For 5-toe running socks, choosing by the cotton share in the material column avoids hesitation. My full marathon pick is the Tabio Racing Run Pro: 18% cotton, thin, with grip. The standard of the same series is 46% cotton, with a price gap of JPY 220. Even the 3 pairs named merino had a wide spread in wool share: 15%, 48% and 59%.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
Choose socks by which surface of slip you want to stop. There are 3 surfaces where slip happens: between toes, between foot and sock, between sock and shoe. A 5-toe sock stops the 1st and grip stops the 3rd, so the answer changes by scene: 5-toe for long distances, grip for HYROX, where you push the sled.
Key points
- Tabio's Racing Run: standard is 46% cotton, Pro is 18%. Length: standard 8cm, crew 16cm, 2 times
- The wool of the 3 pairs named merino: Tabio 15%, Darn Tough 48%, Nike 59%
- The R×L EVO-FSG and the M-RACING Short JG have JAPAN grip on the sole
5-toe sock material: 46% and 18% cotton from 1 word in the name
For 5-toe running socks, the difference shows in the material column, more than the name. Tabio's "Racing Run five-toe socks" and "Racing Run Pro five-toe socks" are almost the same bag on the shelf. In the official material column, the standard is 46% cotton and the Pro is 18%.
The gap is 28 points (46 − 18). The price gap is JPY 220 (2,420 − 2,200). In running socks, the difference shows in this material column more than in looks or name.
So in this article, I line socks up in a table by the material share on the official page. Then I apply 1 pair each to 4 scenes: full marathon, trail, HYROX and rainy days.
How to choose running socks: the conditions I used and 5 axes
The table holds 12 pairs whose material share and price I compared on Oct 13, 2026, from each maker's Japan official site (the US official site for the 2 companies without a Japan site). The order is not by sales; in each table I put them cheapest first.
There are 5 axes to compare.
- Toe shape: 5-toe / tabi-style (only the big toe is separate) / round (the ordinary shape)
- Thickness: thin / medium / thick. Whether the sole has pile (a looped, towel-like knit)
- Length: ankle showing / above the ankle / crew (to below the shin)
- Material: synthetic (nylon, polyester) / cotton / merino wool (fine wool) / paper thread
- Grip: whether there is printed rubber on the sole or a thread that resists slipping
The "slip" a sock stops is on 3 surfaces
Reading each company's explanation side by side, what the build aims at splits into 3 places.
| Surface that slips | Build that stops it | Official explanation (example) |
|---|---|---|
| Between the toes | 5-toe, tabi-style | Injinji: "wraps each toe, removing skin-on-skin friction" |
| Between foot and sock | 3D knit, arch squeeze, left-right shapes | Tabio: "arch support that lifts only the arch," "3D construction fitted to the foot shape" |
| Between sock and shoe | Grip on the sole | mont-bell: "polyester nanofiber that limits slipping inside the shoe," Tabio: "silicone rubber" |
A 5-toe sock is a build that puts 1 layer of fabric between the toes. Grip stops the area between the outside of the sock and the insole. They aim at different surfaces, so one cannot stand in for the other.
So I decide the scene first. In a long distance, where the same motion repeats tens of thousands of times: between the toes. In the motion of pushing hard from a standstill: between sock and shoe. This matching is the base of the 4 picks that follow.

