HYROX wall ball weights by division are 4kg, 6kg and 9kg. The target height is 2.70m for women and 3.00m for men, and you throw 100 at the end of the 8 stations. The official ball is 35.5cm in diameter, the same size at every weight. What to check before buying is not the weight but whether you have a place where you can throw to the target height.
The Shoe Nerd's top pick
Before the ball, get a tape measure and tape. The target is 2.70m and 3.00m. This 30cm gap changes the content of practice more than a 2kg gap in ball weight. Put 1 line of tape on an outside wall. Choosing the weight can come after that.
Key points
- Weights are 4kg for the women's Open, 6kg for the men's Open and women's Pro, and 9kg for the men's Pro
- Target height is 2.70m for women and 3.00m for men. The count is 100 in all divisions
- The official ball is 35.5cm in diameter. A throw that does not reach is not counted
Weight and target height by division
Scroll the table sideways →
| Division | Ball weight | Target height | Reps | Total thrown up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women (Open) | 4kg | 2.70m | 100 reps | 400kg |
| Women's Pro | 6kg | 2.70m | 100 reps | 600kg |
| Men's (Open) | 6kg | 3.00m | 100 reps | 600kg |
| Men Pro | 9kg | 3.00m | 100 reps | 900kg |
The count is 100 in every division. What changes by division is the 2 things: weight and target height.
The women's Pro and the men's Open are the same 6kg. The difference is the target height: men's is 30cm higher at 3.00m. Even at the same weight, throwing 30cm higher adds work to each rep.
The biggest problem with wall balls is the target height
The wall ball is a station where you squat, stand up and hit the target with the ball. A throw that does not reach the target is not counted. There is no warning and no time penalty; that 1 rep simply did not happen. You keep throwing until you reach 100.
So practice needs the target height too. 2.70m and 3.00m. To hit a 3.00m target, including the ball's 35.5cm diameter, the ceiling must be higher than that. Few rooms inside a house let you throw to the target height.
- On a tall outside wall, measure with a tape measure and put 1 line of tape
- 2.70m from the floor for women, 3.00m for men
- Buy the ball after you have decided where you can throw up to the line's height
If you only get through the count with no target, in the race some reps will not reach. A rep that does not reach is not counted, so 100 can become 110 or even 120.
Size and price of the official wall ball
| Weight | Category | Official price (US) |
|---|---|---|
| 2kg | For practice | $87 |
| 4kg | For racing (women's Open) | $99 |
| 6kg | For racing (men's Open, women's Pro) | $109 |
| 9kg | For racing (men's Pro) | $121 |
| 12kg | For practice | $142 |
The diameter is the same 35.5cm at every weight. Lined up, a 4kg and a 9kg look the same size.
The price does not rise as much as the weight. From 4kg to 9kg, the weight becomes 2.25 times, but the price goes from $99 to $121, about 1.22 times. Per 1kg, the 4kg is about $25 and the 9kg about $13. The heavier the ball, the better the value.

The basic is to buy the weight of the division you enter, as is. There are 2 situations where people hesitate.
Women entering mixed doubles
Mixed uses the same weight as the men's Open. Women use 6kg too. Only the target height is split, and for women it is 2.70m. If you practice with the women's Open 4kg, the race will be 2kg heavier.
People who want to start with a lighter weight
The official equipment has a 2kg practice ball. But the price differs from the 4kg by only $12. Buying your own division's weight first and starting with fewer reps avoids having to buy again.
Even if it is not official equipment, a wall ball with weight and diameter written can be used for practice. If you choose one close to 35.5cm in diameter, the hand width when catching is the same as the race.

- 4kg: people entering the women's Open. The target is 2.70m
- 6kg: the men's Open, the women's Pro, and women in mixed doubles. The women's target is 2.70m and the men's 3.00m
- 9kg: the men's Pro. People who can get through 100 reps at 6kg to a 3.00m target
If you have not decided on a division, decide first in the article on how to choose a division, then buy, and you avoid buying again. The 2kg and 12kg practice balls are soon enough once you own your division's weight.
100 in the fitness test too
The fitness test that serves as a guide for choosing a division also includes 100 wall balls. The weights are 6kg for men and 4kg for women. It is the last station of the test, in the same order as the race (article on the fitness test).
In doubles and relay
In doubles, 2 people split the 100. How you split is free, and you may swap any number of times. The handoff is by dropping it on the floor or handing it over. If you throw it across, that rep is not counted.
In the relay, the person in charge does all 100 alone. Among the 4, who takes this station is the center of how the team is built (article on how to split doubles).
HYROX gear is summarized in the article on what to bring on race day. Other equipment is in training equipment to get for home, and shoes in the 6 pairs of HYROX shoes.
FAQ
How many reps are wall balls in HYROX?
100 in every division. Only the weight and the target height change by division.
Can I take my shoes off for wall balls?
Yes. The rulebook allows taking shoes off for the wall balls only.
Can I use chalk for wall balls?
No. Using powder chalk in the wall balls is a 2-minute penalty.
Can a medicine ball stand in?
If the diameter is close to 35.5cm, you can use it for practice. The race ball is built with a vinyl surface stitched together. A small medicine ball has a different hand width when catching, so check the diameter when you choose.
