On's Cloudboom Volt is a race-day buy for runners whose big days are the 10K and half and who want to run the same shoe in fast workouts. What decides it is 210g and a 39.5mm heel, the same dimensions as the 2024 marathon shoe (the original Strike), brought down to JPY 26,400. Released Feb 19, 2026, and the drop is 5mm on the official Japan site.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
I'd buy the Volt not as the "cheaper racing shoe" but as a 2024 marathon shoe rebuilt so it can double in training. The 39.5mm heel and 210g match the original Cloudboom Strike, and the tech sheet says the structure keeps its power after many kilometers. If you don't want to spend on a shoe that only appears on race day, of On's 3 racing shoes I'd pick this one.
Key points
- The toe-side thickness is 34mm. That's 1.5mm thinner than the original Strike, with the same 39.5mm heel
- The gap from the Strike 2 is 19g and JPY 8,800. About JPY 463 for each gram saved
- The women's is 182g, 28g lighter than the men's. The price is the same
Cloudboom Volt weight and thickness: official figures
The Cloudboom Volt is a buy for runners whose big days are the 10K and half and who also want it for fast workouts. What decides it is that it brings the original Strike's 210g and 39.5mm heel out at a price one step lower.
On describes this structure as one that "keeps its power after many kilometers." The figures are taken from both the official Japan product page and the tech sheet (SS26).

The Volt is a name born in 2026, with no previous generation. So we compare it with the shoe closest in dimensions: the original Cloudboom Strike, released in Jul 2024.
| Item | Original Strike | Volt | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (men's) | 210g | 210g | 0g |
| Heel stack | 39.5mm | 39.5mm | 0mm |
| Toe-side thickness | 35.5mm | 34mm | −1.5mm |
| Euro price at announcement | €280 | €240 | −€40 |
| Japan official price | JPY 30,800 | JPY 26,400 | −JPY 4,400 |
The weight and the heel thickness are the same. What differs is the toe side, where the Volt is 1.5mm thinner (35.5 − 34). The price fell €40, about 14.3% (40 ÷ 280), and the Japan official price gap is also about 14.3% (4,400 ÷ 30,800).
The build has been swapped. The original Strike dropped the top half of the midsole in from outside. The Volt uses the ordinary way: 2 layers of Helion HF with the plate sandwiched. The tech sheet explains that grooves cut through the midsole steady the foot on landing.
This is the most interesting part of the Volt. It delivers the same thickness and weight as the marathon shoe from 2 years ago, in a simpler build, and cuts the price about 14%. It's a shoe where racing dimensions have come down to the price one step lower.
How it differs from the Cloudboom Strike 2 and Max
On has 3 racing shoes under the Cloudboom name. The official split is by distance and goal.
Scroll the table sideways →
| Model | Weight | Drop | Plate | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudboom Strike 2 | 191g | 5mm | With carbon fiber | JPY 35,200 |
| Cloudboom Volt | 210g | 5mm | With carbon fiber | JPY 26,400 |
| Cloudboom Max | 296g | 8mm | With glass fiber | JPY 28,600 |
| Cloudboom Volt PAF (limited) | 220g | 6mm | Carbon | JPY 35,200 |
The gap from the Strike 2 is 19g (210 − 191) and JPY 8,800 (35,200 − 26,400). Saving 1g costs about JPY 463 (8,800 ÷ 19). The sole shape differs too: the Strike 2 is a CloudTec Sphere with grooves rather than holes.
Let's apply 19g to the half marathon. At 1 m per step, 21.0975 km is about 21,098 steps. Per foot that's about 10,549 times (21,098 ÷ 2).
19g × 10,549 times makes about 200kg of difference in the total weight each foot lifts. For the full, double that.
The Max is 86g heavier than the Volt (296 − 210). In return, its "support" entry on the official Japan site is "stability," and its features say "for those aiming at sub-4:30 in the full marathon." The Volt's support entry is "neutral."
- Race day is the 10K and half. Also used in training → Cloudboom Volt
- Chasing a time in the full. Just 1 pair for race day → Cloudboom Strike 2
- Running the full in around 4 and a half hours. Want stability → Cloudboom Max
- You needn't choose the PAF version. It's 10g heavier and priced in the same tier as the Strike 2
If you're considering the Strike 2 for full-marathon race day, our Cloudboom Strike 2 article covers the gap from the original. To see On's new releases together, it's the article on On's 6 new 2026 shoes.
On Cloudboom Strike (check the product name for the generation)
Lowest price on Rakuten is JPY 38,500 (as of 10/13), ranging up to JPY 44,000 depending on the shop. Prices change daily. Shoes are best tried on in the evening, when your feet swell, with your usual socks. Fit varies by brand, so check the return and exchange terms on the shop page before you buy.