| Product | Shape, thickness, length | Material (official notation) | Grip | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tabio Racing Run five-toe socks | 5-toe, standard, 8cm length | 46% cotton, 34% polyester, 12% Deocell, 7% nylon, 1% polyurethane | Yes (silicone rubber) | JPY 2,200 |
| Tabio Racing Run tabi-style socks | Tabi-style | 33% nylon, 29% polyester, 23% cotton, 9% Deocell, 6% polyurethane | Yes | JPY 2,200 |
| mont-bell KAMICO Cross Runner 5-Toe Socks | 5-toe, thin (no pile), above the ankle | 37% nylon, 34% polyester, 27% paper, 2% polyurethane | Yes (thread on the outside of the toe and heel) | JPY 2,300 |
| Tabio Racing Run Pro five-toe socks | 5-toe, thin | 40% nylon, 28% polyester, 18% cotton, 8% Deocell, 6% polyurethane | Yes (silicone rubber) | JPY 2,420 |
| Tabio Racing Run five-toe socks All-Weather Dry | 5-toe | 68% polyester, 14% nylon, 9% cotton, 5% polyurethane, 4% Deocell | Yes (silicone rubber) | JPY 2,640 |
Tabio Racing Run five-toe socks (standard). The series baseline, a pair called the "flagship model." It has the most cotton of the 6, at 46%. Cotton absorbs sweat well and is a thread that dries more slowly than synthetics. That is what to watch: it is a pair for everyday training rather than for races where your feet stay wet a long time.
Tabio Racing Run tabi-style socks. A shape where only the big toe is separate, with 23% cotton. At the same price as the standard, the cotton halves (23 ÷ 46). An escape for people who find it a bother to put all 5 toes in, or whose little toe does not settle into a fabric tube. What to watch: only 1 place splits, between the big toe and the second toe.
mont-bell KAMICO Cross Runner 5-Toe Socks. No cotton, with 27% thread made from paper. A thread billed as "pulling away from the skin when you sweat." It is the only 5-toe among these 6 with a weight number. What to watch: it is thin with no pile. It does not suit people who want thickness under the sole.
Tabio Racing Run Pro five-toe socks. Thinner than the standard, with 18% cotton. It bills itself as "about 30% lighter per foot" than the standard, with a double build of nylon on the outside and a deodorizing thread and polyester on the skin side. What to watch: being thin, you cannot rely on the sock for cushioning under the sole.
Tabio All-Weather Dry. A pair using polyester thread with a water-repellent finish, billed for all weather. Cotton is 9%, the lowest of Tabio's 5-toe socks. What to watch: it is handled as WEB-only, and costs JPY 440 more than the standard (2,640 − 2,200).
Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show. Injinji's thin 5-toe, with a length below the ankle. The material is 63% nylon, 35% COOLMAX polyester and 2% Lycra, with no cotton. It starts at $15 on the US official site. Its sibling, the Ultra Run No-Show, is the thicker-cushion side billed as "Injinji's thickest," from $18.
On Tabio's official online store page, a sold-out notice and a cart button appeared at the same time. You end up checking color and size store by store.

If you dislike the feel of fabric between your toes, an ordinary shape is enough. Here the difference shows in material, more than in shape.
| Product | Shape, thickness, length | Material (official notation) | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|
| On Performance Run Sock Mid | Round, mid length | 92% polyamide (nylon), 7% elastane, 1% polyester | JPY 2,530 |
| Nike Running Lightweight No-Show Socks | Round, thin, ankle showing | 50% nylon, 46% polyester, 4% spandex | JPY 2,860 |
| Tabio Racing Run five-toe Merino Crew Socks | 5-toe, crew length | 58% nylon, 15% wool, 13% acrylic, 5% polyester, 5% Deocell, 4% polyurethane | JPY 2,860 |
| Nike Run Wool Running Crew Socks | Round, crew length, thin cushion at heel and toe | 59% wool, 20% nylon, 16% polyester, 5% spandex | JPY 3,190 |
| On Elite Run Sock Mid | Round, mid length | 92% polyamide (nylon), 7% elastane, 1% polyester | JPY 3,850 |
| Darn Tough Run No Show Tab Ultra-Lightweight Cushion | Round, thin with pile on the sole and heel, length about 8.9cm | 48% merino wool, 48% nylon, 4% elastane | $20 |
On Performance Run Sock Mid. A pair of synthetic only, with no cotton or wool, weighing 29g. It bills itself as "excellent in breathability and cushioning." It is the 1 pair that the article on HYROX apparel called a material better suited to sweating scenes than the 2-pack with 54% cotton.
Nike Running Lightweight No-Show. Nylon and polyester are nearly half and half. A build that protects places that rub easily, such as the Achilles tendon and under the laces. What to watch: the length shows the ankle, so on gravel mountain paths a longer pair suits better.
On Elite Run Sock Mid. A race pair billed as an "ultra-lightweight sock" for people who run long distances. The material share is 92%, 7% and 1%, the same as the Performance, and the weight is 2g heavier at 31g (31 − 29). It costs JPY 1,320 more (3,850 − 2,530). The numerical gap is small; the difference is on the knitting side. It is not a sock to buy several pairs of for training.
On also has a new face: the high-length Elite with towel fabric added at the toe and heel. That 1 pair, 42g on the Japan official site, is compared with the plain Elite in the article on the Elite Run Sock High Hyper.
The 3 "merino" pairs have 15%, 48% and 59% wool
Merino wool is a fine wool with moisture absorption and release and warmth, and Tabio uses it in mountain and winter socks. But lining up the 3 pairs with merino or wool in the name, the wool share was completely different.
| Product | Wool share | Largest thread | Toe shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tabio Racing Run five-toe Merino Crew | 15% | 58% nylon | 5-toe |
| Darn Tough Run No Show Tab | 48% | Merino and nylon, same 48% | Round |
| Nike Run Wool Crew | 59% | 59% wool | Round |
Tabio has 15% wool, with nylon at 58% as the lead. It is a double build with wool and a deodorizing thread on the skin side and nylon on the outside. The thinking is to use wool only on the surface touching skin and let nylon take the outside that wears out easily.
Nike is the opposite, with wool at 59%, over half. Darn Tough makes wool and nylon 48% each and adds an "unconditional lifetime guarantee." The choice splits: Nike if you want the feel of wool all over the foot, Tabio if you put 5-toe and grip first.
R×L also has a merino 5-toe, the "M-RACING." It bills itself as about 3.2 times more resistant to wear than its predecessor, using a thread that wraps nylon inside wool. The materials are wool, nylon, polyester and polyurethane.

