The Mount to Coast M1 is a trail shoe built for 100-mile-class ultras and rough ground. It went on sale on October 9, 2026, for JPY 33,550. It weighs 280g (men's US 9), with a 38mm heel and 34mm forefoot stack and a 4mm drop. Not a daily trainer. A shoe for long race days.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The M1 is a shoe you choose by whether your soles still have something left late in a 100-miler. The midsole is 38/34mm of JETCELL. The foam is thick, and a wide base and high sidewalls hold the foot. And it is kept to 280g. I run about 500 km a month and judge weight on long distances by division. So for people running ultras, this 1 shoe goes first on my list.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Released Oct 9, 2026 · JPY 33,550 · 280g (men's US 9)
  • 38/34mm stack, 4mm drop. A thick ultra shoe
  • 35g lighter than the Zegama Trail, and JPY 6,490 more

Is the M1 a buy? A shoe that keeps your soles alive on ultra days

The Mount to Coast M1 is a buy for people running 100-mile-class ultras. 280g with a 38/34mm stack. It tackles the reason soles ache over long distances with thickness and a wide base.

The deciding point is the foam. JETCELL is the brand's own foam, made with supercritical foaming. The maker says its structural strength is twice that of ordinary PEBA foam.

This article lines the numbers up against the Zegama Trail and others. What kind of running it suits. That is what I read. The verdict came first.

From Stride's announcement of Oct 7, 2026 (re-read Oct 26, 2026). Weight is one men's US 9 shoe. It comes in 2 colors, OATMEAL and MOSS.

Divide the price by weight and it comes to about JPY 120 per 1g (33,550 ÷ 280). In an ultra shoe, 1g of weight adds up to the weight of your foot on each of the late 1 steps. 1g matters.

How does it differ from the Zegama Trail and Ultrafly Trail?

As shown on each maker's Japan official pages (Oct 26). The size behind each weight differs by shoe (US 9 for the M1, 27cm for the Nike shoes). Per 1g is price ÷ weight, my own calculation.

The shoe with the same 4mm drop as the M1 is the Zegama Trail. The M1 is 35g lighter (315 − 280) and JPY 6,490 more (33,550 − 27,060). You pay JPY 6,490 for the lightness.

The Ultrafly Trail has a big 8.5mm drop and is a shoe for races where you chase a time. Fast. The M1 is the opposite, a thick shoe for running on and on. Different goals.

What the Numbers Say About Running Style and Pace

The 4mm drop and 38/34mm stack read as a build for landing across the whole foot and running for hours, because the difference between heel and forefoot height is small. Even if you land on your heel, 4mm should feel natural.

As for the level of runner, the maker writes "ultras of 100 miles and up." 100 miles is about 161km (100 × 1.609). Long. It is a shoe for long-cutoff races where the goal is not speed but keeping your feet alive to the end.

The wide base and high sidewalls aim to stop your foot wobbling on rough ground. Stable. On short runs on pavement, this thickness is wasted.

What I like

What I like is that a thick shoe stays at 280g. And with Vibram Megagrip over the whole outsole, it is built not to slip on wet rock or dirt. TUNEDFIT lets you adjust the forefoot and midfoot laces separately, so even after hours of running when your feet have swollen, you can fix the tightness section by section. A true ultra touch. The toe is reinforced, protecting it from stones and roots late in the race. Reassuring.

Things to watch

This part is so-so. JPY 33,550 is on the high side for trail shoes. If you run mountains under 40km as an extension of road running, there is also the ACG Pegasus Trail or the Speedgoat 7.

How does it fit?

The width comes in 1 standard option. There is room around the toes, so it should suit swollen feet. Some people say it feels a little smaller than usual, so with a 25.0cm foot I would try 25.0cm and 25.5cm, 2 sizes. Check with the laces that your toes will not hit on long descents. It matters.

Who is the M1 for?

  • People running trail races of 50km or more, or 100 miles
  • People who want less soreness in the soles on rough ground
  • People who want both lightness and thickness

For your first trail shoes, see trail running shoe picks. For the Nike with the same 4mm drop, see the ACG Zegama Trail review.

Price and where to buy

The price is in the table above. Use it 10 times across 100-mile training and the race and it is about JPY 3,355 per run (33,550 ÷ 10). On Rakuten Ichiba, shops that carry it list it. If you want to settle the size by trying it on, check in a store first.
