The HOKA Clifton 11 is a buy as a daily shoe for first-time HOKA buyers and for people who have struggled with width. What decides it: a thick 42mm heel and wide in every color. Released Jul 1, 2026, JPY 19,800, 282g at men's 28cm, 8mm drop.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The Clifton 11 is the shoe for people who have struggled to choose shoes because of width. The maker itself says the sole has not moved from the previous model; what moved is the side that wraps the foot. Wide in every color for men and women, and extra wide in the 2 black colors, opens a door for feet that gave up on thick shoes because the width did not fit.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The announcement's weights are men's 282g (28cm) and women's 236g (24.5cm). The product page says 283g (M10), 1g different
  • vs the Clifton 9: the heel is 10mm thicker and the price JPY 1,100 lower
  • If you own the Clifton 10, the sole is the same. If you have no complaints about the upper and insole, there is no hurry

Clifton 11 official numbers | 282g, 42/34mm, 8mm drop, JPY 19,800

The Clifton 11 is a buy for first-time HOKA buyers and for people who have struggled with width. What decides it: a thick 42mm heel for JPY 19,800, and wide in every color.

When a new generation comes out you want to look for "what got better," but the 11 announcement states plainly that the "sole is the same as before."

First, the numbers from the announcement HOKA's Japan arm (Deckers Japan) put out on Jul 1, 2026.

Release date, price, weight, drop, sizes and widths are the announcement's numbers (weight is per shoe). The stack is not in the announcement; it is the Japan official product page number I read on Oct 13, 2026 for our article on 12 HOKA shoes. The product page weight is 283g (M10), 1g different from the announcement. The price matched the product page.

It is sold at "the HOKA official site, HOKA directly operated stores and HOKA retailers." The sibling Clifton PRO and the race shoe Cielo X1 3.0 are available only at "some" stores, but the Clifton 11 does not carry that word.

HOKA Clifton

Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 17,325 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 22,000 depending on the shop. Prices change daily. vs the Clifton 10 | only the "wrapping side" changed

Here is the announcement's wording. For the sole unit, it "follows the bottom unit that earned great trust in the previous model." What is new is 2 things: an upper in an advanced engineered mesh, and an insole (sock liner) made softer.

Because the sole carries over from the 10, the differences between the 10 and 11 are limited to the side that wraps the foot. The side that meets the ground is the same.

So is the Clifton the same shoe for years? Placed next to the 8 and 9, whose announcements survive, the answer is the opposite.

Weight (men's)250g (27cm)248g (27cm)282g (28cm)
The 8 and 9 numbers are the men's figures in the announcements of the time; the 11's stack is the Japan official product page number. Per mm of heel is price ÷ heel stack (17,600 ÷ 29 = JPY 606.9, 20,900 ÷ 32 = JPY 653.1, 19,800 ÷ 42 = JPY 471.4). The weights were taken at sizes 1cm apart, so the 34g gap cannot be called the shoe's difference as is.

The heel became 13mm thicker from the 8 to the 11 (42 − 29); even from the 9 it is 10mm (42 − 32). And the price is JPY 1,100 lower than the 9 (20,900 − 19,800).

Per mm of heel, the gap is clear. The 9 is about JPY 653 and the 11 about JPY 471. The same 1mm of thickness costs nearly 3 tenths less (471 ÷ 653 = 0.72).

What the drop going from 5mm to 8mm means

A bigger change than thickness is the drop. The 8 and 9 are 5mm, the 11 is 8mm. It became a shoe with a heel 8mm higher than before.

8mm is a common number in other makers' daily shoes. Moving from another brand to a 5mm shoe tends to make the heel feel low; at 8mm that step shrinks. The 11, which "follows" the sole, also carries this 8mm over from the 10.

The 11's technology section also has a line, "Active Foot Frame, with a rear-foot focus." It is a part that supports the heel area to give a "natural sense of stability" on landing. The mechanism that holds up the thick 42mm sole is placed toward the heel.

Clifton PRO296g8mmJPY 22,000Keep the Clifton's height, lean toward moving forward
Bondi 9297g5mmJPY 24,200Softer, for slow days
Rincon 5276g8mmJPY 16,500Same 8mm, want to keep the price down
The Clifton 11 and PRO weights are the announcement's men's 28cm. The Bondi 9 and Rincon 5 are Japan official numbers I read in our article on 12 HOKA shoes.

