The HOKA Cielo X1 3.0 is a buy for runners who want one race-day-only shoe for full or half marathons. The deciding point is the weight, 213g at 28cm, with the carbon plate and PEBA foam left as in the original. Released Jan 30, 2026, JPY 38,500.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

What you pay for in this shoe is not lightness but "nothing taken out to get there." The technology section of the announcement still has the same lines for the carbon plate and the PEBA foam as the original. Only 2 lines changed: the upper fabric and the outsole rubber. The weight came off the outer skin alone, without touching the parts that make the ride, so I put this shoe first in line for race day.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Announced weights are 213g (men's 28cm) and 175g (women's 25cm): 38g apart across 3cm
  • 13g lighter than its sibling the Rocket X 3, JPY 7,700 more. About JPY 592 per gram saved
  • Stack and width aren't in the announcement. 2 colors; sizes are unisex 23.0–29.0cm and 30.0cm

What kind of shoe is the Cielo X1 3.0? 213g, 7mm drop, JPY 38,500

The Cielo X1 3.0 is HOKA's race shoe with a carbon plate and PEBA foam, and it's a buy as a pair for race day only. Out Jan 30, 2026, JPY 38,500, 213g at 28cm. What decides it: it is 51g lighter than the original with the plate and foam that make the ride left in.

In a race shoe, taking out weight usually means taking something out. Yet when I put the announcement next to the original's, I can't find a part that was cut.

Numbers from Deckers Japan's announcement (Jan 30, 2026). Weight is per shoe. The price matched the listing on the Japan official product page that I read on Oct 13, 2026 for our article on 12 HOKA shoes. The product page weight I read in that article was also 213g (reference UK9.5).

The announcement says "a World Athletics approved shoe" twice. That means you can wear it as is in certified races.

It's sold at the HOKA official online store, directly operated stores, and some retailers. It isn't a shoe you'll find in every shop.

vs the original Cielo X1 | only 2 lines changed, the upper and the sole

The comparison is the original Cielo X1, released Feb 1, 2024. The 3.0 announcement says "a major weight reduction from the previous model."

MidsoleDurabrasion Rubber in key spotsMolded polyurethaneSwapped
Plate / foamCarbon fiber plate, PEBA foamSame row
From the two announcements. Per gram is price ÷ weight (38,500 ÷ 264 = JPY 145.8, 38,500 ÷ 213 = JPY 180.8). The size range was also unisex 23.0–29.0cm and 30.0cm for the original, and it too came in 2 colors.

51g is 19.3% of the original's weight (51 ÷ 264). Close to 1/5 of the shoe is gone, and the price hasn't moved even JPY 1.

Convert the lost 51g to the full-marathon distance. At a 1m stride, one foot lands about 21,098 times, so 51g × 21,098 = about 1,076kg. That is over a tonne you no longer lift per foot.

From "gluing on" rubber to "pressing" resin

The source of the lightness is clear from the technology section. The original's sole said "zone rubber placed where needed": rubber glued only where the shoe meets the ground, with the unglued areas saving weight.

The 3.0's sole is a single line: "compression-molded polyurethane outsole." It drops the glued-on rubber sheets and swaps in a layer of polyurethane pressed in a mold, and claims "light weight with excellent grip and durability."

Rubber is on the heavy side among a shoe's parts. Changing the material itself lets you cut weight without reducing the area that touches the ground. The 3.0's lightness comes from this switch.

The upper follows the same idea, going from a knit to a "leno weave" fabric made by twisting threads around each other. The announcement says "ultra-light and breathable." The part of the upper that moves has a stretching dynamic vamp, and the asymmetric lacing is described as reducing pressure.

vs its sibling | 13g lighter than the Rocket X 3, JPY 7,700 more

HOKA has 2 other shoes with carbon plates: the race shoe Rocket X 3 and the Mach X 3, a plated shoe for both training and racing.