RecommendedSee it on Rakuten IchibaSee it on Yahoo! Shopping JapanR×L and C3fit: two companies seen by length and build
R×L and C3fit are names that come up often for running socks. Separate from the table compared by share, I line up length and build.
| Product | Shape and length | Material (names only) | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|
| R×L EVO-FSG Short (RNS5007) | 5-toe, 10cm length (M) | Cotton, acrylic, nylon, polyester, polyurethane | JPY 2,420 |
| R×L EVO-FL Long (RNS5008) | 5-toe, 16.5cm length (M) | Cotton, acrylic, nylon, polyester, polyurethane | JPY 2,530 |
| R×L M-RACING Short JG (MWS5003JG) | 5-toe, short | Wool, nylon, polyester, polyurethane | JPY 2,860 |
| C3fit Paper Fiber Arch Support Short Socks | Round, short | Nylon, polyester, paper, polyurethane | JPY 2,970 |
| C3fit Paper Fiber 5-toe Short Socks | 5-toe, short | Polyester, nylon, paper, polyurethane | JPY 3,190 |
R×L's strength is that it writes length in cm. The Long is 6.5cm longer than the Short (16.5 − 10). The EVO series bills itself as about 2.35 times more durable than a thin fabric. Remember that cotton is written first in the material column.
C3fit uses paper thread and bills its wear resistance as "5 times or more that of ordinary sports socks (company comparison)." With the same paper thread, mont-bell gives even the share, 27%, and is JPY 670 cheaper (2,970 − 2,300). For people who choose by numbers, mont-bell has more of the materials in place.
How many cm should running socks be? 8cm and 16cm
When Tabio released a 5-toe crew length, it wrote the length as "from 8cm to 16cm." Against the standard 8cm, exactly 2 times. The price gap is JPY 220, so JPY 27.5 per 1cm (220 ÷ 8).
A longer length closes the gap with long tights and prepares you for summer sunburn and winter cold. mont-bell puts the length above the ankle so that gravel and mud do not get in. Length is a matter of gaps and gravel, not looks.
For road races in short pants, 8 to 10cm is enough. In winter with tights and on roads with gravel, around 16cm. If small stones get into your shoes in the mountains, review the sock length first, and you will need to buy only 1 pair.
The pick for each scene, 1 pair each
From here I apply the story of the 3 surfaces to scenes. The dividing lines are my judgment.
| Scene | Top pick | Deciding factor (official number or notation) | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marathon | Tabio Racing Run Pro five-toe | 5-toe, thin, 18% cotton, with grip | Thin cushioning under the sole |
| Trail, long distance | Tabio Racing Run five-toe Merino Crew | 5-toe, crew length, 15% wool and 58% nylon | Wool share is the lowest of the 3 pairs |
| HYROX | R×L EVO-FSG Short | Grip from the base of the toes to the sole, 10cm length | The material notation starts with cotton |
| Rainy day | Tabio All-Weather Dry | Water-repellent thread, 68% polyester, 9% cotton | WEB-only. JPY 440 more than the standard |
Full marathon: Racing Run Pro
42.195km is a distance where the same landing repeats tens of thousands of times. What to stop is slip between the toes. Among 5-toe socks, choose one with as little as 18% cotton, thin, and with grip too, and it settles on the Pro.
The reason for choosing thin is on the shoe side. Race shoes are built narrow to hug the foot. In the article on running apparel too, I called the Pro a "5-toe sock to match thin race shoes." If you put thin socks into shoes sized with thick socks, your foot moves inside, so test shoes and socks as the same combination.
If you want softness under the sole, the thicker side such as Injinji's Ultra Run suits. If you dislike 5-toe, there is On's Performance Run Sock.
Trail, long distance: Merino Crew
On mountain paths, gravel gets in, feet get wet, and on descents the foot slides forward. Length, thread when wet, and between the toes. The 1 pair that meets the 3 is Tabio's merino crew: 5-toe, crew length, with wool and a deodorizing thread on the skin side. The official site also bills it for trail and winter running.
People who put wool share first choose the 59% Nike. It is a round shape. For mountains in hot seasons, mont-bell's KAMICO with 27% paper thread at 57g is a candidate.
HYROX: R×L EVO-FSG
In HYROX, between running 1km 8 times, you push a sled 50m and pull it 50m. You push the floor hard from a standstill, so your foot tries to slip back inside the shoe. What to stop is between sock and shoe.
R×L's EVO-FSG places grip from the base of the toes to the stomping part and bills "360° grip." The length is 10cm, not too long even for the 8km of running. What to watch: the material share is not disclosed, and cotton is written first. People who want to keep cotton down by the numbers switch to the Racing Run Pro, with grip and 18% cotton.