The one to agonize over is the PRO. Stack and drop are both the same, 42/34mm and 8mm; what differs is the foam. The 11 is molded EVA and the PRO is SCF foam, a gap of 14g and JPY 2,200 (296 − 282, 22,000 − 19,800).

  • Have not settled how fast you run. Also use it for walking → Clifton 11
  • Need extra wide → Clifton 11 (extra wide comes in 2 colors for both men's and women's)
  • Have worn many Cliftons and want to try a different sole next → Clifton PRO
  • Want the "softest HOKA" → not the Clifton. The Bondi 9

What I like

Its ways of fitting your width stand out among this year's 3 new HOKA shoes. In the announcement, all 10 men's colors come in wide, and BLACK / BLACK and BLACK / WHITE even go to extra wide. Women's too: all 11 colors in wide, extra wide in the same 2 black-based colors.

In the Clifton 9 men's, wide came in 4 of 10 colors. The 11 has wide in 10 of 10, and the old complaint that choosing wide left only black or white is gone.

Women's sizes too: from the 9's 22.0–25.0cm to the 11's 22.0–26.5cm, widened by 1.5cm at the top (26.5 − 25.0). Women with big feet no longer have to choose from men's.

And not touching the sole. It is a decision not to change a well-regarded sole just to raise the number in the name. People who liked the 10's ride can buy the same sole with a new upper.

The technology section also has small touches for people who run at night: reflectors that return light in the dark, and a double lace lock that fastens the laces in 2 places. Nothing flashy, but the things a daily shoe needs are all there.

Things to watch

282g is not a light shoe. HOKA's Mach 7 is 237g, 45g lighter (282 − 237; the Mach's weight reference size is not listed). If you are looking for a fast-day shoe, the roles differ.

For owners of the Clifton 10, the sole is no different. What changed is the fit of the upper and the softness of the insole. If you have no complaints there, wait until the sole of your current shoes wears down.

Anyone moving from the 8 or 9 gets a drop 3mm bigger (8 − 5) and a heel more than 10mm higher. If you buy it thinking it is a continuation of the same name, it will feel like a different shoe, so stand in them in a shop before deciding.

Who is it for?

  • First HOKA. Moving from another maker's shoe with about an 8mm drop
  • Wide feet. Want to choose a color even in wide. Need extra wide
  • Replacing a Clifton 9 or earlier. The heel is 10mm thicker and the price is lower

If you choose by lightness or a plate, there are other ways to choose. If your Clifton 10 is still new and you have no complaints, you have time to wear it out first.

Price and where to buy

ModelOfficial priceRakuten price range
Clifton 11JPY 19,800JPY 17,325–22,000
Clifton PROJPY 22,000JPY 19,800–22,000
Official prices are the tax-included figures in the announcement. Rakuten prices are the shop range on the day I checked and may include other colors, widths and generations.

If the previous generation is left cheap, the Clifton 10 is a reasonable choice. The sole is the same, and the difference is only the upper fabric and insole. Decide on whether the price gap is worth those 2 things.

Conversely, anyone who needs wide or extra wide should take the 11. Discontinued stock often does not remain with sizes and widths intact, so if your width is not in the 10, go straight to the 11.

When buying, look at the number in the product name and the "WIDE" or "X-WIDE" label. Even in the same color name, each width is sold as a separate product.

FAQ

How does the Clifton 11 fit? Which colors come in wide?

You keep your usual length and go up in width. Announcement sizes: men's 25.0–29.0cm and 30cm, women's 22.0–26.5cm. Wide covers all 10 men's and all 11 women's colors; extra wide comes in 2 colors for both, BLACK / BLACK and BLACK / WHITE.

How does the Clifton 11 differ from the 10?

The sole is the same. What changed is the engineered mesh upper and a softer insole. If the 10 is cheaper and your size and width are in stock, the 10 is enough.

Is there a waterproof Clifton 11 for rainy days?

Yes. When I read the official Japan lineup for our article on 12 HOKA shoes, a Clifton 11 with GTX in the name was listed. Weight and price differ from the standard one, so this article's table numbers do not apply. The 3 new HOKA shoes this year are lined up in the 2026 new shoes article.