ModelWeightDropPriceWho should pick which
Cielo X1 3.0213g7mmJPY 38,500One shoe for race day only. Pay for lightness
Rocket X 3226g7mmJPY 30,800Want to confirm the stack (41/34mm) in numbers
Mach X 3288g5mmJPY 25,300Want to use a plated shoe in training too
The weights for the Cielo X1 3.0 and Rocket X 3 are the announcement's 28cm figures. The Mach X 3 numbers are the Japan official ones I read in our article on 12 HOKA shoes. The plate is carbon in the Cielo and Rocket, and a Pebax resin in the Mach X 3.

The like-for-like 28cm comparison is the Rocket X 3. The weight gap is 13g (226 − 213) and the price gap is JPY 7,700 (38,500 − 30,800). Each gram saved costs about JPY 592 (7,700 ÷ 13).

The drop is 7mm for both, and the wording of the technology sections for plate and foam is almost the same. The difference is the sole: the Rocket X 3 has "high-grip rubber," the Cielo X1 3.0 has molded polyurethane. The gap between the two is whether the rubber was kept or replaced.

  • Chasing a record only. Paying JPY 7,700 for 13g makes sense to me → Cielo X1 3.0
  • Used to rubber soles. Also racing in the rain with the same shoe → Rocket X 3
  • First plated shoe, want to wear it many times before race day → Mach X 3
  • Want one shoe for both training and racing → don't pick the Cielo X1 3.0

What I like

51g lighter in 2 years with no price increase. And it left the plate and foam, the parts that make the ride, as in the original, and changed only the materials of the upper and the sole, the parts that wrap and protect. It cut without shaving the core of the rebound, which is a sound way to cut.

The other is size. Unisex from 23.0cm to 30.0cm. The top race shoe is offered in the same form for people with small feet and with large feet.

There is also a figure of 175g for women's 25cm. The gap from men's 28cm is 38g (213 − 175), which works out to about 12.7g lighter per cm (38 ÷ 3). For 26.5cm, 213g − 12.7g × 1.5 = about 194g is the guide.

Things to watch

Only 2 colors.

The molded polyurethane sole is a build neither the original nor the Rocket X 3 has. The maker claims both grip and durability. For people who have run for years on rubber soles, it is still a new material.

And the price. About JPY 181 per gram is on the high side even among the shoes lined up in our carbon thick-sole spec table article. The Rocket X 3 is about JPY 136 (30,800 ÷ 226), so that is JPY 45 more per gram.

Who is it for?

  • Want one race-day-only shoe. Have a separate training shoe. Couldn't find a top-tier race shoe in a smaller or larger size
  • Have worn the original Cielo X1. Same 7mm drop, and 51g lighter

A shoe for an important race day. If you want one pair for both training and racing, or need wide, there are other ways to choose. If you don't have a training shoe yet, start with the everyday shoe (the Clifton PRO article).

Official prices are the tax-included figures in the announcement. The Rakuten prices are the range of shops on the day I checked, including differences by color and size.

Since few shops carry it, not many shops on Rakuten list it. Before buying, check that "3.0" is in the product name. The original and the 2.0 have almost the same name.

Even if a previous generation is left cheap, I'd pick the 3.0. For a shoe you buy for lightness, there's little reason not to pick the lighter generation.

FAQ

How does the Cielo X1 3.0 fit? Can wide feet wear it?

Sizes are unisex, 23.0–29.0cm plus 30.0cm; there is no 29.5cm and no wide model. The upper is a woven fabric that holds the foot firmly, and the asymmetric lacing reduces pressure. With a 25.0cm foot, I'd start from my usual 25.0cm. If width is a worry, line up the 0.5cm-larger size too, and try them on in the evening with your usual socks.

How does the Cielo X1 3.0 differ from the Rocket X 3?

Weight and sole material. At 28cm the Cielo X1 3.0 is 213g and the Rocket X 3 is 226g; the Cielo's sole is molded polyurethane, the Rocket's is rubber. The drop is 7mm for both, and the price gap is JPY 7,700.

How many grams lighter is the Cielo X1 3.0 than the original?

51g. From the original's 264g down to 213g.

Can the Cielo X1 3.0 be used in certified races?

Yes. The announcement states explicitly that it is a "World Athletics approved shoe." How to read the stack rule is covered in the carbon thick-sole spec table article. Our article lining up HOKA's 3 shoes by this year's changes is the HOKA 2026 new shoes article.
