The On Elite Run Sock High Hyper is a sock worth buying for runners who race in shoes with thin uppers and are bothered by pressure at the toes and heels. What decides it: terry cushioning at the toe and heel, and 42g. It comes with the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 released Jul 30, 2026, and can be bought separately on the Japan official site.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

The Hyper is an Elite that took foot feel over lightness. It is 8g heavier than the existing Elite Run Sock High but has terry cushioning at the toe and heel. It is one pair for people bothered by toe pressure in thin-uppered shoes; if lightness comes first, choose the plain Elite.

Key points

  • It was triggered by the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 of Jul 30, 2026. 1 pair of socks comes with 1 pair of shoes
  • The Japan official weight is 42g. It is 8g heavier than the Elite Run Sock High and about 13% pricier
  • The material is synthetic only (94% polyamide, 5% elastane). No cotton or wool

Is the Elite Run Sock High Hyper a buy? A sock that comes in the race shoe box

The Elite Run Sock High Hyper is a buy for people bothered by pressure at the toes and heels in thin shoes. What decides it: the terry cushioning at the toe and heel.

It is the sock that comes 1 pair per box of the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, and is also sold separately on the Japan official site. If lightness comes first, the existing Elite Run Sock High fits better. A table comparing On's socks together is in the running socks article.

Adding the materials, polyamide (nylon) is 94% (59 + 35). No cotton or wool, synthetic only. With no cotton to soak up and hold sweat, it is a combination that is unlikely to get heavy in the rain or in sweaty races.

What is new? What changed from the Elite Run Sock High

There is no previous generation. The closest is the Elite Run Sock High, a high sock under the same Elite name. Lined up by Japan official numbers.

ItemHigh HyperHigh
Weight42g34g
PriceJPY 4,950JPY 4,400
Polyamide / elastane94% / 5%93% / 6%
Cushion locationToe and heel (terry)Around the Achilles tendon
Compression descriptionNoneYes (compression zone)
As listed on the Japan official site on Oct 14, 2026 (tax included). The High's polyamide is the sum of 2 figures (91 + 2 = 93).

The gap is not small. Weight is up 8g, about 24% heavier (8 ÷ 34 = 0.235). Price is about 13% more ((4,950 − 4,400) ÷ 4,400 = 0.125).

The 8g goes to the toes and heels. Terry (towel fabric) at the toe and heel keeps the load down. The High put cushioning only around the Achilles tendon and tightened with compression.

Built for thin shoes

The Hyper is a sock aimed at a smooth fit that conforms to LightSpray's ultra-thin upper. LightSpray is a one-piece, laceless upper made by a robot spraying yarn.

Because the shoe side has no thickness, the sock takes on part of the job of wrapping the foot. The instep has vertical wave-shaped ribs that help breathability and instep fit.

vs the Elite Run Sock High and Mid

There are 3 to compare.

Elite Run Sock MidMid31gJPY 3,850About JPY 124
Performance Run Sock HighHigh36gJPY 3,300About JPY 92
As listed on the Japan official site on Oct 14, 2026 (tax included). Per gram is price ÷ weight (example: 4,950 ÷ 42 = 117.9).

Surprisingly, per gram the Hyper is the cheapest of the Elite line. The price premium roughly matches the amount of fabric added at the toe and heel. If you pay for lightness, the plain High wins.

Which one for you
  • Thin shoes, want padding at toes and heels → High Hyper
  • Every gram counts, want compression → Elite Run Sock High
  • Ankle-height is enough → Elite Run Sock Mid
  • Buying several pairs for training → Performance Run Sock High

What I like

The 1st is toes and heels. Under the Elite name, this is the one high sock with terry there. The thinner the shoe, the more this difference shows in foot feel.

The 2nd is stuffiness. Pique knit in the leg and vertical ribs in the instep encourage airflow. The material is synthetic only, so it is a combination unlikely to get heavy with sweat.

The 3rd is slip. The sole has arch support (a knit that supports the arch). Late in a race, a sock bunching in the shoe is distracting. This build holds it with the knit.

The 4th is reflectives. Reflective material is used on the cuff. A quiet bonus for people who run mornings and evenings.

Things to watch

The biggest weakness is weight. At 42g it is the heaviest of On's Elite line, a reversed pick for people who choose by lightness alone.

Next, compression. Only the High and Mid have the "compression zone" description. People who want to lock the foot with squeeze are better off with the plain High.

The 3rd is size. There are 5 steps, and in some places, like between 23 and 24, the numbers in parentheses do not continue. People between sizes should look at the official size chart first.

Last, price. It is 1.5 times the Performance Run Sock High (4,950 ÷ 3,300 = 1.5). It is not a sock to rotate daily.

Who is it for?

Good fit
  • Racing in shoes with a thin upper like the LightSpray
  • Toes and heels bother you in the late half or full
  • Want a no-cotton sock for races in sweaty seasons

If you like compression, the plain Elite; for daily jogging, the Performance or Core fits better. If you buy the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, one pair comes with it.

Price and where to buy

There are 2 ways to buy: separately, or the pair that comes with the shoe. The sock's price as a share of the shoe's price is about 11% (4,950 ÷ 44,000 = 0.1125).

How to buyOfficial priceRakuten price range
High Hyper aloneJPY 4,950JPY 4,950
Elite Run Sock HighJPY 4,400JPY 4,400
LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 (1 pair included)JPY 44,000—
Official prices are the Japan official listing of Oct 14, 2026 (tax included). The Japan official site allows returns of unused items within 30 days, with free shipping.

Someone who bought the shoes adds a separate pair when they want to split race and training. It is machine washable but not dryer safe. With a spare, you can start from a dry pair even on consecutive running days.

When buying from Rakuten shops, check that the product name includes "Hyper." The plain Elite Run Sock High appears in the same search.

FAQ

How does the Elite Run Sock High Hyper fit?

Choose by the label size (the Japan official field says "true to size"). The display runs in 5 steps from XS (21–23) to XL (30–31.5), the same lineup as the plain Elite Run Sock High. If you wear the Elite now, the same size fits.

How does the Elite Run Sock High Hyper differ from the Elite Run Sock High?

The Hyper is 8g heavier and about 13% more expensive. Terry cushioning at the toe and heel makes it conform to shoes with thin uppers. The plain one is light, with cushioning around the Achilles tendon and compression that tightens it.

When does the Elite Run Sock High Hyper come out?

Per On's announcement, it is the sock included one pair per shoe with the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, released Jul 30, 2026. It is sold separately on the Japan official site too. It is a different product from the plateless long-distance Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, despite the similar name.