On rainy days, every sock gets wet. The difference shows after getting wet. Cotton is a thread that holds water, so the less cotton, the less it gets heavy. All-Weather Dry is 9% cotton, the lowest of Tabio's 5-toe socks, and uses thread with a water-repellent finish.
If rainy races come about 1 time a year or less, you need not buy extra. If you have the Pro with 18% cotton or mont-bell's KAMICO with no cotton, the same thinking is enough.

| Product | 1 pair | 3 pairs | Difference from standard |

| On Elite Run Sock Mid | JPY 3,850 | JPY 11,550 | +JPY 4,950 |
The gap between standard and Pro is JPY 660 for 3 pairs. A small amount as the price of cutting cotton by 28 points. Putting together 3 pairs of On's Elite costs JPY 4,950 more than 3 standard pairs, a gap that buys 2 more standard pairs (4,950 ÷ 2,200 = 2.25).
Buying the 4 scene picks, 1 pair each, comes to JPY 10,340 (2,420 + 2,860 + 2,420 + 2,640). You do not need to put 4 pairs together at once. Adding 1 pair at a time, in the order of the races you enter, is the buying method with no waste.
The PUMA x HYROX Everyday Crew Socks with the HYROX name have an official price of JPY 4,180. The gap from my pick, the EVO-FSG, is JPY 1,760 (4,180 − 2,420).
If you send synthetic round-toe socks to training, On's 2 types are where to go.

Switching works for people troubled by slip between the toes or inside the shoe. If your current socks give you no trouble, it is soon enough once you wear them out.
If putting in each toe one by one is a bother, tabi-style or round suits. The same goes for people whose little toe does not fit into the fabric tube.
I did not put high socks with compression up to the calf into this table. They are chosen by the function in their sales pitch, which does not fit this article's method of lining up numbers for material and length.
FAQ
Are 5-toe socks good for marathons?
For long distances, 5-toe. A 5-toe sock stops slip between the toes, and my full marathon pick is the Tabio Racing Run Pro (18% cotton, with grip). For the shoe side, choose with the article on shoes by goal time.
Is cotton or synthetic better for running sock material?
For racing, the one with less cotton. Cotton absorbs sweat well, and it is a thread that dries more slowly than synthetics. Tabio's Pro is 18% cotton, All-Weather Dry is 9%, and both of On's 2 were synthetic only.
What is the difference between 5-toe socks and tabi-style socks?
It is the number of toes the fabric separates. A 5-toe sock has 4 splits; a tabi-style sock has 1, between the big toe and the second toe. In Tabio's Racing Run, the tabi-style is 23% cotton and the standard 5-toe is 46%, at the same price of JPY 2,200. If you hesitate over shape, looking down to the material column makes it easier to decide.
Are thick or thin running socks better?
Match your shoes. Thin for narrow race shoes that hug the foot, medium or thick for roomy training shoes. The standard is to match the thickness of the socks you wore when you bought the shoes. For the shoe-side numbers, the article on running shoes 2026 lines up weight and stack.
Can grip socks also be used for everyday training?
Yes. Tabio's Racing Run, both the standard and the Pro, has silicone rubber grip and is a sock you can use from training to racing. A reason to choose one without grip is if you find it easier to let your foot move a little inside the shoe.
