highest level of quiet among flywheel trainers on the market, with a design that holds down vibration and noise. If you ride at night in an apartment, that number matters.

Grade: It simulates climbs up to 20%. With the Tacx training app and its live footage, you can ride steep Alpine roads or the cobblestones of Milan.

What I like

You ride your own bike. You don't need a second bike for training. You keep your position and sit just as you do in a race.

You can trust the numbers. Power error is ±1%. If you repeat the same workout for weeks and want to compare your progress, that is a big point.

Easy to choose as a first trainer. Garmin says the natural inertia makes it a good first indoor trainer. The cassette is included, so you can start riding right out of the box.

It works with the apps you already use. It connects to common training apps such as ZWIFT and mywhoosh. It can pair with several devices at once, so you can ride in the Tacx app and still record the session on a Garmin Edge bike computer (Edge 1060 article).

Things to watch

  • The price is JPY 189,000. That is high for indoor training gear. If you ride only 1 session a week, it is hard to get your money's worth.
  • It weighs 24.7 kg. It is sized to be left in place. The footprint is 629 × 779 mm, so you need about 0.49 square meters of floor (0.629 × 0.779).
  • How the motion pod feels depends on the rider. How much it moves and whether you like it is something you can't know without trying. If you can test one in a shop after launch, it is worth the visit.

Who is the Tacx Nera for?

  • Best for: riders who don't want rain or darkness to stop their bike training. Riders who want to sit on their own bike in the same position as a race. Riders who compare training by power numbers. Riders who also train at night and care about quiet.

If you mostly ride outside and train indoors only a few times a month, you could first sort out a bike computer and safety gear (Varia RearVue 820 article).

The official price is the tax-included price in Garmin's news release. The per-session figure divides by 3 sessions a week for 3 years, which is my own assumption.

The Nera and the Edge 1060 go on sale the same day. Buying both comes to JPY 317,000, but the Nera alone is enough to start training if you have a phone or computer app. If you're unsure, start with the Nera. The reason: a trainer is what ends the days when training stops, and you can add the bike computer later.

If you spend long hours on the bike, you can review your watch too. I covered a watch for long distances in the Enduro 4 article.
