I run about 500 km a month, my marathon best is under 2:30, and I picked these seriously. This is my conclusion as of Oct 21, 2026. With wide feet, widen the fit before you go up in length. I compared six shoes that come in wide on width steps, weight and official price. No. 1 is the New Balance 1080v15 (three widths, D, 2E and 4E, at 259.6g). No. 2 is the Mizuno WAVE RIDER 30 (the standard width is already 2E equivalent, with a 4E equivalent too). No. 3 is the HOKA Clifton 11, which has a wide in every color.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

If you have wide feet, look at the 1080v15 in 4E first. The reason is that it keeps three width steps (D, 2E, 4E) even with a new foam. When shoes are tight, people tend to go up in length, but then the heel is left loose. A shoe that lets you keep your length and only widen the fit is rare. The men's version is 259.6g, 38.4g lighter than the previous generation. For a wide foot that doesn't want to give up a thick midsole, this is the first shoe I'd try.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The 1080v15 has the most width steps: D, 2E and 4E for men, with the 4E in 25.0–29.0cm
  • The Mizuno WAVE RIDER 30's standard width is already 2E equivalent. The 4E-equivalent Super Wide costs the same
  • The HOKA Clifton 11 has a wide in all 10 men's colors. The Clifton 9 had it in only 4 of 10

With wide feet, widen the fit before you go up in length

You try a shoe on. There's room at the toe, but the side of your little toe is tight. That's when people go up a size. But then your heel lifts and your foot slides around inside the shoe.

The order is the other way around. Keep the length that fits your foot and widen only the width code. For the main 2026 shoes, those options have grown a lot. This article lines up six shoes that come in wide, by width steps, weight and official price.

How I Chose: Best Wide-Fit Running Shoes

The order isn't by sales. We ranked them on three criteria.

CriteriaReason
1. A wider fit is available (the closer it gets to 4E equivalent, and the more steps, the higher it ranks)Feet differ in width. The more steps you get, such as D, 2E and 4E, the closer you can get to your width
2. Colors and sizes remain when you pick the wideA shoe whose wide comes only in black isn't really a choice
3. Weight under 300gWide shoes tend to be heavy. If you wear them every day, lighter ones are easier to stick with

In the "E" system, widths go D → 2E → 4E, getting wider each step. Here, "wide" means the next width up from standard that a maker offers. Where two shoes were close on width, I ranked them on criteria 2 and 3.

No. 1 New Balance 1080v15: A Max-Cushion Shoe in Three Widths

Why it ranks here: it has the most width steps of the six. Men's comes in three: D, 2E and 4E. The 4E goes up to 25.0–29.0cm. Women's also has three: B, D and 2E.

The foam moved from Fresh Foam X to Infinion. The men's version weighs 259.6g, 38.4g lighter than the previous 1080 v14. The drop is 6mm. Keeping the width range intact after changing the foam is what I value most.

Watch out for: the 30.0cm and 31.0cm come only in limited colors and widths. If you have big feet, check the width and size combination first.

No. 2 Mizuno WAVE RIDER 30: Wide Even at the Standard Width

Why it ranks here: the standard width is 2E equivalent, and the even wider 4E-equivalent Super Wide is also available. The Super Wide costs the same as the standard, JPY 18,700. Going wider costs nothing extra.

The drop went from 10mm to 8mm, with the forefoot 6mm thicker and the heel 4mm thicker. It weighs about 265g, close to the No. 1 1080v15. The price is JPY 3,300 lower (22,000 − 18,700).

Watch out for: the Super Wide comes in 25.0–29.0cm. If your shoes are tight and you've been going up in length, try the Super Wide first.

The WAVE RIDER 30 review also covers how the plate sits in the sole.

No. 3 HOKA Clifton 11: A Wide in Every Color

Why it ranks here: the old complaint, "if you pick the wide, only black or white are left," is gone. All 10 men's colors come in wide, and two black colors even have an Extra Wide. The Clifton 9 had a wide in only 4 of 10 colors.

Heel 42mm, forefoot 34mm, drop 8mm. The sole is unchanged from the previous model. What changed is the part that wraps your foot.

Watch out for: at 282g (28cm), it's on the heavy side of the six. It's for people who put color choice ahead of weight.

No. 4 ASICS NOVABLAST 6: Light and Wide, With Added Bounce

Why it ranks here: it stays light at 253g and comes in wide for both men and women. FF TURBO SQUARED, a bouncy foam, goes into the forefoot. The stack is about 41.5mm with an 8mm drop. There's no plate.

Watch out for: standard and wide have separate model numbers. The men's wide comes in 2 colors, so if you have strong color preferences, check colors first.

No. 5 ASICS GT-2000 15: A Stability Shoe for Wide Feet

Why it ranks here: at JPY 16,500, it's the cheapest of the six, and at 252g the lightest. It's a stability shoe for runners whose feet roll inward on landing, and it comes in wide. The sole is about 2mm thicker than the previous generation, and about 20g lighter.

Watch out for: the stack is about 38mm, and it doesn't have the many width steps of No. 1. You choose between wide and standard.

How I think about stability shoes is in the GT-2000 15 review.

No. 6 ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28: Extra Wide, With More Cushioning

Why it ranks here: the men's version comes in Extra Wide, and its stack of about 43.5mm is the thickest of the six. It weighs 281g. ASICS rates its cushioning one step above the NOVABLAST 6, at Maximum. Trimming the outsole rubber made it about 20g lighter than the previous model. Sizes run 24.5–32.0cm, so it suits big feet too.

Watch out for: the men's version has no regular Wide; you choose between Standard and Extra Wide. If you want something in between, No. 4 or No. 5 fits better.

Do weight and price change when you go wider?

I left these out of the ranking, but other shoes come in wide too. Here is how weight and price change when you go wider.

ShoeHow the width changesChange in weightChange in price
On Cloudmonster 3Regular → Wide+5g (300 − 295)Same
PUMA Velocity Nitro 52E equivalent → 3E equivalentListed as the sameSame
Brooks Ghost 18D → 2ESame at 290g (27cm)Same
Nike Pegasus 42Regular → Wide+2gSame
From the makers' announcements and the official Japan product pages. The Pegasus 42 Wide is built about 6.35mm larger around the toes than the Regular.

Going wider barely changes weight or price. These days you rarely have to give anything up for width. For a light trainer, the Velocity Nitro 5 has a wide, and so does Nike's Pegasus 42.

Who is it for?

  • Good fit: people whose little toe or instep feels tight and who have been going up a size, and wide feet that gave up on thick-soled shoes.

If the fit isn't tight for you, picking a standard width gives you more choices. Your two feet also differ, so when you try shoes in a store, check both feet in the evening.

FAQ

How do I choose running shoes for wide feet?

By how many width steps a shoe offers. The more steps you get, such as D, 2E and 4E, the closer you can get to your foot's width. I ranked the New Balance 1080v15, with its three steps, No. 1.

If my shoes feel tight, can I just go up a size?

Widen the fit first. Mizuno and ASICS both sell separate versions in wider fits. Going up in length makes it easier for your heel to slip.

Do wide versions weigh more?

Hardly at all. The On Cloudmonster 3 gains 5g, and the Brooks Ghost 18 stays at 290g. The six pairs here also cost the same as their standard versions.

What is the cheapest wide-fit shoe?

Of the 6 pairs here, it's the ASICS GT-2000 15 at JPY 16,500. Next are the NOVABLAST 6 at JPY 17,600 and the WAVE RIDER 30 at JPY 18,700.
