The On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is a training shoe worth buying for people who want to run long distances and tempo runs in a plateless thick-soled shoe. What decides it: a 39.5mm heel and a light 253g, with 20% more foam than the previous generation. The official site says the plate was "intentionally left out." Released Mar 19, 2026, JPY 27,500.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
The Hyper is a shoe where you buy thickness instead of a plate. The heel is 39.5mm, 0.5mm short of the 40mm race limit On writes. It stacks 2 foams right up to that limit with no plate. For people who want to separate plate-pushed training from unpushed training, I recommend this among On's training shoes.
Key points
- The heel is 2mm thicker than the previous generation. The dollar price is unchanged, $219.99 to $220
- The previous generation remains on the Japan official site at JPY 22,000, a JPY 5,500 gap
- The LightSpray version is 48g lighter, with a heel 5.5mm thicker. About JPY 160 per gram saved
Cloudmonster 3 Hyper weight and stack? The official numbers
The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is a buy for people who want to run long days and fast days without a plate. What decides it: fitting a thick 39.5mm-heel foam into 253g.
It is an upper model with Hyper in the name, yet has no plate. The Cloudmonster 3 below it has a plate, and on On's shelf the plate disappears as the price goes up.
I put the numbers in 1 table. I opened the Japan official product page and On's announcement of Feb 25, 2026.

The sole has 2 stories. The upper layer near the foot is the high-rebound Helion HF. The lower layer on the ground side is the supportive Helion. Combined with that is CloudTec (the holes in the sole), shaped toward rebound.
Sizes run 25.0 to 31.5cm for men's and 22.0 to 28.0cm for women's, both in 0.5cm steps. The colors available on the official Japan site on Oct 13, 2026, were 2 for men's and 3 for women's.

The previous generation is the Cloudmonster Hyper released Apr 4, 2024. Its name carries no "2," but On's announcement calls this shoe the form of generation 2.

Stack grew 2mm at both heel and toe side, about 5.3% at the heel (2 ÷ 37.5). The announcement says the foam was increased 20% and the compound improved. It also says the heel build was reworked to raise comfort and support on long runs.
Weight changes direction depending on which material you compare. Between announcements it is 9g up (274 − 265), about 3.4% (9 ÷ 265). Between Japan official pages it is 12g down (265 − 253).
It is hard to imagine a shoe with 20% more foam getting lighter. When reading the generation gap, I use the announcements' "9g up."
Even so, against 20% more foam, weight rises only 3.4%. The dollar price moved just 1 cent and held, a generation change that added contents without moving the price.
Some things did not change. No plate. The previous generation's tech sheet described this shoe as "a training shoe for athletes, with no carbon."
This announcement too explains that the plateless build keeps legs fresh in high-mileage training. It pulled the plate for the same reason across 2 generations.
vs the Cloudmonster 3 and the LightSpray version
The 3 Cloudmonster shoes split by plate and upper.

| Model | Weight | Heel stack | Plate | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudmonster 3 | 295g | 35mm | Yes (nylon-blended) | JPY 24,200 |
| Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | 253g | 39.5mm | None | JPY 27,500 |
| LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | 205g | 45mm | None | JPY 35,200 |
vs the Cloudmonster 3
The Cloudmonster 3 below has a plate and only Helion foam. The Hyper drops the plate, switches the upper layer to Helion HF, is 42g lighter (295 − 253) and has a heel 4.5mm thicker (39.5 − 35). The price gap is JPY 3,300 (27,500 − 24,200).
Do you want the push of a plate, or the sink and return of thick foam? That is the axis of choice. For daily jogs only, the Cloudmonster 3 covers the role.
vs the LightSpray version
LightSpray is an upper with no seams, made by a robot spraying material. It has no laces and comes with a dedicated sock.
It looks like a color variant, but the sole is a different shoe. The heel is 45mm, 5.5mm thicker than the regular Hyper (45 − 39.5). The announcement itself writes that it "exceeds the 40mm limit usable in races."
It is 48g lighter (253 − 205) and JPY 7,700 more (35,200 − 27,500). That is about JPY 160 per gram saved (7,700 ÷ 48), and the dollar price is exactly 1.5 times (330 ÷ 220). Sizes are unisex, and the Japan official table runs from W22.0 to M31.5.
- Training for fast and long days. Might race in it too → Cloudmonster 3 Hyper
- Mainly daily jogging. Want a plate → Cloudmonster 3
- Content with training only, and willing to pay for lightness → LightSpray version
- If you are always retightening laces for instep height or width, skip the LightSpray version. It has no way to change the fit

