The Mizuno Wave Rider 30 is a buy for people who want to run daily training with a thick sole and 8mm drop. The sole is 6mm thicker at the front and 4mm at the heel than the previous generation, and the weight stays equal at about 265g (27.0cm per foot). The wave-shaped plate MIZUNO WAVE reaches the toe for the first time in the series. A wide Super Wide also exists.

The Shoe Nerd's top pick

Buy the Wave Rider 30 as the first Rider whose drop fell from 10mm to 8mm. The forefoot is 6mm and the heel 4mm thicker, so the gap shrank by 2mm. On top of that, the weight is equal to the previous generation. It got thicker, the tilt eased, and it did not get heavier. The 30th generation is not a color change but a generation that rebuilt the sole.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The 29's thickness works out by subtraction to 28.5mm at the front and 38.5mm at the heel. The gap is 10mm, matching the 29's "about 10mm"
  • Compared with the 29, cushioning is up about 17% and rebound about 19% (the maker's own comparison)
  • The plate MIZUNO WAVE goes the full length for the first time in the series. It stabilizes the thick forefoot and supports the forward roll

In the 30th generation, the tilt changed

The Wave Rider was long a shoe with a "10mm drop," meaning the heel is 10mm higher than the forefoot. The previous generation 29's release also says about 10mm.

The 30 is 8mm. When choosing a daily shoe, I look at drop before weight. Even with Sub-2.5 legs, that is the same. Whether the tilt matches your race shoe is something I want to decide before a 10g difference. So I read the biggest event of the 30th generation as this 2mm.

Wave Rider 30 vs 29: what changed from the previous generation

The one to compare with is the 29. It was released Aug 22, 2025. I line up the 29 release and the 30 release.

Item2930Difference
Forefoot stack28.5mm (calculated)34.5mm+6mm
Heel stack38.5mm (calculated)42.5mm+4mm
DropAbout 10mm8mm−2mm
Sales target (1 year)110,000 pairs (11 x 10k)130,000 pairs (13 x 10k)+20,000 pairs
Both from Mizuno's press releases. The 29's thickness is my calculation, subtracting the added amount from the 30's numbers (34.5 − 6 = 28.5, 42.5 − 4 = 38.5). The gap is 10mm (38.5 − 28.5), matching the 29 release's "about 10mm." The weight is about 265g (27.0cm per foot), equal to the 29.

Thickness: The forefoot is about 21% and the heel about 10% thicker (6 ÷ 28.5, 4 ÷ 38.5). It added more to the front, so the tilt eased. That is the order, and the opposite direction to a generation change that thickens only the heel to add cushioning.

Weight: Held. After thickening the sole and widening the ground-contact area, it rethought how the rubber is placed and did not add weight. Dividing weight by thickness, the 30 is about 6.2g per 1mm (265 ÷ 42.5), and the 29, if also 265g, about 6.9g (265 ÷ 38.5). At the same weight, it can stack 10% more thickness.

Sole material: 2 layers. Even with the same name, MIZUNO ENERZY NXT, the top is supercritical foaming that dissolves gas into the foam, and the bottom is made the ordinary way. Two sheets that deform differently are stacked to balance softness and ease of shifting weight.

Plate: This is the key. "Wave" is the name of a wave-shaped plate sandwiched between the sole's 2 layers. A part that balances cushioning and stability, with a different role from the race-shoe plates that sell on forward push. In the 30, this plate reaches the full length for the first time in the series. It has 2 roles: stabilizing the thickened forefoot, and supporting the forward rolling of the foot (rocker).

Gains: Compared with the 29, it claims cushioning up about 17% and rebound up about 19% in the maker's own comparison.

Siblings compared: Sky Prime and NEO ZEN 2

All 3 are daily shoes Mizuno released in 2026. All use the ENERZY NXT line.

Mizuno's recommendationDaily trainingFrom recovery runs to everyday runsPeople who value lightness and want to run for fun
All 3 from Mizuno's press releases. Sole thickness (forefoot/heel) is 34.5/42.5mm for the 30 (8mm gap front to back) and 41/47mm for the Sky Prime (47 − 41 is 6mm, my calculation).

Difference from the Sky Prime: It is a thicker shoe. 4.5mm thicker at the heel and 6.5mm at the forefoot (47 − 42.5, 41 − 34.5), and the top layer is ENERZY NXT+, raised for lightness and rebound. It weighs about 295g and costs JPY 24,200. Details are in the Sky Prime review.