First, the rebound parts are the same as the higher tier. Both plates are carbon-fiber-blend, and both foams are Helion HF. Yet per gram the Volt is about JPY 126 (26,400 ÷ 210) and the Strike 2 about JPY 184 (35,200 ÷ 191), roughly 30% cheaper.
Second, its breadth of use. It's billed as "wide-ranging, from 10K speed workouts to the half marathon," and said to be built for the 10K, the half, the marathon and everything between. The explanation points a different way from a race-day-only shoe.
Third, a structure built on the premise of long use. The tech sheet calls it a shoe for high-mileage runners, saying the sturdy structure keeps its power after many kilometers. Of On's racing shoes, this is the only one I've read that carries a sentence selling durability.
Fourth, the outsole rubber. It's billed as "rubber outsole with sure grip and stability even in curves." It reads as having in mind the out-and-back, many-corner 10K of a citizen race.
Things to watch
There are 3 drop figures. The official Japan page says 5mm, the tech sheet 4mm, and subtracting thicknesses gives 5.5mm (39.5 − 34). If you match drop to the millimeter, choose it as a shoe with a 4 to 5.5mm range.
Where it stands in the full differs a little by source. The tech sheet's category is "races up to the marathon." Meanwhile the same tech sheet writes that the rearward-shifted rocker (the upward curve of the sole) is "ideal for distances up to the half."
The official Japan categories are 2: "5 to 10 km" and "half marathon." If the full is race day, the Strike 2 is the one that fits.
Width comes in 1 option. The list on the official Japan product page had no wide page for the Volt. The fit entry is "regular."
The sole thicknesses of 39.5mm and 34mm are On's tech sheet figures.
Who is it for?
- Race day is the 10K or half. You also want to do speed workouts in the same shoe
- Your first racing shoe. You don't want to pay up to the Strike 2's price
- You liked the original Strike's thickness and weight
If you're chasing a time in the full, the Strike 2, 19g lighter, fits better. There is no wide version. For daily training, the Cloudmonster 3, at about JPY 82 per gram, is reasonable.
Comparing for HYROX is a different matter. The lightest gym shoe, the Cloud X Tempo Pro, is 267.4g, and the Volt is about 57g lighter (267.4 − 210). How to read the outsole rubber for sled events is in our article on choosing On shoes for HYROX.
Price and where to buy
| Model | Official price | Rakuten price range |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudboom Volt | JPY 26,400 | JPY 26,400–50,800 |
| Cloudboom Strike 2 / original Strike | JPY 35,200 / JPY 30,800 | JPY 38,500–44,000 |
| Cloudboom Max | JPY 28,600 | JPY 19,999–28,600 |
Buying from the official store, you can return it within 30 days of purchase if unused, and the product page says shipping is free. If you're unsure about size, the official store lets you start over.
Even if the original Strike remains in shops, if it costs more than the Volt there's little reason to pick it, since the weight and heel thickness are the same. Only people attached to the original's drop-in construction need choose it.

How does the Cloudboom Volt fit?
You can choose by your marked size. The "size and fit" entry on the official Japan site reads "Regular. True to size." Men's runs 25.0 to 31.5cm and women's 22.0 to 28.0cm in 0.5cm steps, in 1 width. Read the size chart against whichever of your feet is bigger.
Can the Cloudboom Volt be used for the full marathon?
It can, but for full-marathon race day the Strike 2 comes first. The tech sheet's category is "races up to the marathon," but the distance tags the Japan page gives the Volt are "5 to 10 km" and "half marathon."
If I were buying for full-marathon race day, I'd look at the Strike 2 first. A table of full-marathon racing shoes from other brands is in our max-cushion carbon article for the full marathon.
What's the difference between the Cloudboom Volt and the Strike 2?
The weight differs by 19g and the official price by JPY 8,800. The Volt is 210g and the Strike 2 is 191g, and the Strike 2's sole is a CloudTec Sphere with grooves. For the 10K and half, the Volt; for full-marathon race day, the Strike 2 matches the official split.
How does the women's Cloudboom Volt differ from the men's?
The difference is weight. On the Japan official page it's 182g, 28g lighter than the men's (210 − 182). Price, drop and feature descriptions are the same, and per gram it comes to about JPY 145 (26,400 ÷ 182).