The 1st is how the 39.5mm thickness is placed. On's announcement writes the race limit as 40mm. The remainder is 0.5mm (40 − 39.5).
It stacks foam right up to the limit and puts no plate in. The idea of using up thickness with foam, not a plate, shows in the numbers.
The 2nd is that the role is clear. The announcement's title is "long-run training shoe," and the Japan official categories are 2: "long-distance run" and "tempo run." It also says it was made with athletes from On's track team.
The 3rd is that it is light for a thick shoe. The Japan official 253g is 8g lighter than the daily Cloudsurfer 2 (261g) (261 − 253). The upper-layer Helion HF is a foam advertised as "ultralight hyperfoam."
The 4th is the reworked heel. It claims "a reviewed heel structure for comfort even on long runs." A generation that put work into the back of the foot, as a long-distance shoe.
Things to watch
There are 2 weight numbers. The Japan official page says 253g and the announcement 274g, a 21g gap (274 − 253). This article calculates with 253g, so when comparing with other makers' shoes, match the source first.
Price per gram also depends on the number. At 253g it is about JPY 109 (27,500 ÷ 253); at 274g about JPY 100 (27,500 ÷ 274). Either way it is pricier than the Cloudmonster 3's about JPY 82 (24,200 ÷ 295).
Width is one. The Japan official product page list had no wide page for the Hyper. The Cloudmonster 3 has wide (Wide), so people who choose by width will find the lower one easier to fit.
For people who want a plate's push, it is a thin offering. For a training shoe with a plate, On's is the Cloudflow 5 (278g, 8mm drop). The plate is fiberglass-reinforced nylon, and it is 25g heavier than the Hyper (278 − 253).
Colors are few. The 2 men's colors are a quarter of the Cloudmonster 3's 8 men's.
Who is it for?
- A long day or a fast day once or twice a week
- Already have a plated shoe for racing. Want to keep training plateless and separate
- Want a thick shoe but within a thickness you can also race in
For jogging only, the Cloudmonster 3, JPY 3,300 cheaper, fits better. If your previous Hyper soles are still good, you have time to wear them out (the difference is 2mm of stack). There is no wide version. For race day at 10km or the half, the Cloudboom Volt, 43g lighter (253 − 210).
Price and where to buy
| Model | Official price | Rakuten price range |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | JPY 27,500 | JPY 27,500 |
| Cloudmonster Hyper (previous generation) | JPY 22,000 | JPY 27,500 |
| Cloudmonster 3 | JPY 24,200 | JPY 22,000–24,200 |
The previous generation remains on the Japan official site. The gap is JPY 5,500, 20% of the newer price (5,500 ÷ 27,500). The colors I opened on Oct 13, 2026 showed 25.0–28.5cm as buyable.
Choosing the previous generation makes sense if you will not pay for the 2mm of stack and 20% of foam. The drop is the same 6mm, and per gram is about JPY 83 (22,000 ÷ 265), roughly the same tier as the Cloudmonster 3. If my foot size remained, I'd put the previous generation on the list.
Buying from the official site, you can return unused items within 30 days of purchase, and the product page says shipping is free.

Plate and foam. The Hyper has no plate, with Helion HF in the upper layer; the Cloudmonster 3 has a plate and only Helion foam. The Hyper is 42g lighter and its heel is 4.5mm thicker.
Can the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper be used in races?
The heel is 39.5mm, inside the 40mm race limit On writes. The LightSpray version is 45mm, and the announcement itself says it exceeds the limit. Check the entry guide for whether the race has a shoe rule.
Is the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper's weight 253g or 274g?
Both are On's numbers: the Japan official page says 253g and the announcement material (men's US 8.5) says 274g. Women's is 213.6g on the Japan official page and 216g in the announcement; when comparing, just match the source.