Difference from the NEO ZEN 2: The people each recommends differ. The NEO ZEN 2 is for people who want to run without being bound by pace or distance. The Wave Rider 30 is for daily training.

  • Want to decide on the daily pair by trying it on in a store anywhere in the country → Wave Rider 30
  • Want a shoe for slow, long running days with a thicker sole → Sky Prime
  • Want a look you can wear in town too → the WAVE RIDER 30.1/30.2 on the same sole (released Sept 18)

Compared with other makers' daily shoes? 5 pairs under JPY 20,000

ModelWeightDropPrice

Nike Pegasus 42About 287g (27cm)10mmJPY 17,600
Brooks Ghost 18290g (27cm)10mmJPY 19,800
The other makers' 4 pairs are numbers (men's) I read from each Japan official site in this site's reviews.

Lined up with the 3 pairs of the same 8mm, the Rider 30 is 12g heavier and JPY 1,100 more than the Novablast 6. It is JPY 1,100 cheaper than the Clifton 11. It is 22 to 25g lighter than the 10mm-drop Pegasus 42 and Ghost 18 (287 − 265, 290 − 265). Few daily shoes with a thick sole keep to this weight.

What I like

It got thicker, yet the weight did not move. Impressive. 6mm at the front and 4mm at the heel added, and still "equal." What was cut is how the rubber that meets the ground is placed. A design that took back the added amount somewhere else.

The tilt eased. From 10mm to 8mm. All 5 ASICS daily shoes whose numbers this site lined up were 8mm. For people for whom the Rider alone had a larger tilt and was hard to use together with race shoes or other trainers, that wall dropped in the 30th generation.

Sold in stores nationwide, with a choice by width. Standard colors line up at retailers across the country, and the 4E-equivalent Super Wide is the same JPY 18,700. It is a shoe with a target of 130,000 pairs in 1 year, so it is the 1-pair choice that is easy to try on in a store.

Things to watch

  • The heel exceeds 40mm. 42.5mm is 2.5mm over World Athletics' road limit of 40mm. For people who wear it in a race involving certified records, how it is treated is set in the competition rules field of the entry guide. What the rule says is written in the article on carbon shoe numbers.
  • Switching from the 29 changes the tilt. The drop is 2mm smaller.

Who is it for?

  • Good fit: Someone who wants to try on 1 daily training pair at a store nationwide and settle fit and width before deciding.
  • Good fit: Someone with wide feet who wants the 4E-equivalent Super Wide. Men's goes up to 32.0cm.
  • Good fit: Someone who wants to match a thick race shoe and an 8mm drop and run the week's training.

If you are looking for a light race-day shoe, there is the option of Mizuno's HYPERWARP line (article on upcoming new releases).

Price and where to buy

ModelOfficial priceRakuten price range
WAVE RIDER 30JPY 18,700JPY 11,220–19,800
Official prices are Mizuno's official online listing of Oct 18, 2026 (tax included). The Rakuten range is what the stores showed on the day I checked.

What you will hesitate over is the 29. The weight is nearly the same; what differs is sole thickness and tilt. With an 8mm drop and a thick sole, the 30; if you stay at 10mm, the 29. Look at the price gap after that.

In stores, look at the generation number in the product name. "30.1" and "30.2" are separate models that put a town-oriented look on the same sole. For width, product numbers split between Normal and Super Wide (SW).

FAQ

When was the Wave Rider 30 released?

The limited 30th-anniversary color went on sale 16 6, 2026, and the standard colors on Aug 21. The price is JPY 18,700 (tax included), and the Super Wide is the same price.

How do the Wave Rider 30 and 29 differ?

The sole is 6mm thicker at the front and 4mm at the heel, and the drop falls from about 10mm to 8mm. The weight is the same, and the plate now extends to the toe.

How does the Wave Rider 30 fit?

It is a shoe you choose by width. Normal is 2E equivalent in men's 24.5 to 29.0cm plus 30.0, 31.0 and 32.0cm, and Super Wide is 4E equivalent in 25.0 to 29.0cm. If you have been going up in length because the width was tight, the order is to try the Super Wide first.

Is the "Wave" in the Wave Rider 30 a carbon plate?

It is something else. The wave-shaped plate is a part that balances cushioning and stability between the sole's 2 layers. In the 30 it extends the full length, adding a role of supporting forefoot stability and the forward roll of the foot. Mizuno's race shoes are the HYPERWARP line.
